The DNC does the job its supposed to do.  It however, does not stop the illegal telemarketers, frauds, extortion scammers and criminals in general from calling you!  I certainly do not want the honest ones calling me also.   Might try reading up on how it works and what it actually does before claiming it doesn't work!

Caller ID gave this number and "unknown name". A man enthusiastically said my name, then "of [my town]" - also very enthusiastically, as though he must be an old friend. I asked who was calling but by that time he had hung up. Testing my number to verify my name and location, apparently, for a future scam. Memo to self: don't answer such calls again!

Go back to the company who did the work and tell them they better stop what they did. Turn in to media, DA's, FCC, better business bureau.  make sure your phone company doesnt sell yr number. If fill out surveys that info gets sold.

I have started turning off my answering machine when a call comes in that I either don't recognize or when caller ID indicates "Unknown Caller."  Then I let it ring until they give up and I later check the phone number on line.  I've been getting a lot fewer hang-up calls since I've started doing this.

There is one solution. Get a phone that is password protected, with a message, when your phone rings and is automatically answered your pre-recorded message will state something like, "please enter the passcode to be connected." Of course, only give your passcode to people you know. Even when you fill out paperwork that requires home phone numbers, if the passcode is not listed on the paperwork then it doesn't matter who calls your phone number, they will never be connected without the passcode. I know it is a little work to implement but it may be worth it in the long run because the only time you answer the phone you will know it is someone you gave the passcode.

Another solutions, is try an answering service. Give the answering service a list of names of people that may call you and you know, which this list can be updated periodically. Shop around for monthly pricing and the result could be you will never hear from another unwanted call.

phone no one on the other end or they hang up....I don't get it....My phone will block up to
30 numbers,, maxed out last year...cleared them all on Jan 1...almost back
up to 30 again... Does anyone know the reason for all this STUPID CRAPP????

Just received a call from this number.  The caller ID said "INGLEWOOD CA"... no sound on the line... I said "hello" twice, with a good length pause between to let someone have the opportunity to speak.  Still nothing so I hung up.  WhitePages Reverse Lookup says "AT&T Landline in Los Angeles, CA."

Reading most of these reports makes me wonder what do you expect? Your meek responses leaves you wide-open for more of the same. DO SOMETHING to show them you are NOT falling for their scam. Yet be ready: You can tell them to GO F___ themselves, and they will just keep trying to sell you! I admit it, after over a year of getting an average of 30+ telemarketer calls a month, I am out to attack. The last time this one called -- yesterday -- and asked for me by name, I waited until he began his scam, which included trying to trick me into believing he was calling on behalf of my utility company. When he asked me if I own my property (giving my home address), I said "Go F___ Yourself"; he started to respond, "Oh, well....", and I hung-up. What's different about this one is he immediately called back. I answered with another expletive and hung-up. He immediately called back a THIRD time. This time I answered by saying "Go ahead, this call is being recorded!". He said "This is the power company", and hung-up. I redialed the number, and of course got a recording that it was a disconnected number.

I've used other "reverse-scams" on them, with limited success. When I didn't have anything better to do I would keep them on the line -- that would usually apply to home construction or solar energy low-life: All that operator wants, bottom-line, is to make an appointment for someone to come to your house. The trick is keeping them trying, but continuing to answer them questions without committing. After awhile, you can "shut them down" in a way that shows them you were stringing them along... your choice of how. I tell them outright what I was doing, secretly hoping my number would be dropped. No, I have not had a brick thrown thru my window or tires slashed.

I have done another reverse-scam that I believe works even better. But unfortunately, because I'm convinced the telemarketers read these websites, I'm not going to detail that. Sorry; I'm just saying that you can be inventive, if you think about it. They are after you because you're a property owner.

Bottom line: What a sad situation that our government makes it so difficult to report "Do Not Call" violations. I am now shopping for a new cordless phone that will do the best job at blocking MANY numbers. They routinely change numbers, so I believe a phone must be capable of blocking MANY numbers.

I hope this helps you -- and PLEASE, don't be like so many sheep. FIGHT BACK.

1/10 11:03 PST Was on another call but wouldn't have answered since no ID shown.  Eventually these "people" will get the idea and stop harassing people.  Let them spend their money on mailing and office supplies.  If they are construction or repair, they should identify themselves.  The worst I ever did was have work done on my home and now I get umpteen calls a day trying to solicit additional business.

I was getting calls 6 times a day from a 714 number even after telling them in  Nasty voice do not call here again. Finally after 4 calls on the 31st I called the phone company and told them they had to so something. They put a block on that number, but now they are probably using a different number.
I usually do like one of the complaints stated  just answer and immediately hang up.

This doesn't work either. Now I just turn on my fax machine on my home number. They keep calling. I check my caller ID when I get home and it is the same numbers over and over. I see why people don't have home phones anymore. On the new iPhone update, 7, there is a "block number" choice after getting these calls but they just use a new number from their phone banks. I also understand that these are "internet phones" so they not controlled by phone companies. So how do they get these numbers? Now I am getting more calls with no area code.
