Phillips Cohen & Associates are a debt collection agency, they r mother fu@@rs they use the words estate....asking who is handling the estate etc .... beware they r a shady debt collection company that will sell there own mothers for a buck.... aaron jackson my a**, kiss my a** you piece of shi@.

When someone dies, their debts - like credit cards - don't get paid. Depending on how large the balance is, the credit card company either handles the collection in-house, or transfers it to a collection agency that specializes in recovering from estates.

Phillips & Cohen is one of these estate collection agencies. If you are getting a phone call from them, they have either called you by mistake, or more likely, someone filed a list of heirs with the probate court handling a decedent's estate, and your name/info was on that list. When the administrator of the estate doesn't pay the bill as required, the collection agency does the next best thing and hounds the heirs, trying to get the money. Remember, a collection agency only gets paid if they recover money; they don't get paid for trying.

My suggestion is that you call the toll free number above and go through the prompts to get to a live person. Tell them of the mistake, or, if you know the name of the deceased person they are calling about, tell them this: you are not the administrator to the estate; because you are not the administrator, you have no contractual relationship with the company (credit card, etc.) claiming the debt; therefore, there is no legal justification for them to ask you for info or for payment; if they persist, you are turning the case over to the local district attorney/county prosecutor's office. In most states, there are laws limiting what a collection agency can do. If you have no legal obligation on the debt, it is unlawful for them to contact you after being told that.

I continually get calls for "the person handling the estate of" someone I've never heard of, we just have the same last name.   The calls are from an automated system.   I have pushed the button saying I don't know this person.   Still get calls.   I have spoken to them twice trying to get off their phone list.   Still get calls.   This is HARRASSMENT and is ILLEGAL.    Today the woman told me the name of the company is Phillips and Company.   Googled it.   It is a UK company.   Something is very wrong here.

Received two calls from this number asking about a deceased person who I have no knowledge of.

i have received 4 calls regarding a deceased individual, unrelated to me, at a private number (not made public)  ..the first time i told them i had no relationship with the individual and subsequently have received 3 additional calls..the caller identified himself as aaronjackson of phillips and co.

I have received six calls from this number. They were inquiring information about my deceased step-mother. I told I haven't spoke to her in fifteen years and knew no information. They said they would take my name off the list and yet they continue to call. When I question the reasoning of the call they are extremely vague with there answers...Definitely a shady corporation. Beware.

It is Phillip and Cohen.   They have to do with collections, bankrupcty and collecting/opening probate.   Have no clue how they knew my mom passed.   She has no debt.

Same A**hole called me and wanted to know who was handling  my brother in laws estate.  He kept pressing me for names of my attorney, wife, and person handling the estate.  I asked him how he got my number and he said from my attorney.. LIAR.  I then asked him what my attorneys name was and he couldn't answer.  Someone should shut this person/company down!

I have been receiving calls from this number recently.  My stepfather died, and this a**hole is calling me on my cell and at work.  The man was my STEPFATHER!!!  I just keep telling the jerk that I don't know who he's talking about, and have asked him repeatedly to quit calling.  Little does he know, I work for an attorney, and if he keeps calling, I will certainly pursue it.

Whoever is calling from this number called my sister and brother looking for me. Said they wanted to know if they were handling my ex-husbands affairs( been divorced from him since 1993). The number came up on my phone, I didn't answer it but did try to call it back. It says "all circurts are busy"

I just got a call and voice mail at 9pm last night while I was out, and they were asking about my mother's estate (who was handling, etc.). Except that my mother is in a nursing home and definitely alive. They said they were expressing condolences for my loss. What creeps!

Dude called asking about estate of deceased sister-in-law. Told him the person was not here. Asked when she died. I told him. Said he would call back.

They called to find out who was handling my mother's estate, and I made the mistake of giving them my brother's phone number, and he says the man that called was very nasty.

I got a call from this number 5-12-2009 about someone who died and wanted to know if I was handling the estate.  The caller identified himself as Jason Roads.  Whoever died, i did not know.

Plenty...but more needs to be done. You need to do your part by informing them that the party they are after does not reside at your number and if they continue to call, you have the right to file a lawsuit against them for TCPA violations (Do Not Call).

West Virginia Sues New Jersey Bill Collector

Congress may have severely toughed bankruptcy laws, to the detriment of consumers, but state officials in West Virginia say bill collectors can't threaten and harass debtors. State Attorney General Darrell McGraw is taking an out of state collection agency to court, saying it may have violated West Virginia law.

McGraw has filed suit to compel Phillips & Cohen Associates, Ltd., a New Jersey collection agency, to comply with the Attorney General's investigative subpoena.

The Attorney General began investigating Phillips & Cohen's' debt collection practices after receiving complaints from consumers that it was threatening consumers with jail, discussing the alleged debts with persons other than the consumers, and attempting to collect money for debts that have already been paid.

Phillips & Cohen is not registered to do business in West Virginia and has not posted a bond, a requirement for all collection agencies doing business in the state.

"Rogue collection agencies will not be allowed to harass and threaten West Virginia consumers," McGraw said. "Any consumers who receive repeated telephone calls from debt collectors or have debt collectors threaten them with jail or criminal prosecution should contact my Consumer Protection Division".

I have received serverals calls from "Edith" about a Phyllis Leedy, recently deceased and would I pay the debt???? so what is everyone doing about this scam?

These people are heading to Hell. They are the worst of the scum out there, preying on families of the deceased. I am going to forward info. to the Attorney Generals office of Mo. & see what they can do. Do not take their calls or return them; it's a scam!!!

Caller left a detailed message for a relative to call regarding a family member that is deceased. Didn't answer call because didn't know anyone in Newark, DE and unfamiliar with Phillips and Company. So, I looked up the company name and phone number.  Happy that I did.  This looks like some kind of Scam. WILL BLOCK THEIR NUMBER IMMEDIATELY.

They have called here several times relating the previous resident at this address, who apparently passed away within the last year or so.  They claim they want to discuss the settlement of her estate.  They obviously have listened to our voice mail message, since they started asking for people named on our message.  Clearly a scam.

Definitely a debt collector - message was "in reference to the late Jane Doe" - where Doe is my ex-husband's last name, but he has no relatives, dead or alive, of the name given.  I returned the call and informed the caller that I don't know this person, and she promised to remove my name as a relative. We'll see if that lasts.
