Scam alert!

We just got 2 calls in 2 days from them so I looked up the number. On another site it said:

"Just called us too, it's scam! The firefighters and police DO NOT call asking for money!!!! If you get a call like this please call the police department and report this, it happens a lot in Washington state, these thief's steal tons of money primary from elderly, they need to be stopped!'

The message they left on our voice mail said it was the THR Group calling for the Wa State Firefighter's Association spring fundraiser. (www .thethrgroup.com was the site they mentioned)

I dont believe they are legit but even if it was a legit fundraising for firefighters they take off a percentage (often times quite large) of money donated for their 'fee' so it is always best to give to any charity directly so ALL proceeds go the where they should and not to scammers.

It's an unpublished cell phone from Olympia, WA. They've called my house a few times this past week. No message is ever left.

I got at least 4 calls this week from this same number, they don't leave a message , so I don't answer. It is a cell-phone prefix, probably a scam if You read the other comments here

I answered the phone only to hear someone breathing on the other end. As I always do, I blocked the number after looking it up online. We live in Olympia and that definitely looks like a cell number as it is not a regular landline prefix around here.

Fell into the trap of answering this call as I thought it was someone from work calling. They wanted donations tothe volunteer firefighters. I told them that we contribute enough in taxes to the fire district and also FD 3 just got a 13 or 15% pay raise so maybe they could donate some of that windfall to the volunteer fire workers. He didn't know about that payraise so that tells me that he wasn't from here.

Yep, we did too.  Sounds like BS to me.  How is it calls like this come in when you have registered on the do not call list?  Oh well, we can block them on our phone anyway.

Someone called and wanted to speak to my husband...called him by his nickname.  The call was on4/6/2010 around noon.I usually do not answer unless I know the caller, but my kids have cell phones and since the call was on a cellphone, I thought it might be one of them...it wasn't.

Got a call from IVR at this 360-870-4124 on 4/5/2010.  IVR is Interactive Voice Response, and none of those in this list named them.  I suggest they morph from one scam to another.  TC TG

I just got a call from this number but my Caller ID identified it as coming from a cell phone using the Verizon network originating in Olympia.  There was no voice mail left

Figure these scammers will call back.  They always do.

I also have received calls from this number but no one answers when I say Hello several times. I initially thought it was one of my friends from Olympia, but turned out not to be the case.

One thing about some scam calls, is I have received calls from the prisons when they used (not sure if they do this) to hire out inmates under contract labor to telemarketing companies. The prisoners would get detailed demographic and personal information lists on who they would be calling and for awhile, they were targeting single women, trying to get a "friend" on the outside so when they were released, they could exploit her in some way.  It really made no sense to give a prisoner this kind of job, when they were serving time for murder, rape, armed robbery, or any other assorted offenses that opportunists are prone to commit.

Another thing is that this person calling might be checking to see if anyone is home or not, alot of burgularies in my area lately.  It is not hard to find phone numbers of specific residents with the internet records now.

Thank goodness for Caller ID. To not answer unless you recognize the number is good advice. I usually don't answer it and let my answering machine pick it up.  If it is important enough, the caller will leave a message, otherwise, I forget about it.

Just got a call from this number.  My caller ID only showed Olympia, WA.  If I do not recognize the number, I do not answer.  It is too bad that in today's economy some people choose to still prey upon the elderly in our society using such scam tactics.  Be aware, be informed, and remember you can report scams to DFI (Dept of Financial Institutions) and the AG's (Attorney General's) Office.  One person following through can save a lot of people the heartbreak of being scammed.

Recieved a call from this number almost daily sometimes multiple times a day. I finally answered.
Claiming to be a reresentative in Olympia, Wa. Collecting donations for volunteer firefighters all over Washington State. Started off with a long spiel about changing my smoke detectors. After that he went on to tell me he was collecting donations for voluteer firefighters and how soe of the money went to a student from various schoools so that student could become a volunteer firefighter. Um... ok. He then said something about gold, bronze and silver awards? I imagine it was a donation level but he did not state the amount for each level. But if I chose one he would send me information in themail.  I told him I could not make that decision. He said ok then how about a $15.00 donation? That way he could still send the information. Hmmm... how about just send some information.  At any rate, I thought it sounded fishy. I called the Marysville fire department, since he thought I lived there. (He had my last name wrong, fine with me.) They do not recive any donations from anyone of that nature. Scam, not sure, but sure sounded odd to me. I would suggest always do your research before donating any money over the phone.
