This number called my work today, I'm gonna call em when I wake up and I'm sure it's the same scam like a few weeks ago from these middle easterners claiming that I took a loan from them and I have criminal charges pending unless I send them some money.

Justin this is a scam I just received the same exact treatment about being arrested on Friday and he said he could mess my life up in 2 hours. It was funny to me because after that I knew it was a scam trying to get money. This happened to me before and I was young and gave my info out and they took my money.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.>

I'm only 19 and my work receievd a call from a andi Parker asking for me from a lawfirm. When our receptionist tried calling back they wouldn't give us any information. They then later called at about 5 tonight and said I would be arrested on Friday at my work place or my house because of a loan debt. They said I could go to Walmart. As I was freaking out my boyfriend found then and I had a giant relief. My mom got on the phone and demanded for info like a case number and they said that it wasn't processed to my state yet. It was all very contradictory and made no sense. But being so young and knowing I have no pay day loans I was freaking out. Very glad we found this.

Very glad I found this site.  Just got off the phone with these people.  Received a call from a paralegal named, John Smith, stating a loan company has filed a lawsuit against me.  Started firing off words such as fraud, jail time, etc.  Completely shocked I start asking questions and he asks me to hold for the attorney.  Paul Smith gets on the phone, states he's with Phillips & Keith Law.  Could barely understand this guy.  With names like John and Paul Smith, I expected their English to be a bit better than it was.  Certainly not Indian accents.  Pauly starts talking about this lender, American Cash, who I am not familiar with, and that I owe them some money.  He said I defaulted on a loan and they have made several attempts to contact me and resolve with no luck.  I said since your the attorney, you have my case file, on what dates did these people try to contact me, he said he does not have that information but when the police provide me with the "paperworks" it will be detailed there.  He went on saying this Friday police will show up at my home and where I work to serve me "paperworks" regarding the lawsuit.  Then he said let me see if the client and attorney's will be willing to work with you after just explaining to me the client is not willing to work with me, puts me on hold for a few, comes back and says if I pay the loan company $200 they will work with me to settle the balance.  I asked for something in writing on company letterhead outlining all of this and he said he could not provide me with that. He then accused me of being confused, not listening and said I was not cooperating.  Plan to file a complaint, thanks for the link, ATTORNEY.

I filed my client's bankruptcy petition a couple months ago.  He calls me today with this number, so I called.  The FIRST time I called, I said I was a bankruptcy lawyer.  The female responded that I can't help because this is criminal.  I said, "GOOD, criminal law is my favorite field!  Let me speak to your supervisor."  Then they hung up.  So... I called again.  They told me the firm is "Phillips and Keith."  I introduced myself as the attorney for my client, and asked for the state bar number of the attorney in charge.  The caller said there are 300 attorneys.  I replied, "Get me the one who must respond to consumer, ethics, and bar complaints.--The U.S. trustee is demanding that I obtain this information from you, because post-filing contact with debtors is subject tough civil or criminal penalties."  He said all he could give me was the phone number I already had.   MY ADVICE is to have fun with them.--Call them and tie-up their lines.  Ask to speak to the supervisor.  Talk about sports, whether, politics, practice telling jokes...anything but your personal information.  PLEASE TAKE A MINUTE TO FILE A COMPLAINT WITH THE ATTORNEY GENERAL (  http://www.ag.louisiana.gov/article.aspx?articleid=36&catid=15)

Got 2 threatening phone calls.  One said his name was Alan Thomas calling from the State Attorneys Office and I had a law suit filed against me and my SSN.  Wanted to hear from me or my attorney or would send information to my employer and I was in big trouble.  The other one said his name was John Smith (imagine that) and that if I didn't call back well then he wishes me luck.  Think I might report to the State Attorneys Office.  One of the numbers came from Louisiana and the other came from Missouri.  Oh and both numbers are coming from landlines.
