This is the Veteran of Foreign Wars calling for donations! Call the number back from your phone and listen to the automated instructions on how to get off their list. What a pain!!

This number has just called me 4 times in the last 15 minutes. 7:32 pm, 7:42, 7:43, 7:45. I keep answering it because I can't turn the ringer off in the back bedroom where my husband's sleeping. I do a quick On/Off, but I know that still trips the auto-dialer to know that it's a valid number. I'm 165 miles from Wichita, I know this isn't "local".I did pick up once and didn't say anything. Nothing tripped, no message, no person, which I think has happened before but this number just keeps calling.

I am a 6 hours drive from Wichita and have friends in that area, but when it said LOCAL, that was the tip to me that I was dealing with someone dishonest and so I let the machine catch it with my special "too busy at work to take a call now" message. it has thinned out my telemarketers by about 70 %

Sunday afternoon, 4 Dec 2011, phone rings, Caller ID shows "LOCAL" however can't be since Area Code is 316. Checked phones Caller ID and 316-665-6203 was/is the number calling. I won't call back since I have read the above posts. Get similar calls all the time. The Bot dials several numbers at the same time and the first to answer gets the attention---so I let it ring three times and someone else must answer before I can get to it. Question: Why do we as people think that we have to answer the phone as near to the first ring as we can? Just a question.

Thank you, Jeff, for that very informative report.
I've been receiving these calls for the past few weeks but they never leave a message or answer when I pick up the phone. Caller ID says "LOCAL" but it's a Wichita, KS phone number, 165 miles from my house. I called back just to see who it was and I got a recording that said 'solicitations were under way for the Veterans of Foreign Wars'.
Thanks to the information you gave, I will file a complaint with the FTC right after I send this.

This company called, it showed up as local on my caller ID. I did not answer but yet tryed to google it to see who it was.

I did not pick up because if i do not recognize the callers I assume it is a telemarketer or wrong number.
Caller ID showed LOCAL. Which it isn't. 316 area code is 75 miles from me.

please stop jerks like these from bothering people with their insistent phone calls

Was taking an afternoon nap when this number came in. I didn't pick up the phone and there was no message of course. Name on caller ID said "LOCAL". That area code is like an hours drive at least from me. Pisses me off that phone providers allow these type of phone annoyers put whatever they want in the 'name' part of the caller ID.

Recorded message: This is the VFW Department of Cancer...."
At that point my husband hung up. We assume it was a solicitor for donations.
The Caller ID identified the caller as "Local" (where they would normally have the caller's name). Not likely! We're well over a hundred miles from the nearest location in the 316 area code.
I agree in part with telemarketers-r-scum - never donate over the phone, unless you can verify independently (don't ask the caller) that the solicitor is legitimate, authorized by the organization, AND turns over at least 90% of the receipts to the organization (turning over 10% is more common). All that is a bit impractical while you have the caller online, so it's simplest just to follow the rule: don't donate via online solicitations.
Besides, even if the solicitor is legitimate - you're ENCOURAGING THIS PRACTICE of bothering people at home. Just don't do it!
Btw, I have read that call centers have devices on their phones that modulate the volume of the incoming signal - in other words, a loud shrill whistle or even an airhorn is not going to bother them. Don't know whether it's true or not.

We hung up at that point.
Caller ID identified the caller as Local (where it would usually give the name). Sure, it is - we are well over a hundred miles from the nearest location using that area code.

You have confused "donating" with letting scumbags from a call center trick honest from money intended for charity.
NEVER DONATE ON THE PHONE. NEVER. No exceptions!
And then you want people irritated by these calls to call the scumbag telescammers back??? You're just full of bad advice (among other things).
Get a whistle and BLAST THEM when they call. It's your best hope of delivering the message you don't want the call. They're not very bright, though, so you may have to repeat. An airhorn works too.

This telemarketing company provides service for various organizations. At the moment of this writing, they are doing so for Kansas Veterans of Foreign Wars. Call 1-800 650 3887 9a-9p EST and follow the prompts (press 9) to be removed from their list. Or make a donation, if that suits you.

Another one of those numbers who call and when you answer hang up. I need to know the name of the company who is calling for DAV, as the message I received when I call this number said DAV, and they would call back. I contacted one of these companies and received an email saying they would remove my number from any of the lists they handle, so I want to know who this number is really associted with.
