Debt Collector
I just received a call from 866-210-8130 they must be using a new number now. But before that call I received a call from 804-414-6489 stating someone had a claim against me and to call the 866# with the claim number she gave me - right away. This freaking ridiculous!!

I received a similar call. They have  a Florida exchange also. The call came from 863-808-5176. They said they were representing Global. They said Global was supposed to talk to me first to give the ok to release "information" to them. They gave reference number and a number for Global which is obviously not Global. The ppl that initially called was listed on my caller id as Voxee. She was rude and could not tell me what the litigation was for. Just an fyi for Florida residents.

So the mystery continues. Many calls today. Ok after searching around I find this page listing 336-283-0327 as Global. The number on my message says 866-369-2276. The caller ID says 859-904-2095. both numbers are unlisted or dont show up on a search. Another number of complaint for Global is 888-357-9195 which is also listed as a computer firm in Lexington called Resara. What in the world is going on. This definately is not a legit company.

Section 809 of the FDCPA http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre27.pdf requires 3rd-party debt collectors to give debtors written notice of debt (the key word is *shall*) :
"§ 809. Validation of debts
(a) Within five days after the initial communication with a consumer in connection with the collection of any debt, a debt collector shall, unless the following information is contained in the initial communication or the consumer has paid the debt, send the consumer a written notice containing?
(1) the amount of the debt;
(2) the name of the creditor to whom the debt is owed;
(3) a statement that unless the consumer, within thirty days after receipt of the notice, disputes the validity of the debt, or any portion thereof, the debt will be assumed to be valid by the debt collector;
(4) a statement that if the consumer notifies the debt collector in writing within the thirty-day period that the debt, or any portion thereof, is disputed, the debt collector will obtain verification of the debt or a copy of a judgment against the consumer and a copy of such verification or judgment will be mailed to the consumer by the debt collector; and
(5) a statement that, upon the consumer?s written request within the thirty-day period, the debt collector will provide the consumer with the name and address of the original creditor, if different from the current creditor."

A Collection Agent May Not?

Here are the top 11 actions prohibited by the The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act:

Misrepresent Him or Herself

  A debt collector may not misrepresent himself as an attorney or law enforcement officer.

Use the Telephone to Annoy or Harass

  A collection agent may not cause a telephone to ring or engage any person in telephone conversation repeatedly or continuously with an intent to annoy, abuse, or harass anyone at the called number.

Threaten Arrest or Lawsuit

  A collection agent may not threaten a consumer with arrest. It may not threaten legal action that is either not permitted or not actually contemplated. In other words, a the threat of a lawsuit may be an empty one.

Use Abusive or Threatening Language

  A debt collector may no use abusive or profane language in the course of communication related to the debt.

Publish a Bad Debt List

  Publishing the consumer?s name or address on a "bad debt" list is prohibited.

Contact By Embarrassing Media

  A debt collector may not communicate with a consumer by post card. It may not use any language or symbol, other than the debt collector?s address, on any envelope when communicating with a consumer by use of the mails or by telegram. A debt collector may use its business name if such name does not indicate it is in the debt collection business.

Contact a Consumer at Work

  A collection agent may not communicate with consumers at their place of employment after being told this is unacceptable or prohibited by the employer.

Seek Unjustifiable Amounts

  A debt collector may not demand any amounts not permitted under an applicable contract or as provided under law.

Contact a Consumer Represented by an Attorney

  A collection agent may not contact a consumer after it learns the consumer is represented by a lawyer.

Communicate With a Consumer After Receiving a Validation Request

  If a consumer sends a written §1692g response within 30 days, the collection agent may not communicate with the consumer until it mails the consumer the requested verification of original creditor's name and address.

Communicate With Third Parties

  A debt collector may not reveal or discuss the nature of a consumer?s debts with third parties other than the consumer?s spouse or attorney. A collection agent may contact neighbors or co-workers only to obtain location information. It may contact a third party again if it has reason to believe the information the party provided previously is false.

Bills.com FDCPA FAQ

Below are questions Bills.com readers ask frequently:

Can a Collection Agent Call My Cell Phone?

  Yes. However, if you tell the debt collector it may not use that number because it is a cell phone, it may not contact you again at that number.

I Keep Receiving Dozens of Calls From Collection Agents. Is That Legal?

  No. Unscrupulous collection agents will use "block parties" or "office parties" where they contact a consumer, multiple neighbors, or co-workers telling them they need to reach the consumer on an urgent matter. This is not permitted under the FDCPA.

A Collector Says I Will Be Arrested if I Do Not Pay

  This was a true statement before the US Civil War, but has not been true since. People may be arrested if an aggressive judge files a bench warrant for a person who does not appear at a hearing relating to a lawsuit regarding a debt. However, in that case, the offense is the failure to respond to a court order, and not the existence of the debt. As stated above, it is illegal under the FDCPA to threaten a consumer with arrest if the consumer does not pay the debt.

Yes - they called my employer and said they were filing a claim against me.  The guy calling gave a different number as he is a "locator".  Then he gave Global's number so I can contact them with a "change of address.".   IT IS A HUGE SCAM!  Please see story on KHOU.com and Huffington Post...

[Allison Currie, Houston Woman, Says Debt Collector Threatened Her Deceased Sister
The Huffington Post  |  By Harry Bradford Posted: 02/21/2013 6:03 pm EST  |  Updated: 02/22/2013 1:49 pm EST]

A Houston woman has called a debt collector ?cruel? and ?despicable? after the collector threatened her sister. Her sister, she says, died back in 2005 at the age of 18.

A caller claiming to be a representative from the civil litigation unit of a company called Global Litigation Group left a threatening message on the voice mail belonging Allison Currie, KHOU 11 reports. The rep demanded that Currie's late sister appear in court -- but when Currie called back, no one picked up.

"They were trying to pressure me into thinking that I needed to contact a lawyer and contact them," Currie told KTRK.

When KHOU tried to hunt down the company, the news outlet was unable to find any records of it, and there was no evidence that the collector in question had any ties to companies with similar-sounding names.

Stories like Currie?s have been altogether too common in recent years, with threats and schemes from debt collectors ranging from instances of impersonation to outright insults. In 2011, the Federal Trade Commission received more complaints related to debt collectors than any other industry.

But things may be changing, however slightly. Starting this year, the newly formed Consumer Financial Protection Bureau will be providing oversight of 175 of the larger debt collection agencies, The Huffington Post reports. There are 4,500 collection firms in the U.S.

As evidenced by Currie?s story, robocalls and threatening messages are still occurring -- sometimes for debts that may not be real. Other examples of debt collection abuse have occurred recently in Connecticut and New Jersey.

Same situation but they called my place of employment and stated that if I didn't call them in 3 hours I would be served papers at my place of business.  Just calling my place of employment in CA is illegal and any real business would know this.  They too will state they are calling from Professional Document Services, McNaulty & Associates, and a few other I am sure.  I had some investigating done and it all points to FRAUD.
Please also be advised that they will try to insist that you have to pay then over the phone, they want all your information so they can rip you off, ask them if the calls are being recorded and see what they say, then before you say anything tell them that YOU are recording the conversation so that you can turn into BBB, Attorney General, and your attorney.  They will hang up right away.

I got a voice mail on my home phone from the same source. It was about a civil blah blah blah... restraining order on my brother, who doesn't live here, has never traveled to anywhere near that area code, and is not the type to give anyone reason for a restraining order! What really struck me about this is that even if this were legitimate, it wouldn't hold up in court! If you are being sued, you must be served with due process. This is when a process server delivers paperwork IN PERSON to you or a family member. You cannot be served over the phone, especially if they never reached a living being, only a voicemail box. It is a scam! I'm glad I checked on here before bothering my brother about it!
