Depends on the company.. not all legal company's obey the laws, some cross the line big time and are no better then extortion scammers..   So the OP may not be exaggerating at all.  Just because a company might be legal doesn't mean they operate legal.  Responding to a four year old post is not real intelligent, stop being a troll..

Quit exaggerating.  You must be in debt with more than one company or have numerous debts.  They don't call you every 5 minutes

Adastra is a collection agency; they collect on behalf of pay day loan companies that are trying to recoup payments, etc..

We have been receiving phone calls from this number for the past COUPLE OF YEARS.  Originally we answered the calls and let them know the person they were asking for no longer has this number AND HASN'T HAD IT FOR ALMOST FIVE YEARS.  We used to get a 'live person' when we answered and one particular time a man with a heavy accent actually threatened me over the phone. Now it is simply a recorded message ... so we no longer answer their calls.

Debt Collector
I receive calls from the 316 number on rare occasions but I never answer... I took out a payday loan and unfortunately defaulted on it for personal reasons. I took full responsibility for it and what not. I even started making payments to Ad Astra when they sent me info in the mail about my debt. However, It's been over 3 years and they are STILL trying to collect more money. They are saying I still owe over 200.00 which is absolutely BS.. I know that is incorrect. My dispute isn't that they aren't a real company is that they are trying to get more money then needed. It has gone on my credit report and now it's causing me to look bad and granted it's my full responsibility to make sure that they received ALL payments I have made but geez. Most payday loan companies that I know of will have the debt collector settle for atleast half of what the original loan was if it can't be paid in full.

Just keep getting calls from this 316-771-8890 number over and over.  This phone number on this cell is new, not been used by me or given to anyone.  Does anyone know how to block unwanted calls?

Debt collectors or Collection Agencies ?   - do not fall under the Do not call registry.

These jerks will & do call on weekends even though it is against Federal Laws.  When they call, I like to click on talk, then immediately on end.  I know it has to bug them.  On weekends I will answer with ,? You are in violation of Federal Laws, and I will sue you for $1,000.00 for each call!  Yes, it is legal to sue for $1,000.00 each violation.  Please keep reading the rest of my post.

However, Federal Law says you don't have an obligation to Collection Agencies or Debt Collectors; you can send them a written letter and they cannot contact you after that.  They also have to contact you within 5 days after the first phone call, letter etc., and give you validation/proof or judgment of the debt.  You are not required to ask for it.

This law is known as the Fair Debt Collector Practices Act.  You can get it at FTC.gov; as well as other Consumer Protection Laws.

Most collection agencies, purchase your delinquent debt for pennies on the dollar.  Guess what? It is no longer your debt!!!  You don't have any agreement/contract with the debt collector or collection agency.  Your only agreement/contract was with the original creditor.

In the Law of Novation: if a debt is purchased by another, for that to be a legal owed obligation, a new contract / agreement has to be written and signed by all parties.  Google Law of Novation and read up!!!

No I am not an attorney, just a well knowledged, educated consumer.  I have spent the past year studying various Federal Consumer Protection Laws.  I wasn't just satisfied knowing I could send a letter to a Collection Agency/Debt Collector and they had to go away.  I read that in the Fair Debt Collector practices Act law;  I needed to know why, what law tells me the reason why I can.

Everything I have typed, I have learned basically on my own through reading, studying, printing out and binding the laws and underlining them.  Not to mention the knowledge I have gained on my own fighting two lawsuits without an Attorney.

I was sued by a Collection Agency, and waiting for a Court date. The Collection Agency Attorney, sent us a letter willing to dismiss with prejudice our lawsuit, if I dismiss our Cross/Counter Claim for Fair Debt Collector Practices Act violations.  Oh, I forgot to mention, we do not have an Attorney representing us; and I have not had any legal experience, in the past whatsoever.

I have read / printed & bound, my State's Rules of Civil Procedure and Rules of Civil Procedure - Evidence.  I catch Attorneys on violations of State Rules of Civil Procedure all the time.  And our Judge's let them get away with it.

And Mr Collector dated July 31, 2008, it appears that you have never had your life turned upside down, because a good job, not high paying by any means, but a supposed secure job, got your hours cut by 3/4.  And then a couple years later, as you are just recovering, you lose that job.  And when you are in your 50's, a new job is not so easy to come by.  And when that happens, then what?  Or what about a major illness, guess you've never had that either - too bad.  Maybe if you did, you'd understand why and how people end up getting in financial straights. Not because they chose to, or decided they were going to find loopholes to get out of paying obligations etc.

What if the money isn't there to pay these debts to begin with?  We've been barely able to pay a mortgage, let alone credit cards etc. It's easy to tell someone else what to do.  I hope someday, something throws your secure little world off its axis, and you find yourself in the very situation as some of us here. Maybe then you'd learn it isn't such a cut/dry situation.

Oh, we've struggled.  And the job last hasn't exactly been replaced.  We're still behind in our Mortgage and trying to catch up, as with our other legal obligations.  I can't work because of various health conditions, or I would, including a part time job at least.  My husband started his own company with the tools of the trade, and now contracts for copier, computer, IT technical jobs as he has a computer science degree, and has years of experience in the others, especially the wide format copier / printers / computers.

People, please read the Fair Debt Collector Practices Act; if a Debt Collector violates any one harrassment or other law in there; Federal Laws says you can sue them for $1,000.00 per violation.  Do it, and then THEY can pay off YOUR obligations!!!

And to the Collector's who follow the rules.  Remember these people probably don't actually owe, the money your company is trying to collect.
If your company bought the debt, from the original creditor - they don't legally owe you/your employer!!!

Again I am not an Attorney - but have learned these by my own experiences.  Their are Attorneys you could talk to, and I would, if any violations of the laws have occured in your circumstance.  I am posting this strictly to help others maybe have a piece of mind, if they are up all night worrying about financial problems, and sick to their stomach in worry as I have been, and still are in some ways. I am again just a well informed, knowledgable consumer, who has spent hours studying the laws, because I had no where else to turn for help.  If anything I have written, causes you questions, please seek the advice of an Attorney.

Certain situations such as Mortgages and Car Payment loans usually do not apply here; so you may need to seek the advice of a Lawyer for your individual situation.

They called me on my home phone.  Sounded like a personal call from her ex.  I think it was.  Do you think a place like this would let them make a personal call?  Because he is from NC and this person had the accent and everything.  He doesn't know kansas city from Kansas the state.

This is a collection agency for Speedy Cash & Rapid Cash (western states).  They collect on payday loans, title loans, and signature loans.  They are a legit company, and most of the collectors are great to work with.  As long as you are making an honest effort, THEY WILL WORK WITH YOU.  I know this from personal experience.

You are a former collector so why aren't you still one? Perhaps it was the business? I searched for this company on the BBB and can't find them.

If you feel like this is a paid account, the way to handle it is to send a written letter to them disputing the debt. They must then go back to their client and verify that the debt is valid. If during their investigation they find that the debt is not valid they must stop collections and send a deletion to the Bureaus. I looked this company up on the ACA web site and they are in good standing. If they are collecting on the debt, they are doing so because they believe it is valid. Quit whining and own up to your responsibilities.

As a former collector, I can tell you that 99% of the people who dispute a collection account are either mistaken or are trying to weasal out of a debt. There are bad apple collectors out there, but they are rare. I gaurantee that this company is not trying to double collect.

Maybe you could try calling them and ask for a supervisor. If they are like any of the agencies I have worked for, they will want to get it straightened out.

SEE BELOW FOR CONTACT INFORMATION FOR
AD ASTRA RECOVERY SERVICES, INC.

Ad Astra Recovery Services, Inc. was already paid-in-full back in August of 2008, right up-front, via credit card, with a tracking transaction reference number, for protection.  All went through fine.  My credit card company is paid and good.  Today, November 20, 2008, out of the clear blue, Ad Astra called and tried to DOUBLE-COLLECT, which is illegal!  I have the local District Attorney after them now for illegal fraudulent business practices.  I may also get both the California and Kansas Attorney Generals after them since they are going across state lines trying to perpetrate a crime of trying forceful, threatening, harrassing, illegal DOUBLE-COLLECTING.  I asked the caller for the company's phones, fax, email, and web address.  He lied to me and said that Ad Astra did not have a web site or an email address.  Online research proved that Ad Astra did have an email address and two web site addresses.  Their 2 web sites list either one old or a new physical location address.

I've received the same message from "AdAstra", but coming from a different phone number(877 area code). They would call at all hours of the day and night. Now they're calling from this "316" phone number. I believe its a total scam. I read on the "877" post that they try to convince you that you owe them money.

Tip: Try not to use your name in your greeting. It makes it harder for them to prove that they're calling the right person. You can also try to put your number on the "Do not call" list.

I changed my greeting to my automated phone number. That's when they stopped leaving messages. However, they would still call, but hang up.
