Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans

Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010  FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691

The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.

According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.

The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim?s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims? relatives, friends, and employers.

SPAM!! Don't respond. I received an email this morning and double checked the phone number in the case it was possibly real. Any legal correspondence will be sent to you via email, that was my first clue. I always double check numbers since there are so many spammers out there. Once I got to this site, noticed the account number and amount owed is EXACTLY the same as multiple people who have posted. These people are complete dirt bags and they do what they can to frighten you into giving money that isn't owed to them. How these people sleep at night, I don't know. Reporting them right away.

No, you shouldn't worry.  Email is not a valid means of "serving" you.  And you only have to look at the atrocious use of the English language to know that these are emailed by foreign extortionist scammers.  Please do forward the email to the FBI at their Internet Crime Complaint Center - www.ic3.gov.  Meanwhile, do not respond to the email(s), do not call any numbers in the emails, and do not open any attachments - they may have malware/spyware/all manner of viruses attached.

For future reference, per the FDCPA, you should not pay any caller (or emailer) unless they mail proof of debt/proof they can legally collect said debt.  Refusal to mail this documentation - do not accept email or fax - is a violation of federal law.  If you did have payday loans which were not paid, you would get letters in the mail about them.  If you kept your paperwork, you can look back and check to make sure you did pay these off.  Or call the payday lender to check.  Bottom line - NEVER pay anyone just because they say you owe - make sure that debt is legitimately owed to that debt collector.

I received the same email today, and I called the number and got through, it was a middle eastern speaking man. I had informed him that I had contacted the DOJ and my local police department, and they have filed a report and will check on the originating IP address. If you receive the same emails again. file a complaint with the DOJ and your local police department, and reply to their email and let them know that you have filed a complaint.

I just received the same exact email with the same exact information as the ones listed above.  I did get a loan over 3 years ago from Ace, received a phone call from an American woman who was with a collection company, scared me to death and paid her 500$.  Then after 2 years of receiving harassing phone calls, which normally I would look the numbers up on this site or my attorney would tell me they were a fradulent company, I received a letter from the real Ace Cash saying I had not paid my loan.  After fighting with them for a year, I settled with them because the 500$ I paid apparently was not to them.  So, I paid this twice, and now they are back again.  Thanks for this site!
