He might be a scam artist but is it illegal ?

Is he committing any crime ?

If so, who do you report this to ?

How can we go about notifying the religious community ?

I know Scott Koren (his real name) from our childhood.  He grew up in Terre Haute, Indiana and now lives in Orlando, Florida.  He is a habitual scam artist who preys on the good intentions of others.  He is not married.  He doesn't have twin daughters.  I talked to him last night, and he asked me for money to fix his broken car.  Too bad I know better.  He hung up on me after I refused.  He's moved on to a new phone number.

The caller wants money to be wired to him for travel. Claims his mother died in a DWI and his car broke down while at the funeral. Said he visited our church with his two little girls recently. Gave the address of a home that is for sale in our town. Could not give any details about the accident. Used the name Scott Corn, said his mother was Ann Corn.

this number has called many times, no messages left.

He's now SCOTT CLARK with the same story.  When I began to ask personal questions, his cell phone suddenly needed to be charged.

Just got this exact story today in western NC. He used the name scott koren, but the familys names were all the same and the exact scenario. My advice is to ask some detailed questions about his experience at your church....that seemed to trip him up and I became suspicious and went online. Thanks for the info....BEWARE this caller. He has called my phone at least 8 times

Scott Korum (Spelled it out for me) called our pastor who referred him to me...he was very persistent and had an answer for every one of my questions. Before attempting to wire money, I prayed that if wasn't legit, God would stop it from going through. The wire transfer could not be completed because of verification issues. I called him back and told him I couldn't help him, he became very distressed, put his "wife", Maryanne, on the phone for a few minutes to tell me how disappointed they were that they couldn't go home...and how they had recently been converted and prayed and read their Bible every day. I decided to try one more thing...I called Greyhound and they told me that the bus didn't even stop in Fern Park, Fl. I called him back, told him there was too much information that I could not verify and that he should go to the local police station, they would connect him with someone who could help...He hung up on me!! I should have checked him out online first!!

I received the same message today as mentioned with other postings asking for money. He is still working the system and when I called back he tried for a minute to keep on with his story.  When I asked him a couple of pointed questions he hung up.

Got a call on our church answering machine from a Scott, requesting a call back at 321-442-4206.  Glad this site exists!

Got a call this afternoon from Scott Korn. Same story about his mother, broke down and cute little girls.  He asked a lot of why questions about death and working through grief.  Talked 25 minutes and thot this guy is legit.   Caught me on a busy day couldn't check him out till tonight.  sent money earlier,  So many things didn't add up but he had an answer for them. How he got our parsonage number, don't know.  He's pitiful.  Know why some of the old men in our church seem uncompassionate.  We just need wisdom with our compassion.  He did say he would like to come by next week and talk more.  When he does I'll get all our money back...

Same exact story at 10:30 pm.  Almost sent him money.  There is obviously no fear of God before this man's eyes.

Seems like Scott Koren is a very resourseful man with a well practiced story.  Called at 2:45am.  BEWARE

He has struck in Oregon.
Caller ID said 321-442-4206 and he left the same number on my VM. Wanted to talk about a death.

I was called from (321) 442-4206 at approximately 1:30 am on Sunday morning.  My wife caught the message when it was recorded but didn't wake me.  I checked it out before I left for church.  In a time when so many people are legitimately in need, this type of call is positively criminal!  Let's spread the word and put these individuals out of business!  May the Lord convict them of the error of their ways!

This man called the parsonage home phone here in Iowa this evening at 11 pm. I was not home and my wife took the message for me to call him back. I don't plan to do that. Thanks for posting the warnings

Same guy called our church in Iowa, said he met me at church about a month ago, didn't know the name of the church or my name. Said he had twin daughters Denise and Jessica. He hung up when I asked him the name of the church he was calling.

More info from what I just posted. We live in KY; he called the church on a Sunday night about 7PM and left a message.

Called me in sept same story we wired him $200!  May we pray for this man's soul, his heart has been so hardened that he has resorted to stealing from churches. I got Jim on the phone today and he told mr he was working asked if he could

At 5:30 am the morning of October 14th, I got a call from this number on my home phone...my answer machine picked it up and it was a person who identified himself as Scott, asking me to call back about a desk.  Looked up the number on google and I am thankful to find this post...I will not return the call.  Wonder how in the world he got my home phone #??

Same story, same baloney.  Almost fell for it.  Thank God for this website.  I was racking my brain trying to remember meeting this guy since he said he had visited the church 5 weeks ago.  So thankful for other people sharing their information.

Same story - my pastor tried to wire him money and thankfully his credit card didn't work - he called again this morning and i googled his story and came to this site - won't be sending any money his way.

I received the same call from Scott Kouren at 2:30 am on Friday, Oct. 01, 2010..  He was in Winter Haven, Fl.  His mom was hit and killed again.  He needed the $124.12 to get his family back to Texas. I got in touch with a pastor and he made contact with Scott.  Same story with a few mistakes.  The Pastor called me back with the info about this website.  I'm reporting this to the PD's in the DFW area and to the Tarrant County District Office.

Just got a call from Texas from a brother Pastor with this same story and phone number. Thanx to this site we have a new tool!
I spoke with "scott" but I think I asked too many questions. He was suppose to call me back but hasn't.

In June of this year I was visiting my family in Kentucky  when my brother-in-law a pastor received a call from this man...after several calls to neighboring pastors they established none of them knew this caller or
"his deceased mother" and after calling him back to inform him of such the phone disconnected...Today, September 27th he received another call from the same man saying again his car was broke down, he wanted Pastor Bob to preach the funeral but he needed money to get him  and momma back home.....It seems this man is running a scam on churches and hopefully the state of Florida will track him down !!

We recieved a call from this man today.  This website saved our church $125.  Thank you all for posting.

On Sunday 9/19/10 our church received a call with like story. We sent him $200 via Wal Mart money gram. Romans 12:19...".vengeance is mine ; I will repay saith  the Lord".

Just received a call with all the same info....but he said he name was Scott HOREN and he was stranded in CASSLEBERRY, Florida. He asked me to send him $124.12 via Western Union so they could catch a Greyhound to go home....PLEASE BEWARE!!

Same message received at 4 AM in the morning.

We also got a call from Scott Woren (321-442-4206) at our church with the same story- when a few of us called him back on Monday he related the same story assuming we were answering messages he left for us at our church.  He did not even recognize my accented voice - obviously is working a number of churches at the same time.  Good idea to report scam to Attorney General in FL and your home state as well as Western Union (1-800-448-1492) who will flag his name and force him to get a new state issued ID in order to claim his ill-gotten gains.  I also reported him to the police in Ocoee FL - let's turn up the heat on this low life.
