This could be a persistent wrong number. (It happens.)
This could be a friend who doesn't know how to use the answering machine.

I'm sorry I don't have any details on who this is or why they called twice. Answering machine got the calls both times, and they left no message.

Which suggests it's a telemarketer . . . two calls; no message. Typical. Frustrating. Stupid, really. Now, if they call again and I pick up, it doesn't matter what they're selling. They've had two chances. If I talk to them, why would I want to do business with someone so inconsiderate?

Answering machine detection usually depends upon the calling equipment "listening" for the phone to be answered..........with only a brief, short sound. If there's more, "HI, thisisblahblahblah leave a blah and so forth," like most people have on their machines, then it responds appropriately -- according to the caller's programming. Leaves a message, hangs up, whatever.

If there's a short sound, then the equipment connects an agent or begins the message . . .  or whatever it's programmed to do "if a live person answers." Long time ago, I read on the Internet an account of someone's dog barking and triggering the machine on the other end. Different callers work different ways, but if you simply pick up the phone and are silent.....it's usually silent on the other end. Until your dog barks, you clap your hands, or you say something like "Hello." Then, there's some response. Machine message. Live agent; whatever.

SO: My answering message is, basically, "Hi, leave a message." I've not been able to tell that the "listening" equipment distinguishes between a single word or a brief phrase. As a result, I often hear people come on the line, start to talk, then hang up.

These calls -- nothing.

So, I'll make it a point to answer when I can, find out who's bothering us, and come post it. Meantime, if you KNOW WHO IT IS, please share. That they called you? Doesn't really help anything, unless you're reporting it to FCC, FTC, police department (If it's a local call...in some states, it can be telephone harassment.), and state Attorney General.

But, if it'll make you feel better, go ahead and rant. Don't bother to tell them, "Don't call me!" because they don't read this. And, don't bother to declare them scam artists, would-be burglars, or whatever unless you have some actual facts on which you can base your claim.
