I just missed a call from this number and I did just apply for social security, so if it is a scam they have hacked the S&S database.

Did not answer call because I did not recognize the number.  Did a search on the number and found this site.

It really is the Social Security Number in Chicago.  My husband is signing up for Social Security and they called to verify one thing.  If you dial the number back there is a message that the Social Security Administration owns that number and may call you back.  They did call 2 time in a row and I answered the second one.  So not to worry!

This is a legit #. We verified this # with the local SS office. It is a  # connected with SS office in Chicago, ILL.

I actually applied for a job in the SS office and one of my interviewers called me from that number. So yes - it is legit. It is a SS office. and I guess it might not be a bad idea to call them back if you got phone calls from them.

Received call from this number @ 17:45 on 5 February, 2013.  Phone rang only once, however caller ID snagged "Name Unavailable" and "312-575-6999".  Because of your web site, I have instructed the household on the proper handling of any future calls from this phone listing  - "Make an appointment via the U.S. Mail ...".  Thank you for this most helpful web site.  It is the first place I check, under such circumstances.

A scam. The caller ID is faked to look like official business. The SSA does not have my new cell number. If the SSA needs to contact me they can use the standard USPS mail that they normally use, and then I can go down to their office so they can cut me their very large check.

Update...I called SSA National office and was assured by a live agent that the phone number and name of person calling was indeed the Payment Center for SSA. located in Chicago and that there were notes on my file about the call and the info that was being asked for. But do your own research before making any move that deals with personal info.

I'm sure you do. If I were a scammer I would say the same to keep the scam going. I think you have to post more info on yourself to prove you are with the SSA. What a joke!!!

I'm in amazement that this phone number is still around after all of these complaints. I just got the call on Sat. morning 2-11-12. Same odd requests. I asked for a return call number and was given 1-312-575-6698...of course I called back just to see and it was ansswered by the person that called me. So I'm in wonder of it all together. I'm just going to ask that a request for info be maled to me.

This is identity theft in action. Caller trying to get personal information so that they can steal your identity and rob your bank accounts.  That's why they want your mother's maiden name and bank routing number.

Never divulge anything to someone who calls you on the phone or sends you an email.  Always contact the agency in question directly.

This scam apparently has obtained information of people who have applied for SS benefits.

This number is legit. I got a call from there today and did not answer. I googled the number and was sent to this site. While I was reading the info I got an alert on my cell stating that I had a voice message. I checked my messages and found that it was my aunt who works for Social Security calling me. It is in Chicago, IL and it is on Madison street. I repeat it is LEGIT!

This is a generic outgoing number from a Social Security office in Chicago that is calling to resolve some matter.  You'll likely get a letter if you choose not to answer.

I highly doubt this is a Social Security phone number.  When you try to trace it, it shows an an unlisted landline in Chicago.  Others have reported getting various fraudulent calls from this number.  Caller beware.

Someone called me from this number and stated that they were the Social Security Administration.  They wanted to discuss an overpayment, and mentioned my daughter's name.  I told them to send me something in the mail.  She said, "You haven't received anything in the mail?"  I said, "No."  She said that she would send something by mail.  She hung up.  I talked to my daughter and said that if they were calling about her, why didn't they mention an overpayment for my son?  They almost immediately called back and said, "we made a mistake.  It is for [,my son's name]"  I repeated that they should send something by mail.  She said okay and hung up.   Out of curiosity, I called the number back,  I got a auto-message that it was the SS Office on Madison st. [no city name mentioned].  I hung up and said out loud, "Madison Street in [my city name]!?!  Not with a 312 area code!"  Then I called the number back again and the voice ADDED... "Chicago, IL."  I was totally outdone!!  What?!  Is my house bugged or something??!!!  How can a voicemail message change up in a couple of minutes!???  It was a totally different message!!  I am SOOOoooo glad I told them to send me mail on the issue!

(312)575-6999 is associated with (312)506-5084. This is a scam of some sort. I recently found out that my identity was stolen (3 student loans taken out in my name, my social security number). I can only assume that these scumbags have purchased my identity and are trying to scam me.

I work with the Social Security Administration every day.  This IS a legitimate number.  If you are uncomfortable giving information out over the phone, ask them to contact you by mail.
