Just received a text from this number asking about a vehicle I'm selling.  Judging from the history, not legit.

I got an email from him as well. I'm a freelancer and (perhaps foolishly) thought he was legit, until he offered to send me twice my rate and asked that I forward the difference to his publisher. Not a chance!

The messages came from here, although I imagine he's using a stolen identity: DAVID CHRIS <davidomonk05@hotmail.com>. In his first message to me, he copied this individual: justinsmitty93@gmail.com

Here are his email messages:

What a weirdo. I got this same message from davidomonk05@hotmail.com. I told him to send me the money on PayPal if he wanted, but I didn't give him my address. I don't get it. Seems like it would be a waste of his time doing this. I'm not giving him anything! haha! Time-wasting weirdo...

So glad I checked here! I got this email this morning:

"Good day, I will like to know if you can write articles on the below hotels in florida

Avanti Resort

Regency Hotel Miami

Hilton Fort Lauderdale Marina

The Atlantic Hotel

b2 Miami Downtown

The articles will be 2500 words on each hotel. Please can you let me know the how much you will charge for this. Can the articles be ready within 30 days from the date you receive the payment?

   Thanks so much"

I sent an email asking him where he got my email address and explaining that my fees would need to cover the cost of those hotel stays (I'm in Florida, but not that part of Florida), and I haven't heard back yet, but now I know not to make any deals with him. It's a shame, really--I'd love this project if it were real.

It has come to our attention that there is a Scam Artist making his/her way around to some of our Vendors. We have limited information as to who this person is. He/She can be using a different name, email, and phone number each time, however, we do have one source of which he/she has used:

David Chris - Davidomonk05@hotmail.com -  323-425-9854

Unfortunately, some of our vendors have fallen victim of this scam. If anyone is calling you, and hiring you without even meeting you, be especially cautious. If they are asking you to deposit money ANYWHERE, or they are willing to deposit money into YOUR account, be extremely cautious. They are trying to get your banking information and will take your money at the first opportunity.

Scammers have their way with words. They know how to sweet talk their way into your pockets without you even realizing it. It is ALWAYS okay to be doubtful especially if you are talking with people you don't know personally.

David Chris found me on Party Pop. EXACT same approach of check arriving overnight.
His New Jersey party is in three weeks so I am not sure how this scam would have played out.
It's funny that none of these posts have an ENDING.
The overnight check promised never came and the quick acceptance of my work/price was what brought me to search him out.

I got the same email saying he found me on Guru.com. I was about to contract with him for translation services but he stopped replying when I said I would have to verify and validate his bank check so I asked him for the bank information.

I am just curious?.Did he send a check for more than the amount he supposedly owed? I'm guessing that's the type of scam he was going for.

Yes, I agree. I also just got an email from this guy: davidomonk05@hotmail.com. Also said he found me on Guru.com and stated he would send me $400 in advance for a translation job. I tried to check his IP address but nothing came up. then I realized there was another person copied on the email?a random person whom I didn't know at all. That was fishy. I am glad I read the post below. I plan to report him.

Thanks so much, I will pay you $350 for it in total, because I want you to do a good job and take ur time to do it and I want to make sure we deal directly to make it work fast. I prefer to let you have your payment first before you start the translation, the text has no picture or drawing. Only to translate it. Pls let me have ur name and address to send u a check for the payment today by UPS overnight delivery after you have the payment and you confirmed that the check has cleared, you can then start  with the translation. The translated text will be delivered on CD and Paper after completion.
Please let me have the below info to send the check to pls.
Name
Address
City

Zip code
Phone Number.

I will be waiting for the name and address pls. Once you confirm your payment, I will arrange it on one text for you.

I sent a reply saying that I saw his e-mail on this forum, that I felt uncomfortable accepting a check and that if he was serious about this translation I would need him to pay through PayPal. If he replies to my e-mail I'll post an update.

I read online that often a scammer sends you a check for more than what was agreed on and when you get the check, they ask that you send them back the extra amount.

Kayla I got the same message as well, and he stated he'd send me a check for $2500, 500 for me and 2000 for his publisher, who would come and pick up a CD of the poems he wanted written.  It's a hoax, found it on other sites, but truthfully just took the time to look.  I've been way to busy, and unfortunately I've given him my address.  Oh but he used the name James Reed.

I received the same message about being on guru and finding my name.  I never use guru, it's jut not worth it.  Same speech about sending me the money and giving it to his publisher when he comes to pick up the CD.  He's sent me a tracking number from UPS, and in fact just called me to see if I'd gotten the UPS check as of yet.  I don't plan on cashing it, but I'm thinking I shouldn't have given him my address, does anyone really show up?  I mean, I have protection if someone were to show up here, but I wouldn't want to have to hurt someone.
How did anyone else get out of this?
Thanks,

What does he gain? $2,000 This is a classic check-cashing scam.  Remember, he said "$2,000 to the editor when he picked up the CD."

You cash the check and take $2,000 out.  They guy comes, you give him $2,000.  Then, the bank tells you that the check bounced and YOU are out $2,000 bucks (the 'editor' has it).  The 'editor' is the scammer or one of his buddies...

It sounded suspicious so I decided to do a quick google search and found this site.  I'm not sure that this is a money scam but I was concerned that he wanted my address instead of offering to pay through paypal.

I don't think I'll be doing business with him.

Wow, dealing with this guy too. I'm glad I'm smart enough to doubt things. Said he found me on Guru (which, I should have known was scammy: I barely use Guru ever), would pay $200 total. It sounded only minimally sketchy until he mentioned a guy coming here, and deducting money from a check for him - wtf? I have no idea how this scam would work, but it's clearly fake. Don't deal with this guy, davidomonk05@hotmail.com. Total scam.

Oh, crap.  He emailed me with the same info.  Said he found me on guru.com, although I've never written for them.  He wanted me to write 24 poems for him.  I quoted $2,500 which he agreed to readily.  He said he'd be overnighting me a check for $4,500 and I was to give $2,000 to the editor when he picked up the CD of the poems.  I told him (in a phone conversation!) that I didn't see why the CD couldn't be delivered thru the mail.  He has my address, also!  What type of scam is this?  What does he possibly have to gain?

He emailed me saying he would pay me 500 bucks for my poetry and that he works for a university. He managed to get my phone number and address. He said he was going to mail me a check for 2000 and that I could deduct the amount for myself and pay the publisher the rest. He then stated that he would send me the number to track the package but hasn't heard back from him. I was so upset seeing as I actually wrote a lot and I did a damn good job haha oh well
