It?s yet another scam and once again, if I don?t recognize the number I don?t pick up the caller has no option to leave a message because the answering system has been shut down.  After 4-5 rings the phone stops and after a few days the calls stop altogether.

If the caller perceives in anyway that the number is good, they keep calling or share the number with other telemarketers; this issue is too big for the FCC to handle.  As others have said we need to take back our lives and if it means screening calls, then so be it.

November 6th, 2013 at 7:07pm.  Allowed this call to go to voicemail.  Transcript of recorded message:

(first few words cut off) "...to the following message.  If you or a family member are 60 years old or older, you now qualify under the new National Senior Assistance Program to receive $3000 in free grocery savings certificates that can be used at over 100 grocery chains across the US.  In addition to your $3000 in savings certificates, you will receive a free emergency medical alert bracelet or necklace.  This medical alert device is designed to save your life if you ever experience a fall or any other emergency.  Press 1 now to speak to a representative and have your $3000 savings certificate mailed directly to you and learn more about this risk-free offer.  Again, press 1 now for more information or press 5 to be removed from this opt-in list."

Total length: 57 seconds.

I don't give my phone number to anyone and I especially don't opt-in to anything.  Additionally, there aren't even any seniors in my household.

12/18 17:18 PST  Another NOMOROBO success.  Didn't have to use call blocker.  Obviously picked up nomorobo and only rang once on my end.   Since I didn't have to answer and call didn't get to voicemail, can't definitely say this was a telemarketing call, but would guess it probably was.

The robo-call left the following message:

?For those sixty years old or older. You now qualify under the new National Senior Assistance Program to receive three thousand dollars in free groceries savings certificates. They can be used at over a hundred major grocery chains across the US. In addition to your three thousand dollars in savings certificate you'll receive a free emergency medical alert bracelet or necklace. This medical alert device is designed to save your life if you ever experience a fall or any other emergencies.?

The recorded message then requests that the receiver press 1 or 5 to accept or deny the free offer, in the very same fashion as the original medical alert phishing scam. It is not apparent at this time what personal information this updated version requests, but as the National Senior Assistance Program does not appear to be a real organization, consumers are advised to hang up the phone.

This is a scam so don't answer the call and don't press any numbers on your keypad.  Ideally you should buy a cordless phone with call blocking technology.  My Panasonic can hold up to 250 numbers that will prevent those numbers entered from ringing through.  Makes life at home and esp. around dinnertime more peaceful.

Illegal robocaller violating Do Not Call law.
Called number registered on the Do Not Call list, robocall without previously given permission.

Call targetted at "seniors" implying that this is some sort of "national" benefit that you "qualify" for "if you are 60", as if it's a government program, and using the lure of "$3000 in grocery vouchers" as part of the scam.  Partly riding on the hype over "national healthcare", as if this is "another government health benefit".

To be effective, they would probably have to get some identity information, and use that to intimidate payments for some "medical alert service", so it would have to become a phone extortion racket using harassment to actually pay off.  That was the pattern of a similar scam shut down by FTC.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/personalf ... -alert/2397189/
"...
One Plymouth retiree said his wife got the first call in March after going to an emergency room with a dislocated shoulder. When she got the first computerized call, she pressed one of the numbers to talk to a live person who then firmly insisted she had to accept shipment of the medical alert device because it was ordered for her. When she asked who ordered it, the person said he was not at the liberty to say who ordered it.

The retiree promptly hung up when the man then asked for her address. But the Plymouth couple said the calls keep coming fairly regularly.

Some computerized calls can claim they're associated with an insurance company or another well-known name. Some scams even claim that free services come through Medicare, which is not the case at all.

The Federal Trade Commission took action in March against Instant Response Systems, based on charges of violating telemarketing rules and violations of the unordered merchandise statute. Instant Response Systems is based in Brooklyn, N.Y., and also does business as Medical Alert Services. The FTC said in that case telemarketers would claim the monitoring is free but consumers would have to pay $817 to $1,602 for the service. Payment plans were supposedly dependent on a consumer's financial situation.

In many cases, the FTC said, Instant Response Systems sent letters, bogus invoices and even threatened elderly consumers who did not order the product and claimed that the consumer owed money for it. In some cases, consumers were sent medical alert pendants that they did not order. An FTC complaint is not a finding or ruling that the defendant has actually violated the law. The case will be decided by the court.
..."

Basically another attempt to con and extort the elderly..

I'm so sick of these idiots! I just Click Click but they keep bugging us. They called back to back on 11/19/13 @ 5:44 & 5:45 PM CT. The call from N.Y. was a Senior Scam & from what I'm reading here, it's yet ANOTHER B.S. phony line as the previous #'s I get too many times. Be it from Chicago/Washington/California/Oregon or where ever. HOW DO THESE JERKS get away with it?! This is getting ridiculou$. We're Unlisted & the DNC is a waste. I've tried notifying the FCC but it does no good. As soon as they're found they set up shop somewhere else in other States. VERY annoying.

I AM DOWN TO ONLY A FEW CALLS A WEEK. How does that sound!!!

"YOU ARE A TELEMARKETER, AND I DON'T DO BUSINESS WITH ANY COMPANY THAT USES TELEMARKETING AS A FORM OF ADVERTISING" (stolen from a comment on this web site -- I love it).  And do not answer name unavailable ever as calls are now starting to say that often.  Another comment from this web site says: When you press the number to have your number removed, all you do is confirm that your number is a working one.  Now I either block the numbers or I don't answer the phone at all.  Another comment was:  They sold your known active number to another scammer!!!  That is what they do when you call them back to opt out.  SO DON?T HAVE YOUR NUMBER REMOVED!

Let me explain my idea of ROBO CALLS. Each area code has 9,999,999 numbers fyi (7 digits). The program starts calling every number that it can in succession.  So they don't need to buy or obtain lists from anyone.  I am going to copy and paste and post this info for each number that calls me for this web site (9,999,98 numbers more to copy and paste to)

NOTHING IS GOING TO STOP THESE SCAMMERS AND LAZY COLLECTION AGENCIES (statute of limitations on debt:  http://www.creditinfocenter.com/rebuild/statuteLimitations.shtml)  who call everyone with the same name instead of looking up the right one and all we can do is block them or use call forward selective..  DNC does not work when they are robo dialing all possible random numbers. The authorities can not or will not help either.

So, just block them, DON'T ANSWER UNKNOWN CALLS, and continue using this great site for information to be in control of your own home and cell phone calls.  If it turns out that you did not answer a call from someone you know (number not on this site), just call them back.  No problem.  It?s a lot of work that I do (checking the number on this web site, blocking the caller,  but at least I FEEL like I have a little control of the situation. Maybe I'm delusional.  Another smart person on this web site said to save it to your contacts as spam 1, then spam 2, etc. so you can just ignore the call.

ITS OUR LIFE AND WE NEED TO TAKE IT BACK.
One person said to call forward selective to the FCC whose number is 1-717-338-2533

The Center for Investigative Reporting joined two news organizations in an investigation of groups that use telemarketers to raise money and what they found is that most of the money is paid to telemarketers, leaving the charities with little, if anything. (3%)

Not only that but reputable charitable organizations don't solicit donations by phone.

So it's good advice to remember to just say no to anyone who solicits over the phone unless you actually know the person calling.

                                                                                        DEBT COLLECTORS
This was posted on this web site:

The Fair Debt Collection Act (FDCPA) was put into place To give people legal rights when it comes to collection agencies and collection attorneys.  If this collection agency is calling you for a debt you owe or a debt that is not yours, they could be violating your rights.

IF YOU ARE BEING CONTACTED BY ANY COLLECTION AGENCY,  get in contact with         http://www.fdcpacompliance.com/           asap so they can determine what rights these bottom feeders have violated and take action.   More and more American?s find themselves being hounded by debt collectors as a result of our country?s recent economic downturn.  The good news is that harassment is an illegal act according to the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA).  The great news is that each infraction is PUNISHABLE UP TO $1,000.00 TO THE CONSUMER for statutory damages, and possibly more for actual damages!  The offending agency also has to pay your attorney?s fees.  The only thing that the consumer generally has to do is help to gather and provide information.
