I am so glad I looked this number up and found this site. I just got a voicemail from a foreign sounding man, Indian sounding, and he stated he was from the justice department and my social would be locked and the police would be at my house or job to arrest me if I didn't respond. I didn't know what on the world was happening for a minute, then brain kicked in thank goodness. Thanks to everyone on here.

A caller who calls himself Officer Wilson from the Department of Justice has called me twice and contacted my work. He does sound like he is from India. This person threatens to take legal action against me by having me arrested. Additionally, he has explained that I have committed fraud. He additionally explained that he will have officers arrive at my home and work to arrest me directly. I spoke to a detective already. This is a scam!!!!! I was informed that these types of calls happen all the time. These individuals use burner phones to get their money by threatening people. Additionally, this person told me "Good Luck and God Bless". No officer would call you and state these words. Do not fall for this phone call. I did tell this individual that I have contacted the FBI and local authorities.

I have received a number of calls from this number.  They never left a message.  I finally answered one this morning and it was a foriegner saying that I was approved for a loan from the government.  I didn't apply for a loan so I said I was going to report him and he said that this company is a legitimate business named "Fastcashjeannie.com".  So I went to the web site and sure enough it is for a payday loan.  I have never applied for one of these, so I wonder how they get my info and start calling.

I have received two calls now from a Deputy officer Wilson? He is advsing me if i do not pay some amount by the end of the day , he will send my information to the federal goverment to have them i guess press charges or something, point he keeps making is i will go to JAIL, if i do not pay the amount he is asking for, funny thing is also i have to bring cash to the nearset store and do something that way to send it to him. I however did report it the first time it happened to my local sherrifs office, they sent a REAL deputy to my office and he spoke with me for awhile about all of these scams that are going on right and he said they can not track them really cause the numbers lare not tied to a certain business or place. Like prepaid phones or something? Anyway i was scared the first time he called , i mean no one wants to here they are going to jail, so if he calls again, i am going to laugh at him, cause what else can you do really, it is sad what kinda things are going on right now.

Section 809 of the FDCPA http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre27.pdf requires 3rd-party debt collectors to give debtors written notice of debt (the key word is *shall*) :
"§ 809. Validation of debts
(a) Within five days after the initial communication with a consumer in connection with the collection of any debt, a debt collector shall, unless the following information is contained in the initial communication or the consumer has paid the debt, send the consumer a written notice containing?
(1) the amount of the debt;
(2) the name of the creditor to whom the debt is owed;
(3) a statement that unless the consumer, within thirty days after receipt of the notice, disputes the validity of the debt, or any portion thereof, the debt will be assumed to be valid by the debt collector;
(4) a statement that if the consumer notifies the debt collector in writing within the thirty-day period that the debt, or any portion thereof, is disputed, the debt collector will obtain verification of the debt or a copy of a judgment against the consumer and a copy of such verification or judgment will be mailed to the consumer by the debt collector; and
(5) a statement that, upon the consumer?s written request within the thirty-day period, the debt collector will provide the consumer with the name and address of the original creditor, if different from the current creditor."

A Collection Agent May Not?

Here are the top 11 actions prohibited by the The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act:

Misrepresent Him or Herself

  A debt collector may not misrepresent himself as an attorney or law enforcement officer.

Use the Telephone to Annoy or Harass

  A collection agent may not cause a telephone to ring or engage any person in telephone conversation repeatedly or continuously with an intent to annoy, abuse, or harass anyone at the called number.

Threaten Arrest or Lawsuit

  A collection agent may not threaten a consumer with arrest. It may not threaten legal action that is either not permitted or not actually contemplated. In other words, a the threat of a lawsuit may be an empty one.

Use Abusive or Threatening Language

  A debt collector may no use abusive or profane language in the course of communication related to the debt.

Publish a Bad Debt List

  Publishing the consumer?s name or address on a "bad debt" list is prohibited.

Contact By Embarrassing Media

  A debt collector may not communicate with a consumer by post card. It may not use any language or symbol, other than the debt collector?s address, on any envelope when communicating with a consumer by use of the mails or by telegram. A debt collector may use its business name if such name does not indicate it is in the debt collection business.

Contact a Consumer at Work

  A collection agent may not communicate with consumers at their place of employment after being told this is unacceptable or prohibited by the employer.

Seek Unjustifiable Amounts

  A debt collector may not demand any amounts not permitted under an applicable contract or as provided under law.

Contact a Consumer Represented by an Attorney

  A collection agent may not contact a consumer after it learns the consumer is represented by a lawyer.

Communicate With a Consumer After Receiving a Validation Request

  If a consumer sends a written §1692g response within 30 days, the collection agent may not communicate with the consumer until it mails the consumer the requested verification of original creditor's name and address.

Communicate With Third Parties

  A debt collector may not reveal or discuss the nature of a consumer?s debts with third parties other than the consumer?s spouse or attorney. A collection agent may contact neighbors or co-workers only to obtain location information. It may contact a third party again if it has reason to believe the information the party provided previously is false.

Bills.com FDCPA FAQ

Below are questions Bills.com readers ask frequently:

Can a Collection Agent Call My Cell Phone?

  Yes. However, if you tell the debt collector it may not use that number because it is a cell phone, it may not contact you again at that number.

I Keep Receiving Dozens of Calls From Collection Agents. Is That Legal?

  No. Unscrupulous collection agents will use "block parties" or "office parties" where they contact a consumer, multiple neighbors, or co-workers telling them they need to reach the consumer on an urgent matter. This is not permitted under the FDCPA.

A Collector Says I Will Be Arrested if I Do Not Pay

  This was a true statement before the US Civil War, but has not been true since. People may be arrested if an aggressive judge files a bench warrant for a person who does not appear at a hearing relating to a lawsuit regarding a debt. However, in that case, the offense is the failure to respond to a court order, and not the existence of the debt. As stated above, it is illegal under the FDCPA to threaten a consumer with arrest if the consumer does not pay the debt.

It is against the law - report the calls to the FTC, the FBI and your state's Attorney General.  Never pay money to a caller who cannot or will not mail you proof of debt and that they can collect said debt in your state.  From other posters, though, these sound like scammers calling from outwith the US.  Bottom line - they can't do anything to you.  When they call you back, tell them that the FBI has been alerted and is monitoring and tracing all calls they make to you.

This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you may have filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.

ABC News released an investigative report on this scam a year ago:

These guys buy up old debt and try to get people to pay up. Contacted me about a Payday Advance Loan that was discharged as part of my bankruptcy over two years ago. I just reported this number and "Officer Jeff Lesnar of the Detroit Department of Justice" to the Michigan Attorney General's Office. The woman was very nice and said it's definitely a scam and was genuinely concerned that this guy was pretending to be a government agent. After that call, I  called Jeff back and left him a long message as to why we couldn't be friends any more and told him that if he continued to call me at work or on my cell phone I would be calling the real department of justice.

I received a call from my principal at my work saying this guy had called stating he was from the Dept. of Justice from the same 313 number!  I called the number & he told me the same thing, that I had a payday loan & that the EFT from my bank was returned & federal charges were being brought up against me unless I paid $328.00 today!  He said the loan was from the main company Advance American, but that they have hundreds of loans companies underneath them & could not tell me the name of the 3rd party loan company nor the date of my loan!  And that he would see me in federal court in a few hours!  Be careful, they do have your information!   I will be filing a complaint now!

Received a call at our law firm today asking for one of our employees - the called seemed fishy as we deal with the Secret Service on some of our Federal cases. He stated that one of our employees was a lead suspect on a case... and that she would be arrested if she did not respond quickly!?! This information seemed unlikely and he was informed that any "indictments" or "warrants" that he had could be sent to our office as we would be representing our employee. He was informed that we would be reporting the call and information that we received; after some back and forth and he hung up and has not called back. We filed a police report and reported the number to the appropriate agencies.

Total Scam. Do not give any information out.
