They always say "press 3 to be removed from the calling list". I have done that numerous times and they still call. AND they use different phone numbers to try to throw you off. I have even pressed "1" as if I want more information. When a live person answers I say, "I do not want what you are offering and I am formally requesting that my phone number be taken out of your data base." They always hang up on me. I filed a complaint with the FCC at http://www.fcc.gov/complaints. It takes about 5 minutes to fill out the online form and I figure it's worth my time to let the FCC know that the Do Not Call registry is not all it's cracked up to be as these companies are finding ways to get around it.

Keep getting UNWANTED sales calls from Tacoma area from : 253-382-9901. Suppossed to be about lowering my credit card bills - I don't have a credit card.  Rude when you ask them to remove you and they don't anyway.  Awfull. I will report on the Do Not call list, hopefully if more people do it will get some action.  Going to try and figure out how to Block them on a land line phone.

This are the same low-life scumbags who keep changing their number to give you a free cruise to respond to a survey. In reality, they want your credit information for identity theft. If that were not enough, and you are unlucky enough to deal with them, to sit through a high pressure time share talk and pay outrageous port taxes. DO NOT GIVE THEM ANYTHING, DO NOT PRESS THE NUMBER TO BE REMOVED, IT WILL JUST CONFIRM YOUR NUMBER.

There is no political affiliation to these calls and they clearly know (and fear) the telemarketing act--that is why they are trying to avoid prosecution by changing numbers repeatedly and coming up with their phony survey.

Political Surveys + Free Cruise = Newest Scam
Given the size and battleground-nature of our state, Nevada is probably a ripe territory for this type of telemarketing scheme.

We received a robo-call this evening from Political Opinions of America looking to do a survey which, quite frankly, is almost a weekly occurrence here. But this one had a twist. After completion I would be eligible for a "free Bahama cruise" thanks to a "generous donor."

Cripes, I thought, have political surveys become so hard to get they need to use phony cruise offers to entice completion? Of course, it being one of those Bahama cruises, I knew this was essentially a boat ride with a bunch of special fees rendering it completely useless. But I was curious who was funding the survey, which turned out to be almost identical to legitimate pollsters, and why they thought they needed to offer a gift to complete it (perhaps a campaign donation would be solicited too).

After completion I was turned over to a boiler room, probably in Florida, where the lady robotically ran through her script touting the wonders of their Bahama cruise. I politely hung up and, after doing a quick Google search, found that my borderline faith in real political pollsters had been sustained. Political Opinions of America is just a front for selling the Bahama cruise scam and getting your credit card number.

One interesting point brought up by some on the scam boards was their belief that this company was hiding behind the political survey as a way to get around the Do Not Call list maintained by the FTC. If true, it's extra sleazy.

So remember, if you get a call from Political Opinions of America, just remember they are your run-of-the-mill scummy telemarketers.

Oh, and if you haven't listed your phone numbers on the National Do Not Call Registry, do so. And if you want to file a complaint against outfits like this one, go here.

----------------------------------

Here is the Washington Attorney General Report

Consumer alert: Don?t be carried away by ?the Love Boat scam?

CruiseA member of our staff recently received an unsolicited ?ROBO? call presented as a political poll. But the political poll was a head-fake. Instead, she was ?given the opportunity? for a two-day cruise to the Grand Bahamas. All she had to do was pay a government port tax of just $59 per person.  And when she asked for written information about the cruise, she was told that the company had none to send out, she had to sign up immediately and provide her credit card information to the caller.

coupleHowever, this shipwreck of a scam reached the wrong person: Assistant Attorney General Regina Cullen. Regina works in our Labor and Industries Division and in past years led many of our high profile consumer protection cases. Regina immediately thought the pitch sounded suspiciously like a case our office had against National Travel Services and Robin Leach, stretching back to 1999:

Washington Attorney General Christine Gregoire and six other states filed suit today against two Florida travel companies, their owners, and ?lifestyles of the rich and famous? pitchman  Robin Leach, alleging they mislead unsuspecting consumers into believing they had won or were entitled to the vacation of their dreams.

The suit alleges the defendants used Leach's ?celebrity endorsement? to convince consumers they had won or were entitled to a luxury Florida vacation and cruise to the Bahamas. Consumers soon found they had won nothing except an opportunity to pay as much as $1,000 for a seven-day Florida vacation and a bonus Bahamas' cruise which was actually a one-day ferry ride and a game of ?Las Vegas style? bingo.

Washington consumers received travel certificates featuring Leach's picture and the message: ?Robin Leach says Pack Your Bags!? As a condition of the trip, the certificates failed to disclose that consumers would be required to attend lengthy timeshare presentations.

?A ?free? cruise, which isn?t really free, will send you sailing on a sea of frustration,? said Washington State Attorney General?s Office Consumer Protection Chief Doug Walsh. ?Add the patent illegality of commercial robo-calling and misrepresentations that it?s a political poll, and you know you won?t be joining Gopher or Capt. Stubing on the Love Boat. But you might be sailing on the Titanic Scam-Liner to financial doom.?

Not a bad turn of phrase?especially for an attorney. But I digress.

Why did the cruise line pitch mask itself as a political poll? After all, it?s not as if everyday consumers sit at home waiting, with bated breath, to be interrupted by such questions.

Walsh reminds that political robo-calls are legal, but the same tactics from businesses are not.  That being said, it wasn?t really a political poll. That means it?s still illegal. Remember that I called this scam a shipwreck? Scammers, while sometimes clever, aren?t always the brightest bulbs.

The moral of the story is simple. Don?t respond to commercial robo-calls?period.

You can protect yourself from these kinds of scams by following a few simple rules:

   Always ask for written information.
Never give out credit card numbers or other personal or financial information unless you personally know exactly who you are connected with.
Ask yourself, "Is everything legal here?" Beware if the caller is breaking any law, no matter how trivial it may seem (such as calling before 8:00 a.m. or after 9:00 p.m.). He or she may be breaking other laws as well.
If you are uncomfortable or annoyed by a caller, ask to be put on the "do not call" list. Once you request this, the company can?t call you again.

When these idiots call, don't get mad...get even.

Next time they call I'll say "Que? no hablo ingles!"

When they switch to Spanish, "What?  I'm sorry I can't understand you!"

When they switch back to English "Que? Yo no se puede entender?"

It'd be fun to see how long it takes them to figure out they're just being messed with.  Another good one is to ask them if they can hold on for a second and just set the phone down.  Or hang up on them just before you "give them" personal info.  When they call back "Oh I'm sorry, I don't know what hap-*click*".

I once told a telemarketer "I'm sorry, she died last night."  and I broke down in fake sobs. Poor woman couldn't get off the phone fast enough, LOL!!!

Anyway...don't get mad.  Just get even.

I wonder if the "Do Not Call List" employees are selling their list. It's extremely ignorant of companies to call any of us on the list. Why would we want to do business with people who don't respect our wishes? It's like when I posted a "No Soliciting" sign on my door and was annoyed by sales people and phoney charities. When I asked if they noticed the "No Soliciting," sign, I got the answer, "Oh, I didn't think that meant me." I told them I was sorry for their inability to read and suggested they needed to work on that.
Phone solicitors are no different. They rudely call someone who made it very clear they don't want to be bothered.
Maybe we should annoy them back:
Ask for their home phone number, so you can call you back at your convenience.
Tell them you're practicing for America's Got Talent and sing loud, screechy and off-key.
Tell them you need money and ask if they'd buy your used underwear; it's just 15 years old and only slightly stained.
Tell them you have to get out of Dodge; the cops are after - then hang up.
Tell them the phone call is being monitored for quality control, then hang up.
Tell them you'll have to put them on hold, but enjoy the music while they wait. Then turn on your vacuum cleaner and lay the phone on it.
Bet you'll think of lots more and probably much better ways to annoy them. Let's do it! Let's get 'em!

Same telephone clowns just called me but I don't answer. I just forward the number to the Do Not Call complaint number for all the good it does. But.... I'm building the number of complaints I make so as to re-enforce my complaint of useless government people wasting government funds doing nothing. Once again the answer is a little simpler than the government and the carriers want you to know. Make the carriers responsible for their phone lines being used for criminal activity. Once they have received a couple calls from Do Not Call complaints, burn the caller or pay damages to those called. The technology is there but there is no desire on the carrier or governments part to fix the problem. I also let Do Not Call useless folks know that if they punch the number in their computer they will see the same info that you and I are looking at here on 800notes.com.

I got the 2nd. call from them this month. I expect there will be more. The FTC will take complaints but needs lots of complaints to take action. I normally complain on-line (https://complaints.donotcall.gov/complaint/complaintcheck.aspx?panel=2) but this time I called the FTC "live" number, 1-877-382-4357. I suggest as many people as possible file complaints (use the "live" number; tying up their lines may get their attention). Also complain to the Washington State's Attorney General's Office. Call and request the form be mailed to you (again it costs the state of Washington), the on-line form is not the same and forces you to give some info you may not want to give. By the way, the DNC is supposed to be enforced by local law enforcement so lots of complaints to the State's Attorney General Office (in this case WA) should also get their attention. If I continue to get calls from Washington State, I intend to send complaints to the local media when the State's Attorney General is up for re-election documenting his failure to enforce the DNC list in Washington.
