These people call from a lot of numbers in the 325 area code. They contacted me about my sister and said they got my cell phone number from another government agency. The only government agency that has my cell phone number is from the VA who services the needs of my disabled husband. ACT explained that they have access to all phone numbers provided to any government agency and through their investigation, they found we were related and began snooping into my private life using government records. ACT even called two of my neighbors and left messages for me to call them in order to harass us after I refused to release the name of the hospital where she is a patient. My sister has been in a mental institution for two years. We filed the proper paperwork with the Department of Education and they still "farm" out this loan every six months. We have hired an atty in order to have this loan dismissed due to a disability she will never recover from. ACT even wanted me to assume responsibility for her debt. This company is just awful. They will say and do anything. Do not talk to these people as you cannot trust anything they say.

If you are being harrassed or feel threatened by a student loan collection agency please read this:
"U.S. Department of Education Collection Agencies:
Each of the Department?s contracted collection agencies has set up a ?Special Assistance Unit? to address customer concerns. If your account is assigned to one of the contracted collection agencies, and you have concerns about their servicing of your account, the Department of Education requests that you call the Default Resolution Group call center at 1-800-621-3115. They will direct you to the correct Special Assistance Unit personnel."
The automated switchboard is a pain - very time consuming but be diligent - - - the people at this number can pull your debt from the problematic collection company. (They MAY also have the authority to make them quit calling you if you are not associated with the defaulted student loan.)
If they get enough complaints about a specific company they can and do fire that company. As a federal agency they are in a position to prosecute for not following the "Fair Debt Collection" laws.
