Ladies watch out (3/12/14) this guy is back on OKC as Gonzalez001 ..... Same 36 y/I USMC soldier in Coal City Camp Nigeria.  Very sad story of having lot mom and dad.... Ending up in Mexico with an abusive uncle and running away to US to start again.... This time, guy is using a pic if himself in uniform, pic of a man with a 2-3 y/I toddler on his lap and yep on his 6 month mission ending May 23..... He did prompt to prefer to text.....

FYI--about 8-10 years ago, I got suckered by a similar profile, this other guy was called Julio Chavez also USMC from south Texas formally on AOL profiles..... Also had a similar profile gonzalez001. This guy ended up being a woman called Ofelia Gonzalez that is a lesbian and looking to connect with women by pretending to be a man. Could it be the same, perhaps. Be careful ladies.

Hi. Thank you for getting back to me. Yes he took down his profile Josesan11. He did text me yesterday asking if I was ok and that he missed me. I didn't reply to him. I'm still very upset. I believed his sweet words. He never asked for money or talked about have trouble with financial thing's. He would just ask how I was feeling and how my daughter was doing. But I was only talking to him a short time. He has a new number it's (323) 989-5540. I hope he gets caught and does time for doing this.

I was already leary about the whole convo with him. I was even more suspicious when he mentioned that his paycheck was delayed. I didn't send him money and made up an excuse as to why I couldn't. I did some research and found this. I'm very cautious about people I interact with online. I hope whoever is running this scam rots in hell.

heh heh .... Indeed I was thinking of those two letters, and the lesser known "Kiss". Let's see how brief I can keep this so I don't bend the topic ....

Match-dot-con, as a high profile target, can't help having a bigger fraud problem, but I didn't find the place well policed. Adding insult, the site operators have been accused repeatedly of running fake mixer events populated with underemployed models and actors sent in to portray site members. eHoardMoney I never joined, but I have lady friends who did with severe regrets. They report that a girl under 30 can be a Goth chick with clitoral piercings or a Greenpeace and animal rights protest queen who empties a gallon of patchouli oil monthly, yet her so-carefully selected matches resulting from the exhausting questionnaire will invariably be pudgy, balding, conservative, God-fearing men over 45 with the social skills of a snapping turtle.

Anyway .... I'd agree that it's dirty pool to wear military affiliation like it's an instant cloak of honor and trust. The ruse could also be provoking maternal instincts in victims, an emotional end-run around better judgment. It would not surprise me if the faux soldiers have added data mining to their scheme. Given the way payday lenders prey upon service members, and their South Asian criminal pals have no qualms about exploiting collected data, maybe it's not a stretch to imagine other ways to monetize the same identities. However, it's simpler to wing it and borrow back stories as you suggest. As with any effective swindle, the story needs only to be convincing, not realistic.

I am replying to singlemom message that you posted. Wow can't believe this idiot jose rivas is still on that site. When I goggled his name and found out all this stuff I text the jose rivas and told him never to contact me again and he asked why so I told him that I goggled his name and found out he is a scammer and a fraudster. He has not text me after that. The next day I checked his profile and it said it had been deleted but from what I am reading from you it seems like he made up another profile with a differant number. O my gosh!! He tells the same story. He says all this sweet stuff so you will fall for him. Its unbelievable!! Anyways he has not contacted me since and he better not. Just be careful and be aware of men saying sweet stuff when you haven't even met them yet. Good luck to you in finding love. Try another website called, POF. You might find better men on there. Good luck and be careful.

Those two dating sites... I presume one begins with an "M" and the other with an "e"?

It makes me ill that these Nigerian-type scammers are posing as (and stealing the identities of) U.S. military personnel.  Many are easily detected because they don't speak the lingo of the soldier, sailor, Marine or airman.  Some have even posed as high-ranking officers, whose Wikipedia bios they copy and clumsily alter (changing third person to first).  These filthy yahoozees don't deserve to polish our service members' boots.

The bottom line is, why would you send money to some random stranger who you've never met before?  Online dating can be fun, however you really have to be aware of the cr@p that scammers try.  There is a bunch more information on romance scams on http://www.romancescams.org/

I have been chatting with Staff Sergeant Jose Rivas, also met on OKCupid. Feeling stupid for falling for his sweet words. He has a new number 323-989-5540. He didn't outright ask for money, but stated that his paycheck was delayed and implied that he needed $$ for shipping costs for something he ordered. Jose Rivas also has a Facebook page. Could be fake too. Women beware!!

Has he text you again? If so what did he say when you confronted him? I'm actually texting with him now. He hasn't asked me for money but did ask for a pic of my daughter and I together. I started to think something was up when he sent me a picture on a pager email.

You're welcome, though all I did was point you to one document. If you study what consumer watchdogs have warned, you'll see the "romance scam" takes many forms.

I don't think you need to rule out service members, but develop an alertness to fraudulent dating site profiles and cheap come-on messages. All of the dating sites have a problem with phonies; some have a huge problem. Many site users can be self-deluded or else try to mask something which might hurt their hunting chances, but are mostly harmless. The dangerous types start gushing over you and rush into talk of meetings or marriage, then crank up the violins for a whole series of excuses as to why their stated plans for you are not working. If you hand over requested money, their *unspoken* plans for you *will* be working, and you will be reloaded with more dubious stories until you get wise or go broke.

My observation from the days when I frequented dating sites was that the Admin of sponsored sites, like OKC and PoF, tended to take fraud reports much more seriously than those with a paid subscriber model. There are two I won't mention, which have run national ad campaigns for years now, which I consider among the worst in policing bad actors. The pay sites also did little or nothing to prod people into using those sites *wisely*, which would include making profiles which say more of a person than "hi" and "looking".

I am replying to your post. I am the same person who replied to a post last night. The girl who is on the website trying to find love. I thank you very much for all your information you posted. It will help me a lot. I will be very careful on who I message now and it sure won't be any service men that have there profile on there. Thank you so much. You saved me from a lot of headache. So anyone replying to Jose Santos and he goes by JOSE Rivas okcupid dating website don't reply back to him because he is fake. Tried calling that number and nobody answers the phone. But to the above post I thank you very much for the information. God bless.

A caution from the US Army, excerpted:

Online Romance Scam Information

Army CID is warning anyone who is involved in online dating to proceed with caution when corresponding with persons claiming to be U.S. Soldiers currently serving in Afghanistan or elsewhere.

Army CID receives hundreds of allegations a month from victims who state they got involved in an online relationship with someone, on a legitimate dating website or other social media website, who claims to be a U.S. Soldier. The "Soldier" then begins asking for money for various false service-related needs such as transportation costs, communication fees, marriage, processing and medical fees. Victims of these online scams have lost tens of thousands of dollars, with a very low possibility of recovery.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

I would add that the fellas have been targeted for many years by similar fake daters, often posing in broken English as cute Russian girls hunting for a husband. No sane person advances from stranger to undying devotion sight unseen and across an ocean. These faux valentines all come whining about their endless chain of problems, which naturally only your money can cure.
