They call your home phone and listen through your reciever.

I got a call from this number but I am in Canada and have nothing to do with anyone in Chicago. The caller ID came up as Dover, NH. Weird?

It is the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court in Chicago.

I just received a call too- the guy said he was a private investigator and was doing a background check on someone that applied there and my # was given as a reference. I have never heard of the person he was asking about.

I agree with "From Chicago" that this is a General Info line, so whoever calls from the Cook County Govt may appear as calling from the 312-603-5500 line.

If you have any business with Cook County, simply call whatever office you have business with and see if that office called.  I received a call from 312-603-5500 but heard nothing.  I remembered that I'd requested archived files last week, so I called the General Records, Probate line.  The file I requested had indeed arrived.

Per www.suffredin.org/PDFs/CountyServiceDirectory.pdf which is the Cook County Service directory, 312-603-5500 is the General Information number for General Information for all offices and departments in the Cook County Government.  It's probably just the main switchboard number so all calls look to be coming from there.

This number called me 3 times in a row this morning, but no message. From other replies in this string, it appears to be legit.

I got a call from this number - it's the Cook County Assessor's office.  They were looking for a woman, don't remember the name.  Anyway, I don't know her.  I informed them as such.  They have stopped calling.

This obviously has to do with some financial issue with Cook County, probably real estate taxes.

How they connected my number with her is unknown.  I did not ask.

I mailed a Vital Records request about a week ago to purchase my sister's death certificate from Cook County, Illinois Dept of Vital records. Maybe they were verifying that I had a working telephone number. I missed the call. When I returned the call to the number I just got a switchboard operator who didn't know who called me.

This number keeps calling my phone and hanging up.  But no name shows up on the caller id

I just received  and missed 10 very quick calls in a row from this number to my cell phone, which is a Orlando Florida number. Moments before I received the 10 calls to my cell I was on a business call from Chicago on my office phone (also in Orlando) . Very strange. I called back and got the general Cook County voicemail receptionist. No way of knowing why they called.

It is the Cook County State's Attorney Office.  My experience is that they call for a legitimate reason, i.e., it is not a prank call or a telemarketing call.

It's not just one particular office. This number could be any Cook County or government office in the George Dunn building on 69 W. Washington.

Got a phone call today, left no message.  It's kind of scary because it's the Cook County Commisioner.  If I did something wrong, you'd think they would leave a message.  I called back and it was a switchboard operator who told me any county office could have called.

Chicagoans often call Minneapolitans because combine a crazed court clerk with the 6 and 3 button being so close to each other results in calls to Minneapolis cell phones, apparently she wanted Lex who was working on their IT system or something

This is the Cook County Court Clerk. They use this line to call people to let them know the archived case files they ordered are in. The problem is that the orders are hand-written, as are the contact numbers. It is very likely that the clerk is simply attempting to call an attorney or other legal worker who has really illegible handwriting (and are mis-reading a number or two).

Either that or it's really bored clerks prank calling. If you didn't order a file from Cook County (or have other dealings with the court clerks), just ignore it.

I keep getting calls from this number, too, but no caller ID or messages.  Reverse directories give no info, so I googled the number and got the Cook County (Chicago, IL) Government Administrative Offices. I live in Chicago but have no idea why they'd be calling ... or how they got my cell number.
