This number belongs to Capital Growth and Research, the parent of American Funds. American Funds is a reputable company and will only contact their existing investors. I can't believe anyone called at 10:47 pm. Even thier California operation isn't in the office at that time. Generally they will only call if there is a question with an investment or trade that was made. Sales are made exclusively through independent investment brokers, not directly with American Funds

If you have any investments at all (i.e. mutual funds, an ira, or 401k at work) you probably have some American Funds in them.

I don't have investments there. They call my house phone which is on the do not call list. They called my cell phone last night at 10:47 p.m. That is unreasonable.

That phone number is for American Funds. You obviously have an investment there. Maybe you should have done a Google search for the number or called back rather than freaking out on an internet website. Wow.
