Never send your passport scan by mail and sure never send money before seen the flat.

I followed up on a vacation apartment rental with Ed Wingell in Montreal and it all went well.  If you want to rent from him through the internet, I highly recommend doing so, provided you take steps to ensure that you are dealing with the real person.  Follow up on the contact information given here or in his advert on VRBO.com to verify that your money's going to the right guy, but I found him honest and reliable.  The apartment that he rented was comfortable, clean, well located, and tastefully decorated.  Ed is a nice guy and good to deal with.  When I first hit this report under his name on the internet, my instinct was to give up on the apartment, but I'm very glad I persevered.  He provided a reliable character reference and managed payment through my credit card with no problems.  We had a great vacation in Montreal!

I was eventually contacted by someone who had sent money and she had reported this incident to the police. Apparently he (and maybe others) run scams of all kinds on an international scale and the RCMP and FBI are gettting involved. For anyone checking this site for scams please calls the numbers that are listed in my ad and I authenticate my identity

Can you provide more details about the switch of name?  I have been considering renting a Montreal apartment from Ed Wingell, based on a listing on vrbo.com  The website claims he is a musician in the Montreal Symphony named Edouard Wingell, which is validated by the names in the Symphony listed online.  If this guy isn't legit and is using the Wingell name for fraud, I'd like to let the symphony guy know so he can prosecute.  If he is legitimately a member of the symphony but still fraudulent, it might help others who want to recover their money to know where he works.

This guy is crazy,he uses Daniel Lockwood, asking me to send him money 1190 euros before I visit the appartment. Thank GOD I google him. Let's stop him!!

The funny thing is he said he doesn't have a french bank account where I can send him the money, only western union or MoneyGram. That's why I google him.

Thank goodness for Google!  I found this site after the third email from "Samuel" which was exactly like your letters and I googled "Edward Lockwood" in Texas.  Having grown up in Vancouver I knew that the photos that were posted of the views from the apartment couldn't possibly by 6th Avenue off of Granville!!  The ad was up for one day on Craig's list at $1000 and then reappeared at $2600 two days later.  He seems to have used someone else's ad for his scam!!

I also just saw that ad for the flat in Berlin.  I am sure the pictures he sends are pics that othr people send him, since he requests a picture of the renter in advance. Unfortunately mine wil be out there now too.  But the apt seemd too good and didn't fit the type of apt in the area.  I was already pretty suspicious but searched the email once he replied and I could tell that my name was just copied and pasted into a barely coherent english e-mail that doesnt reflect the way a German would make english mistakes. So glad I googled!  just wish I hadn't sent as many details...beware!

He just tried to make me rent a flat in Maastricht, Netherlands for 300EUR per month. 600EUR security deposit, to be sent to him in Austin Texas. I told him there was no way i'd sign a contract without him using a valid agency in the Netherlands.

People, be careful! Never send your money to strangers. This guy offered me an apartment in Canada for incredibly low price and asked to pay 600 dollars deposit ('as element of trust')saying that he is working in Texas and his 'lawyer' who is forcing him to get this deposit is in Canada. I just notices that he wrote first that he works in Swift Oil and Gas and afterwards in Monterey Oil... I bet he writes lots of emails and is already confused with his lies...
