This guy is still up to his old tricks as of May 10, 2013. I found a bogus posting from him on Zillow, reported him to Zillow for it, and then contacted the property owners whose property was listed (they had no idea). I also contacted the Better Business Bureau. I'm glad I did some initial searching on the guy's name and phone #...otherwise I never would have known to dig deeper.

He just posted an ad for a nice, shiny studio apartment in San Francisco on Padlister, using the email anon2950404@padlister.com and the phone number 415-685-8578 (which goes straight to voicemail). When I emailed that address, I received another email asking me to contact  williamlogan797@yahoo.com. The scammer seems to have used the same text in our correspondence that he used with others:
"
The apartment is still available and like i said before the apartment is current occupied by newly wed couple on their honeymoon until April 13th. The apartment was offer to the newly wed as a gift from the owner and he gave me specific instructions not to show the apartment to potential renters until they moved out.

You can have the apartment reserve for you until you move-in by filling a non-binding lease which gives you full refund upon viewing if the apartment is not exactly what you wanted. It also requires making deposit for the first month rent plus the security deposit.

Let me know if you wish to proceed.

Regards,

William Logan.
"

I wonder if it's one person or a group all using the same strategy. Beware.

New Name for SCAMMER! Here is the email reply when I looked into renting apartment 1288 Ala Moana Blvd, Honolulu, HI...as they say if it sounds too good to be true keep your hands off away from your wallet and try to place theirs behind their backs...this crap is so widespread and MUST BE STOPPED!
The pictures you saw online are the exact pictures and conditions of the apartment, the apartment was newly renovated. Fully furnished

Sorry for not informing you in my previous email that the apartment is not available for immediate move-in or viewing as the apartment is currently occupied by newly wed on their honeymoon until May 13th. The apartment will be ready from May 14th move-in or viewing.
I wanted to wait until May 9th before responding to inquiries, but the numbers of inquiries are on the high daily, so i decided to respond to inquiries and give whoever want to reserve the apartment before then the opportunity to do so to avoid missing out.
The utilities included in the monthly Rent are Electric, Gas, Heat, Water, Air Conditioning, Internet, Parking for one (1) Car, Sewer, Trash, and Cable/Satellite TV and Washer/Dryer
This is a pet friendly apartment with no extra fee.
Let me know if the timing is right and if you wish to reserve the apartment now so i can forward lease contract for your review and reservation details for booking.
The terms and conditions of the contract gives you full refund if you do not want the apartment upon viewing.
Let me know if you wish to proceed.

Warm Regards,
James Belote.

Total scam!  Guy used the name Diego Fernandez and said he was the manager for Danny Roosevelt Wallis and wanted a security deposit and 1st months rent wired to Pleasant Grove Investmemts, LLC.  We are in San Francisco so we went to the place and talked to the guy at the front desk and he said he has never heard of anyone with that name.  DONT SEND THIS GUY ANY MONEY!  He says you have to send him the deposit before viewing the place.

Same here!!!!!! Thank God for online sites like these! At least something really helpful and worth checking out online!

I cannot believe how they even sleep at night scamming people!!!!

Same thing!!! Asking for wire without credit check. Used some other agent guy's name who actually has really good feedback so I kinda took that bait but then when asked for wire it was so strange I googled and saw this thread!! Also, newlyweds excuse was used too! Siiiiighhh.

Be extra extra careful out there people!!!!!!

Same thing, same number, name this time was Christopher Johnson. Tried to get first months rent and deposit.  He left his email below.  I was very suspicious when they requested a wire transfer without a credit check.  Also, the place was far below market value.  I appreciate everybody's posts above and I hope mine helps.

You can also request that Zillow remove the listing.

On the listing page, choose "Edit" (in blue, a bit below the pictures of the unit).
Then choose "Report problem with listing."
In the "Problem" menu, select "Rental scam" and describe it.

They seem to be pretty good about removing flagged listings within a day or so.

He also listed an apartment on Beale St. in San Francisco on Zillow with the same phone number (http://www.zillow.com/homedetails/501-Beale-S ... 0255781_zpid/#0).

I got a similar story to the ones above (wanting first month's rent and the security deposit) but refusing to show the unit.

This same guy posted an ad on Zillow, working with another guy named Ronald Nastaad, saying that we needed to give him a deposit to hold the apartment, and again we couldn't see it until the "newly weds" honey moon was over! He wanted $1800 plus a $1200 deposit! How do I report this?

I replied to an ad on Zillow for an apartment about $1000 below retail value in NYC.  (Listing: http://www.zillow.com/homedetails/455-E-86th- ... dsearch-address)

Guy gave me story about newlyweds, said that the apartment was not available to view until March 31 when they got back from honeymoon.  Asked for $3500, wired to him, "refundable!" to hold apartment until viewing.  Sent me a lease contract.  Was told to act quickly because other people also were interested.

This webpage appears to be their home base.  http://activerain.com/wihicks123

This guy is trying to rent out apartments on trulia.com and he is saying that newlyweds currently occupy the place so I would need to reserve it now without seeing it.

The apartments I am looking for are in San Francisco.  I asked to speak with the newlyweds as a reference, and this was the number that was given to me.

He then gave me an email address that I could communicate with them at, but the email address was at the same provider as his (yahoo) and it also ended in "86".  How could 2 completely random people both end their email addresses "firstlast86@yahoo.com"?  I suppose both the agent and the leaser *could* be the same age.

This has scam written all over it.  Report it to the authorities if you see this number.

Likely scam number. Deposit of $2500 was given and a contract signed. Showed up at requested location in NYC on the date requested and the number now goes directly to voice mail. Not sure what to do at this point.
