It's a scam and you shouldn't reply in any way. If you live in the NYC area, watch the 11pm news on WCBS (ch 2) on Monday 6/12/12.  Consumer Reporter Asa Arons will have a report on the scam.  I personally don't know what it's about since I don't have texting on my phone, but I'll upload the report on YouTube.

I got the same one from Sara.  I had never received that kind of message before where it's not quite an email or a text message.  Definitely don't click (a message brought to you by Captain Obvious) :)

My husband just got one too and I spent a few minutes (that I will never get back) trying to figure out who this was.  It's not that I don't trust him, but it's a little suspicious since it's his company BB and he has plenty of contacts out of state!  I too am glad I googled the number before interrogating him : )

I received the same message too from "Sara" I googled it and found this and other  threads like it. I called my carrier and reported and it is a total scam. they blocked the number and indicated it was happening to others and only those with Blackberrys. Somehow out personal numbers were obtained and that it was attached to a Blackberry and it is a way to SCAM on us. Do not reply, call or anything else. Call your carrier and reportit and have th enumber blocked. The more reports they receive the more they will to investigate the breach of personal information.

I just got the exact same spam message today...Booo! What are they trying to accomplish?  Of course I did not reply.  Sometimes with this kind of fishing, when you reply they know it's a real phone number and then they sell it to advertisers. Just delete!

Hey, Gary:

I really enjoved your post. It gave me the first good laugh I've had all day. That more than made up for the time I wasted trying to figure out who the hell this "Sara" was. (In fact, it ALMOST made up for all of the self-doubt I put myself through by wondering whether I really DID know someone named Sara - but had forgotten her last name and forgotten a promise to call her back because I was getting prematurely senile ;-)

I sincerely doubt "Sara" was the same person you say you met last night - unless you somehow managed to make somebody SO angry that she decided to wreak revenge not only on you - but on dozens of us innocent bystanders all over the country as well. Thanks for NOTHING, man! (Just kiddng.)

I got the same message, from "Sara," saying, "hey, are you going to call or what? 401-441-5929." The message was in red-colored text, suggesting it was urgent. I googled the area code and prefix, which said it was in Cranston, RI. I don't know anyone there, and I don't onow anyone by the name of "Sara." I sent her a polite text reply telling her I didn't recognize her first name, asking if she could give me a little more background to help me remember what it was about, etc. After I sent my reply, my BlackBerry made a xylophone-like noise and the words "Message Status: Transaction error - unknown service" appeared. That suggests to me that my reply "bounced."

Who, exactly, is this "Sara," what does she supposedly want, and (if it is in fact a scam) what does she (or whoever sent the message) really want? Is there anything I need to do to protect my BlackBerry from some kind of virus, or attempt to copy or steal information I've saved on there?

WHY, for heaven's sake, do people DO things like this?? If it's a scam - and it's taken up at least several minutes of the time of every person on this thread - it's a major nuisance when all those minutes, spent by each of us, are added up. Kind of reminds me of an old MAD Magazine article that showed readers how to "get back" at a government bureaucracy by making some kind of very elaborate (but meaningless) inquiry or request to dozens of its employees, who would then supposedly end up calling each other to figure out what it was all about. The article ended urged readers to continue with the scheme until "everyone [i.e., every single bureaucrat] is involved in this FUN GAME" [capitals in original]. When I was nine years old, I thought the article and it suggestions to be incredibly sophisticated as well as hysterically funny - but somehow, I'm not laughing NOW... :-(
