Survey
It's the United Public Opinion Group. I got this call 2 days ago, went through the motions and got transferred to a live operator after answering 10 general questions about myself. I gave her my name, phone number and address, and she said I'd be contacted within 72 hours about my free boarding passes. I got transferred back to the automated message, which told me to go to surveycruise.com and enter my information to get registered. I did so, and it seemed to have worked. Today I got a call from (800) 446-1524, looked it up and it was the same people. However, I researched after the first call and saw it was a scam (they ask for your credit card information apparently, and people never get their boarding passes), so I ignored it.

Got a call from this number - started off with a ship fog horn.  If you have time to mess with these callers, keep them on the line as long as possible, give them bogus information, and waste as much of their time as possible and keep stringing them along.  Just don't give them any personal information of yourself or anyone else.  If they want to mail you something, make up some address and in some bogus town.  Hopefully they won't bother you again.  Also got a call from another number probably from the same location - 360 460 2196.

Hope you didn't give them your mother's maiden name. I always use a fake one when "required" for security verification - thanks to the internet and places like geneaology.com, it's disturbingly easy to actually acquire one's mother's true maiden name. (Especially if your mother is not all that privacy savvy, but uses facebook. If you are listed as "family" and so are her brothers or you are friends with your cousins, it's pretty dang easy to get that tidbit of info.)

Couple that with people's unthinking tendency to also supply their true birthdates online, and you have three essential pieces of information needed to get into all kinds of financial records. (Name, birthday, and mother's maiden name.)

Don't use your real name online, don't give out your birthday (pick one you like), and for god's sake don't give out your mother's actual maiden name. For years now, my "mother" has been Barbie Millicent Roberts and my "father" is Kenneth Carson - the ever popular Barbie and Ken. I'm open to new siblings, so if you like that idea, feel free to use it yourself. Other times I have used Brenda Franklin, Sadie Hawkins, Joanna Ark (LOL), etc.

Another thing you can do - when forced to give a phone number for loyalty cards, use an old phone number, your locker combination, or the local graveyard's number. We use the "Jenny" number with our area code when we can get away with it, and an old fax line when they won't take 867-5309. These people aren't actually going to CALL you about your Panera points (although who knows they might sell it to robot callers), so why give them real numbers? Just use a 10 digit string you can remember.

Google voice will give you a number you can use in conjunction with your cell phone, so if you are getting live people calling you, ask what number they are using. If you find out it's your Google voice number, you can just flush it without going through the hassle of actually acquiring a new phone number.

Received a call on my cell phone with a recorded  message with the most horrible background echoing racket I've heard.  It was an automated message offering 2 free cruise tickets for participating in a short survey.  The sound quality was so awful that it was interesting to listen to-  for a very short time.  I text the # back and said "f off"

I have gotten two calls from these people on my business cell phone. I've recently been at a trade show and have been getting a lot of calls from new vendors, so it's really frustrating that these schmucks are also calling. I answer and it just hangs up, and when I try to call back it just shows as busy.

Have a blackberry so I'll block them, but I wish they wouldn't have wasted my time at all. Googling the number brought me right to this site.

Called me @ 6:40 P.M. CT.  Did not know number.  Blocked my # and called back.  Weird background noise that is hard to make out.  I assume it's a robocall and/or telemarketer.  Although I do have some trash that I know who are from Washington state, did not recognize number.  Added to blocked callers.

They called me and I picked up. Crazy background noise. Looked up the area code and it's from Washington, which reminds me of the two missed calls I got on the 17th (206-462-1797) also from Washington. I think they are probably from the same source.

I just got the same number, I ignored it because I recognized the area code from back home. They didn't leave a message so I googled it and this site came up with all these complaints. Ugh! I get text messages about cruises too so I'm sure its related. They're all telemarketing scams. I just hate that they're from Washington becuase it always freaks me out because I wonder if its my ex trying to get at me again! O'well.
