The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:
?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

We also received the similar phone call on 11/09/2012 from 215-809-1477. This is a scam. Prior to that call, about 3 weeks ago we had received similar phone call from another # , 215-809-1454. Both calls were from the same person and had a New Yorker accent. He had left messages. My husband called the number and talked to them. They were threathening him over the phone. While they were on the phone, I called the local police department and told them what was going on. They were going to send the police officer to my residence. My husband told them about that and the person on the other side got really mad and started cursing f*** word in Hindi. So, these people are either Indian or Pakistani, don't know if they are calling from India or local within US. But, do not answer or call back on this numbers.

This happened to my mom about a week ago. The caller is most likely Indian. This caller pronounced her name perfectly. No one has pronounced her name correctly unless they're indian. I hope this helps catching them.

I got a call from (215)809-1454, person identified his self as max an investigating officer, has several charges against me. When I talked to him he threaten me that he will get arrested me if I dont pay the charges. When i asked them to transfer me to state police and get arrested me, he was worrying about my future, so I asked my husband to call the police while I was on the phone then immediately he hung up the phone. And I filed against them, police is in search for them.

This guy...officer Ron Davis called from the State Investigation Dept. First of all no one from outside your state should be calling you. Second, calls as such if true will never generate from a phone call....NEVER. Lastly, don't be afraid to ask what jurisdiction they are calling from and don't be afraid to toy with them and flip it around on them. BTW, this guy that called me is straight out of Nigeria...what an idiot!!!

Way to go man!! I would definitely join Platoon.
I received similar call. Caller identified himself as Jim Parker officer at Crime Investigation dept. Pennsylvania. Caller ID STARNET and # 215-809-1454. He had an accent and he sounds like an Indian from origin. He also cursed in Hindi (Indian language) when we argued with him and told him that what he is doing is illegal. I agree as he had threatening voice when he told me that they have arrest warrant for my husband and three legal charges against him. We reported this to local police dept. and they said we go unannounced if we have arrest warrant! And that's true.
Thanks for posting !

This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you may have filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.
The FTC has indicted one of its ringleaders for criminal fraud:

Yeah this Alan Parrish said I had 3 count of fraud against me and I was asking for his email address and badge number and supervisor he wouldnt give it to me so I hung up. Now he is still calling my cellphone and my job. I already reported both numbers 215-809-1477 and 215-809-1454 to FTC.
He scared me the first time but when I started doing research on it and fought it was a scam I just stop answering the phone but its getting to a point of PISSING ME OFF!!!
Dont fall for it!!!! They just want money. He wanted me to go purchase a Monepak card and put money on it

Rude guy calling threatening
| kickoff 2012-10-12 21:30:08 Unknown |
I got the call and I called back and they actually transferred to some guy name Ron Davis. I asked for the badge number and details wanted him to prove that he is what he says. He was on the phone and then hung up and then no replies on the further call backs... Remember your rights and no one is guilty of anything unless it is proved. Officers and cop are well cultured and talk politely and are never threatening. There is no cop who will ask for your credit card number and/or debt card number. In any administration all payments and billings are handled by completely different department.
You have the right to question the identity of anyone who is calling and ask verifications like badge number and address.

My wife received a call...the same story from the same number. He (Mike Johnson) was acting tough and asked my wife to convey to me that I call back immediately as he was calling from the state investigating department. My wife recognized his Indian accent and asked him if he was an Indian. He responded firmly...NO. The caller ID displays "Starnet" and displays the same number that he wants to be called back...215-809-1454.
This is definitely a prank call!
