FYI, yes, it is a legitimate DOL "request."  However, the individual who called, Marie Blaylock, is clearly misinformed, confused, or just prone to harrasment.  When I told her we declined to participate, she said she needed an owner to state that we refused the request.  I told her I thought "refused" was strong considering the report was not mandatory by law.  She said it was mandatory, but not required.  I asked "what's the difference?"  She said, some states don't require it.  I asked her which states do, and she said all of them, then started to list specific states.  I asked her which law required it, and she quoted Law 29 Code 1.  Interesting.  I then asked her again, is it required everywhere?  Yes was her answer.  Lie?  Confused?  Or just pressing REALLY hard and hoping I don't call her bluff?

Unless you are in NC, OR, WA, or SC, this is not required.  The FAQ's on the DOL website (referenced in her fax) support this: http://www.bls.gov/respondents/ces/faqs.htm#2

Wanted to send a package to our payroll dept and needed a specific name.  Would not tell me what they were sending or what they were looking for.   Very persistent about payroll person's name.

Threatened to call the Secretary of State for the owner of the company's name.

Got a post card in my in box at work yesterday from US Dept of Labor/Bureau of Labor Stats. Was gone from work so don't know ex at date it came. Claimed a scheduled phone call. Also said leave info with co-worker if not available. Card said they wanted employment and payroll data. 'SCAM' right there. Worse they did not even use my 'given name'  but known nickname of that. Nothing with the government has me by a nickname.
BEWARE!!!

This is a legitimate number for the USDOL. Collecting data on payroll for certain date ranges, number of employees, how many are women. Not a hoax. Ann calls us once a month for data. She sends out a postcard to let you know when she will be calling the next month.

Caller claims to be from the U.S. Dept. of Labor, and the Caller ID shows up as "US GOVT," which all just seems a little too contrived.  We get these calls all the time at our office.  Because we are listed with the California Secretary of State as the "agent for service of process" for the numerous companies we form for clients, they look us up and ask for the name of the person in the company who they should send their forms to.  I generally just decline on the basis of client privacy.  The caller is always polite and friendly, and I haven't quite been able to figure out what they're angle might be if it is a scam.  One of these days I should just have them send one of these packets to me so I can see if it is legit...

She called, then sent a packet with questions.  I mailed the completed questionaire to the address.  She called today (don't remember her name) and said that I was not supposed to send the form back.  I was supposed to answer the questions, then keep it handy until she calls again.  She said she will call back tomorrow.

We think it is suspicious.  She wants to know our gross sales etc.  Says she will be calling every week.  I think the US Department of Labor would do this via a written questionaire, not through a phone call.  We think we may refuse until we have verification that it is, indeed, who they say they are.

I am an ex-employee. The phone number (214) 651-6900 is the business phone number of the Dept. of Labor's (DOL) Bureau of Labor Statistics, located in a federal building in downtown Dallas, TX. It is emphatically NOT a cell phone number, nor a hoax. so I don't know who is posting these ridiculous and false postings. Anyone can easily verify what I said above by simply dialing the phone number. However, as I say, I used to work there, so I know that what I'm saying is true.

Received a call from a woman identifying herself as with the US Department of Labor.  She wanted information about how many employees we had and what our payroll was for a date range.  Told me she was in Dallas.  Googled the number and found out it was from Dallas, but was an unregistered number.  I suspect this is a hoax since the US government number would most likely be registered.  Don't wouldn't plan on giving them information.

Got a call from this number this morning. Gave a name that I don't remember, and said she was with the US Department of Labor. Wanted to know if the saloon across the street from my office was still open as she was looking for the owner. I told her that they had closed down, and she responded that would explain the disconnected number.  DUH!!

What is ironic is that I also got a call from Ford Motor Credit last week asking the same information. Makes me wonder if this USDOL call was real or using a cover to gain info...
