We keep getting recorded calls, and when they announce the person's name that should call them back, they use another recording of another person's gruff voice stating the name.  The caller never tells us who they are, what they are calling about, and why we should respond to their calls.  We found out the calls are coming from a company called Harris & Harris.  It seems unreasonable to comply with their demands, so we are not planning to call them back.

This number has called me on three occasions so far.  It is a recorded message and asks me to deliver a message to my son who has been estranged from us for 20 years. Asked to call back this number.  Did not and will not respond.  It's getting annoying and frustrating.  My husband and I are up in years and don't need this kind of persistent non-relevant calls.

Let me guess, you asked verbally and the calls won't quit. To a ''not me'' case I always recommend putting the agency on notice, just as you would if you were the target and the debt claim was invalid. Send a ''cease-communication'' notice via USPS Certified with return card. For gosh sakes, release the Caps Lock key first.

This is the method promoted by the FTC and many consumer watchdogs, and the only way to set a legal landmine, as such a notice is ignored at their risk of a lawsuit from you. You may already be due some payback if you can prove you've endured abusive or misleading treatment in an effort to collect debt.

Dispute and validate, yes, but choose your advice carefully. I'd just as soon steer people away from a lawyer-run site. This one is a design disaster run by Weisberg and Meyers. There are holes in several of its assertions about FDCPA, and/or critical exceptions to the rules not mentioned. The worst faux pas is a common one, the promotion of several dispute letters which take the "all but the kitchen sink" approach and are roundly ineffective.

In late March I discussed the great value in being simple and direct in those letters. They will likely be read by grade school dropouts, don't forget.

I like to start rookie debtors in distress on the official writ of the FTC. Advanced training can be found on Collectors Exposed, Credit InfoCenter, DebtorBoards, and Ripoff Report.

Demand validation. No validation, no debt. It's that simple.

Go here to obtain the template for the DV letter and read more on your consumer rights under the FDCPA:

Debt Collector
It's a collection agency, called me about a ticket in L.A.- never been, in a car I've never own, with a wrong license # so how they got my phone # I still can't figure out. Not sure if it's a phishing scam, so don't give out important info.

Received an automated call that said they had called several times, but had only called one time that I knew of.  Were very insistent.  Wanted a return call from son who is deployed with the military. Didn't say why they wanted to speak to him. Not planning to call.

Got an automated call from a "Ms. Simms" for my son in the military.  They say they have called several times, but have only called once.  Want us to have him call them at this number, but don't say what it is about.  Not planning to call.

Recorded dial and message.  Call to number answered automatically as Harris and Harris. Just get left on hold.  No one comes on line.
