This is another "spoofed" phone number.  If you call it back, you find it is no longer in service.  These creeps keep changing the number they use so blocking is not effective.  We can block numbers both through our telephone and through our service provider.

We need a way to stop the ability to "spoof" numbers.  If they can't hide behind "out of service" numbers, they might be less inclined to violate the do not call registry.

We need to pressure our legislators to fine service providers who allow calls to be hidden behind these numbers.

Same problem here, but recently I've been trying something different. I'm usually very near my landline during the day, so when any call comes in I quickly look at the Caller ID. If I don't know the number, or it has no id, I'll pick it up after 2 rings and immediately hang it up, without letting it go to the answering machine. My theory, hope, is that maybe a computer system will think it's a bad number, rather than a legit number with an answering machine.

An important point that someone else on a similar site made: the Do Not Call list is probably working fairly well - think of the calls we might get if it wasn't in place. 99% of the these calls we complain about here are purely law-ignoring robo-calls, likely internet based. They flat don't care about the DNC and are just hoping the handful of gullible people, usually elderly, will answer and give up just enough info to make it worth their while. I read elsewhere that the FTC is offering a $50,000 prize for a system that will curtail or eliminate the robo-call problem. Good luck with that, as they say!

I just got a call from this #..ID says unknown caller.  I get these various damn scam calls on my landline all day. I NEVER pick up, let the machine get it...they usually hang up. I was keeping a list of the numbers, but these same companies that are:(pick one)  selling magazines, new credit, security systems, wanting/scamming your bank info, selling RX drugs, or whatever the scam of the day seems to be, have zillions of fake numbers from all over the country.
I worry that elderly people are taken in by all this crap
I DID manage to stop some of them THIS way:  Pick up your phone, dial *60.  Wait for the instructions.  If you do this directly AFTER your recieve one of these calls, the recording will let you "block the last number". Otherwise, you have to ener the specific number you want blocked.  However, it seems my phone company will only let me block 12 numbers in this way, and I've used up my 12. (LOL)
So, try this *60 idea. It doesn't always work for different companies, but it did for my landline company. You might want to Google *60 for more information.  I plan on calling my company to see if there's any other way to block more numbers.  I have a   regional phone company in Texas/Oklahoma, so I don't know if AT&T or other larger ones have this available.
The DNC list is a HUGE JOKE!!!!   Have you EVER heard of ANY company being fined by the DNC?   I haven't!
Good luck!

Sandra,

We see this sort of suggestion a lot, but there are things you should know.  Cost of the call is at most a few pennies.  Sometimes the per minute cost is zero, and it is never more than over a penny or so a minute.

Employees are usually paid on sales, so likely little to no impact there - except to annoy a disposable (and readily replaceable) phone thrall.  In fact, you may save the scammer money, as employees who quit frequently don't get paid what they are owed.

For all your efforts, if you put them out of pocket more than a nickel you've done well.  Most people's time and energy is worth more than that.

As an alternative, read my (and others) posts on the many ways to block such calls.  I personally use whitelisting, which means that I *never* have to deal with unwanted calls.

People don't sweat about these caller's calling you. It's agravating, I know. So what'cha should do is, act interested and KEEP them on the line as LONG as possible. You see, by doing that the caller is paying for the call, also they are paying someone to talk to you. So use them! and laugh when you say, "sorry NOT interested in your GOOD deals". They'll hate you for it. Then YOU hang-up smiling!! This is what YOU call getting even!!

I get the SAME RECORDING as MULTIPLE calls from a number that gives an area code in the DOMINICAN REPUBLIC.

I have on ocassion been able to report scamming calls to FTC (lots of times the links just do not work).  I regularly report these to the DoNotCall.com but have no idea how long (if ever) it will take for action since multiple are foreign area codes.  This one is Florida so maybe that will get them going?

Received a call from this number, ID'ed only as "Florida".  Automated message jabbered on about taking advantage of a tax-season vacation to Disney World. I've never been to Florida, and definitely never have been at any Disney property.  Trying to merely exist during my current economic situation, I have NO interest in going now. Of course, this is either a spoof call/scam or an overpriced deal.

We never got calls like this until we stayed at the Hilton Sandestin in Florida one time. Now we get calls all the time for vacations. I think that hotel sells their customers information and call it semi-legit because they can call you if you've ever done business with them. Do not call list rules don't apply in that case. I always tell hotels not to pass our information out. Personally I think there's no reason for a company to have a phone number. The world uses email for correspondence now. But my husband has old-fashioned ideas.

Phone rang four times, answering machine on to take a message, no message left. Caller ID reads "NAME NOT FOUND." Worse yet, we're on the government's Do Not Call list as well.

The gov't has asked for solutions from all of us,... so let them know that we need a FREE number code to be able to block ANY caller or ANY number. This is an app avialable for cell phones but  Landline
customers have to contact their phone company and pay for this service ???
Ridiculous !
The Gov't run DNC is a miserable failure and we are now bothered by unwanted calls by the hundreds.
Here is the solution :
GIVE US THE ABILITY TO BLOCK ! It's not that hard.

Caller ID displayed name, "FLORIDA."  No message left on answering machine.  Call stayed live long enough for dial tone to be recorded.  Typical telemarketer behaviour.

Submitted complaint to Do No Call, for all the good that will do.

Silent call. No name found by ID. I have received 22 silent calls since January and I am on the government do not call list! Google search shows these numbers to be telemarketers and scams. Before January I almost never got these kinds of calls. I have called some back and a message says the number is no longer in service.

It's easy to spoof Caller ID.  Some VoIP providers allow it, and if you are a telemarketer, you need a lot of lines so getting a T-1 for your phone lines is a no brainer.  Your PBX then controls what is read out on Caller ID.  The thing they cannot spoof is the ANI, Automatic Number Identification.  This is because ANI is used for billing.  If you get a 900 number, the number must be there.  The only problem is that 900 numbers are very expensive.  On the other hand, if the illegal telemarketers have to pay $5 a minute, I'll take the call!
