There might be one difference. The  Louisiana Union Of Police Associations State Council is in Diamondhead with mail receptacle in Alexandria.  Maybe the one I'm checking out is different from regular LUPA.  However, I also found a website that said the office in Baton Rouge was closed.  The letter I received says it is from LUPA, and that they hired Public Awareness to fund raise for the organization.  Here's the website for the ofc. in Diamondhead:  http://non-profit-organizations.findthebest.c ... s-State-Council.  This site list $ amounts -- who gets what, where it goes, etc.  Hope this helps.

Not true.  The Police Assc. that was in Baton Rouge behind the Gov's Mansion is not the same as the one for which you collect.  Your "Association" has an additional "s" on the end of it, and your headquarters is in Diamondhead, Mississippi.  You use a Donor Mail Receptacle with a Post Office Box in Alexandria, Louisiana to throw people off your trail.  Your company collects approx. 1/2 million per year, and the officers who do benefit only benefit to the tune of approx. $32,000 per year -- total.  The company pays a little over $1000 in taxes per year, does not have tax exempt status, and the owners also make money.  I don't begrudge business owners and telemarketers the money they make; it's tough work.  The problem is the deception that MOST of the money goes to officers in Louisiana for certain services.  Not so.  The VAST MAJORITY of the money goes to the business's owners, and some to the callers.  Not bad for an amateur "detective," huh?  Stop lying.

Ok...I'm married to a member of law enforcement and they basically "take care of their own"; the call I got was not saying they were LUPA but just the Louisiana Police Assn. and not FOP (fraternal order of police) either. We've asked to have our # removed and I discovered that my not listed phone number is accessible via THE CENSUS! Yep, so...if you have registered with "do not call", it doesn't matter especially if you filled out the census and your # is listed on their.

I simple told the gentleman soliciting me during my business hours, that my hubby has nearly 40 yrs in law enforcement and then I asked, "What more do you want from us?" He laughed, said he understood and hung up.

Ok, they have my work number, and I don't even know how they got it.  They call at least once a week.  Do I need to be removed from every single "non profit" that calls?  Because it's literally a different one every time.  Is there any possible way to be removed from the entire list?  Or if I list my office number as a "Do not solicit" number, will that work?

Dear Sharon,
I can't believe you actually used your full name in the post...  You were however one of our best callers.  You use to rake in double on your check than what the other girls did - good job.   I guess your crack/lortab habit caught up with you though and you left.  I hope your doing better.  You were one of those, how'd you put it,  - 'convicts, alcoholics, and drug addicts'?.  You know as well as I do in a high pressure environment whether it's ATT, Cox, whatever - there is going to be somebody there selling/buying dope.  That's how some people cope with their problems because they just don't have the necessary skills to do otherwise.  I hope your receiving the help you need.

This company Public Awareness is a total scam!! When somebody donated the actual association only  gets from 15% to 18%. The owner or company keeps the rest of the money(donation). This is b***s***!! It is a legal scam. They pay $8.00/hour. They also only hire convicts, alcoholics, and drug addicts!! It's a frickin joke.

my hat is off to you young fella..its so sad that everyone has an opinion about things they know nothing of.  if they were so smart they would just check with THE FEDS, they would be more than happy to inform them that Public Awareness is a very LEGIT enterprise.  I myself work there and I would not work for any company that does not do what it says it will do.  I also investigated this company before coming to work here.  Please don't mistaken me for someone w/o education, morals, intellect or looks.  I've had jobs making over $300K a year.  I certainly don't work here for the money, but I get a lot of satisfaction talking to the elderly and people that are financially destitute. Putting smiles on their faces.  Our phone calls are recorded and I'm surprised that I'm still working there because I be talking about everything except pledging.  I get so much enjoyment from it that I sometimes think I should be paying Public Awareness.  Word to the wise....Research things on your own.  Don't listen to other people.  The energy thats being expelled on this computer could be used to do something useful.  I know these calls do bother you guys.  It would bother me to.  I do understand.  Just tell the Representative to put you on the DNC List.   Thanks!!!

Non-profit Organization
I'm working at P.A.I. These days. First of all we are not police. We don't work for them. They hire us to fundraise for specific organizations. There are thousands of legitimate police unions. The FOP is only the biggest. Not the only. The AAST has about 6000 members. It is real. When you call back and get no answer its because that is an outbound PBX. Try calling an inbound line. (18668834276). Yeah. They don't receive every penny donated, that's because these phones have to be paid for. And so do I. Plus the letters and forms and legal red tape. As for the elderly, we just got bitched at today cause we sent supposed to pledge them. They never remember to pay anyway. I enjoy my job, I get to talk to new ppl, hear their stories, births deaths, hard times and good. I'm helping my community and earning an honest living. If you think that's wrong, GET A JOB!

I sent a $15.00 dollar check donation to LUPA, they then charge $150 dollars. I feel like they did it on purpose. They are scamers I say, dont give them a dime. They also never answer their phone. The number that they mailed on the letter is unknown.

They're actually not a fraudulent company.  Everything they do is legal, not to say that makes it right.  You did the right thing by asking to be on the do not call list, I just wish everyone were as clever as you.  As long as people continue giving money, "professional fundraising representatives" will continue to call.  Most people just hang up over and over again, or even become verbally abrasive with the poor sap who reads a page over and over again 700 times a day for practically nothing. The real problem here is not the company, but all the morons who keep giving their money away to police unions/troopers associations/etc.  If someone wants to do good all they have to do is be good to those they actually interact with.  Let all those ego-tripping good ol' boys help each other.  Law enforcement is a bad joke in this state.  Funny, if you happen to agree to a pledge and then fail to send it back they're more than happy to leave messages :)

What the heck do these guys need money from us? The s****y state steals 1/2 of everything we make by the time you pay property taxes and income taxes. The State Police get a retirement and medical benefits and a paycheck for doing the job they are paid to do. They have benefits for life after they retire. I meanwhile have to pay 1000 a month for  medical insurance and have no money for retirement.

Nothing against the Police but why the heck don't they use all the tax money that the state steals and quit calling me I'm broke.

As for Unions, I wouldn't give them a penny.Go bother the thieving politicians if you want money.
As for public appeal inc, you are just one pf hundreds who call people unsolicited and no one wants to give you 30 seconds, just hang up.

I just got fired from public appeal (also in business as public awareness) after working there for eleven days.  Yeah, eleven days.  They said I wasn't getting enough in pledges and it was a financial decision.  I'm sorry if I don't have the heart to accept a pledge of fifty dollars from an elderly woman on a fixed income and sitting in a wheelchair, but I don't.  The company IS legitimate, and the Louisiana Union of Police Associations IS a real organization.  BUT...I wouldn't give them a penny.  The organization (any one they solicit donations for, not just the la union of police) gets about 17 cents on the dollar in the end.  If this union were serious and not just a front for some sort of shady enterprise, they would do their own fundraising.  This company also employs women and when I left, the women were soliciting for some breast cancer awareness campaign called woman to woman.  It is a sleazy enterprise and I'm not sure what the deal is, but don't give them any money.  If you want to help, donate to a local organization or directly to the state police.  Lastly, if you don't want them to keep calling, just let them finish the speech, decline to give a donation twice and then tell them to remove your number from the list.  THEY HAVE TO REMOVE YOUR NUMBER IF YOU TELL THEM TOO.  Write down the name of the organization and get the name of the person you talked to as well, first and last name.  THEY ARE REQUIRED to give you their legal name when they call.  Any other questions, just put them here and I'll answer them if I can.  I wasn't planning on working there too long, so I'm not too upset I got fired.  Actually, I think it speaks well of my integrity as a person to get fired from that dump.  If you have zero shame or morals, you can be a great "professional fund raiser."

I work for Public Appeal. I'm one of those annoying guys trapped in a cubicle, reading from a soul destroying script, day-in, day-out. My lifelong rejection issues are not soothed by this job, in which I make an average of 600 calls in one seven hour shift. More importantly, I am NOT a policeman. As we say at the beginning of EVERY f****ng call we have to make, "Hi, I'm __________, with Public Appeal, calling on behalf of..." Yeah, your family is right. The Police don't call you for donations. WE DO! If it was a scam, we would ask for your credit card number or your social security number or something. Duh. We handle everything on the Honor system, wherein we mail you a supporter packet, and you mail back a check or money order. And you mail that directly to the charity's headquarters. The cash doesn't ever come to the fundraising office. God, I hate independant "detectives" like yourself who think you're the one who is "gonna break this whole scam wide open"! You got a problem with us calling you and calling you and calling you? Well, first of all, don't just hang up when we start talking. That just makes me slam that button that says "call back". I have to, you see. Who knows who I was talking to? Maybe I'm talking to a child. And since my job is the same crap your job is. I AM being monitored, and I MUST do that, or risk losing my job. Just listen to the thirty second message, say "No." Listen to the reply where we ask for a smaller donation, say "No." Then you can hang up without getting another call.
