I just received an email from Shelly Hunter with the exact verbage. I just emailed her back today asking if she had other properties that I could look at since her email address said hunter-properties.net as well as if she could tell me the distance the property is located from the city of Las Vegas. Waiting for her reply. I have been flagging the listings on craigslist as prohibited. I kind of figured these listings weren't real since they didn't leave any real contact information about the property listings.

Got the exact same message about a condo in SF.  I mistakenly got my credit report, but canceled the service immediately after. Upon figuring out this was a legitimate scam, I've filed complaints with IC3 and FTC as well as getting fraud alert put on all of my accounts through equifax's official site.  Will also be making sure my bank stays up to date with my situation as well.

Notice, when the link is clicked it goes through a series of redirects, one of which I noticed was a site that specializes in affiliate marketing....

Sad how people have to do this to earn money...

I also got the exact same message from Shelly Hunter on 8/17/2010 regarding a Craigslist ad for a rental home in Belmont, CA.  Hunter Properties has a website (only you can't get past the main page; silly me, I thought it was just my work computer not having flash installed), so I thought it seemed legit.  I signed up for the credit report.  A few hours after completing/printing the report, my inbox was flooded with emails about all the credit servies I supposedly signed up for; the emails say if I don't cancel all the misc reports within the next few days, I'll be charged $29.95 monthly for each service!

Got the exact sam eemail from Shelly Hunter at hunter-properties.net...stating word for word about a rental apartment that I found on Craigslist in San Francisco.

COPY:

Hello,

I'm sorry I wasn't able to get back to you sooner! Things have been so hectic for me these last couple of days!

The good news is that the rental is still available! We had an offer from the first person we showed it to, but now it appears that they are changing their mind, so we need to start showing it again as soon as possible. You were the second one to email me about it.

It is the whole place that is for rent, and it's in pristine condition. We know a lot of prospective renters want to do a quick look of the property, but my husband doesn't want me to mass send out the address as a measure of safety. Last time we did that without verifying people, the empty property was broken into and vandalized. We don't want that to happen again! I CAN tell you that it's a very special property, that would normally rent for quite a bit more than other comparable properties in the neighborhood.

All utilities are connected and will be transferred into your name. You will be responsible for cable, internet, and phone, if you decide to have these services. Just to confirm, we DO allow pets at this property. The rental term is 12-month lease, but can be switched into a 6-month lease if preferred. We just ask that you give us fair notice if you are moving out.

If you would like to set up an appointment, go to the link below and request the free copy of your rental / credit report. We use this company for all the properties we manage. Just fill out the form and indicate that you want the free credit report. The actual scores on the report aren't important to us, it's more of a formality to have it on file, to make sure you are who you say you are.

Get your report here: http://leasing-reports.com/property10092/

Remember, we only need to see the page about the rental history. That will be all you will need to bring with you to the showing.

As far as getting together to see the property goes, I am available to show it any time from 10:00 am on, for the next couple of days. Let me know when you've printed out your credit report, and we will set up a time to do your walk-through.

Thank you once again for your interest!

Just got the EXACT same word-for-word response to a craigslist ad from Shelly.Hunter@Hunter-Properties.net with the link to equifax. I called Equifax and they said they get a lot of subscribers to their services through this code and there is no way for me to report it to anyone in equifax. She mentioned that people do get commissions for enrolling people into their program. She was quite fine to not have this unethical, dishonest business practice. Seems like they have it justified - people need to be protecting their identity and the greater percentage of people will stay enrolled through this method anyway.... what's the harm. THE HARM IS IT IS FRAUDULENT, LYING & UNETHICAL.

I had the same thing happen to me. Not sure who to report it to since Joanne Miller couldn't possibly be her real name. I replyed to an ad on craigslist for a rental property and received this exact email....a few days later my husband replyed to a completely different ad and also received the same exact email from a Shelly Hunter. For all we know it might not even be a woman. Could be a man posing as a woman because people tend to believe a woman especially if she mentions her husband who is looking out for her......all lies. So who do we report this to? I feel like I don't have any real info to give....but I really want them caught, so they don't actually scam people into giving them credit report info. FTC? Attorney general? FBI? Or do I just send "Joanne Miller" an email saying I know who you are and what you're doing, and I've reported you to the proper authorities...you thieving SOB!

I e-mail my resume applying for a job from an ad on Craigslist, and an email from Barbara Collins asking me to call this number 347-828-7938, for phone interview. I look it up because the email sound like a scam:

Thank you for your interest in our position.  I tried reaching you at the phone number you provided but was unable to get through.  I didn't leave a message because I had to send you an email explaining our hiring process.  The reason I was calling was to conduct a phone interview; basically it is the first step we take before asking candidates for an in person interview.  I need you take a moment to call me back so that we can procede with the phone interview and if all goes well setup an in person interview.  Before you call, please make sure you have the following documentation at hand:

1)  Your current resume detaling previous experience
2)  References; at least 1 (Name and phone number)
3)  Recent credit score (We are a collection agency and we use this number because the clients we work with require this information from our employees)

Please have these documents ready prior to calling for the phone interview.  You will need your most recent credit score (not older than a week);  Our company has negotiated with our partner to offer our applicants a Free Credit Score.  Please visit the site below to get your free score, make sure you write down your credit score number:

http://www.freescoredirect.info/goto.php?d=16&m=2&y=2010

Note: Please do not forward or attach your credit report. We only need the score, should be a 3 digit number (ex. 680).  Once you get this information call me at 347-828-7938.  Please be aware that we may ask you to bring in a copy of  your credit report on the day of your interview.

Thank you

Since they are referring you to one of those Free credit report sites that require you sign up for credit monitoring services - YES - I would say it was a scam.

From the sounds of it - there is no job at all - just a way to get you to sign up for credit monitoring services for a monthly fee.

REPORT THESE TO THE FTC AND YOUR STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL ASAP!

THIS IS WHERE YOU WANT TO GO www.annualcreditreport.com.

This is THE OFFICIAL YEARLY FREE CREDIT REPORT SITE!

If you have already pulled your yearly free report - you will have to pay for it again as well as you FICO score - but at least its not some scam website like they are referring you to in this bogus job email!

Identity Thieves Prowling for Job Seekers
Fake job ads up 345% as recession creates opportunities for scam artists
http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2009/03/job_scams.html

March 9, 2009

With the unemployment rate rising and living costs going up, more people are looking for new jobs or second jobs. These are ideal conditions, it turns out, if youâ??re an identity thief.

Job seekers will register with employment agencies, check employment ads, mail out unsolicited resumes, network, post resumes on job search sites and search Craigslist.

In fact, the UK Association for Payment Clearing Services which tracks the prevalence of fake job ads said that fake ads are up 345 percent over the past three years. Unfortunately identity thieves are taking advantage of these uncertain economic times to scam job seekers and gather personal identifying information.
The Identity Theft Resource Center offers these tips:

? Protect your Social Security Number by limiting how many people see it. Never put your SSN on a resume. Let a company ask for it when they consider you a serious applicant. To minimize your risk, you also may want to not list your home address and just put your city and state on the resume.

? Consider opening a separate email account for your job search and keeping your primary email address private. Placing your email address on a resume could open the door to spam and phishing, account verification, and other email scams. (The recent Monster.com breach exposed resumes and email addresses. If you had placed your Social Security number or home email address on your resume, you could have made yourself a target.)

? Check out a company you found on a website carefully before giving them your information, for example Craigâ??s List. Anyone can create a website, but it doesnâ??t mean that they are a real company. You can find information on a company through the Better Business Bureau or the State Attorney General where the company is located. You can also Google the business to find out more about them. Most reputable companies will have a significant presence on the Internet, not just a few mentions.

? Avoid any website that requires you to â??pre-registerâ? with your SSN, home address or driverâ??s license number. Also, you should not be required to prepay to view job listings. Both these requirements are strong indicators of a scam.

? Update your computer security prior to emailing resumes and receiving email correspondence. Making sure your computer security is currently updated against viruses, Trojans, and other types of computer malware can help to protect you from any intrusion in an attachment you might receive.

? Make sure the person who contacted you actually works at the listed company and is not someone who has posted a job pretending to be part of a company. Does the URL address include the name of the company? If not, who actually sent it? Call the company involved, and ask for the Human Resources Department. Some companies recommend not responding via email to any person asking for more information, but rather to call the company directly. Rarely does a company hire someone sight unseen.

? Be wary of some common job scams. Avoid any company, especially a foreign company that wants to hire you as a â??payment representative â??orâ? accounts receivable clerk.â? This scam indicates that you get to keep a percentage of all checks or money orders you place in a bank account for them.

Do not open a bank account for a company.

You will be the responsible party should any money laundering occur, or if checks bounce. This is called a â??money mule scam.â?

Another scam is to notify you that you are one of the finalists for a job, and they need your Social Security number to do a background check.

If you have not had a face-to-face interview with the company, you should be very skeptical.

No one gets a job based on a resume alone.
Finally, watch out for the â??work-at homeâ? scams, especially those that ask you to â??forwardâ? packages you receive to a third party. That package may contain stolen goods or illegal drugs. There is rarely need to have a private party as a â??freight forwarder.â?

The safest ways to job search are to use local want ads, visit the unemployment office, use temp employment services, tell friends and family about your search, and network via professional groups and business acquaintances. When contacting a local company you can meet them, see the facilities, and ask acquaintances in that industry about their reputation. Consider not contacting foreign companies, especially those from Nigeria, Russia and third world countries.

Should you decide to use the Internet, ITRC strongly recommends that you read the safety tips on job seeking websites and report any suspicious posting to the website concerned.

I received the same e.mail from Barbara Collins
