My caller id displayed a number very close to my number and I called it back! To my surprise someone answered and the number belongs to an actual person.
It looks like those scammers are using those apps to mask telephone numbers!!

We've been getting these calls for months. Every week or two, they make a new round of calls from a new phone #. The pitch is always exactly the same ("you have won travel points), they just name a different company that they are apparently calling on behalf of. They obviously just use the same list of numbers for each round of this scam because each time it happens, every phone in our office gets hit in succession. If you press 1 and ask to be added to their "do not call" list, they either hang up or give you a voice recording saying you have been added (but you haven't).
The only thing I have found that even remotely offers any hope of stopping them is reporting each new number/instance of this scam with Phone Busters (www.phonebusters.com) which is affiliated with the RCMP, the Ontario Police, and the Competition Bureau of Canada. You won't get replies from them, but please send them as much info about the call as you can each time you get it. Hopefully they can track these buggers down and squash them.

I just received the "Hello, because you are a valued TELUS customer you will receive 3,000 travel dollars. To accept press 1" call from 403-584-7878 (not 9898). Anytime I hear a robotic message on my phone, I hang up.

I got the same message form this number 403-584-9898. This makes me mad. I don't know what to do to stop it.

we received "the call" at 550 pm and 650 pm today, two completely different cell phones, numbers also totally different except that both begin with 403. We both missed the calls and wondered what the hell was going on - very grateful to you guys for allowing these posts to explain what is actually going on. I agree that the originators should be locked up.

Get lost and leave people alone!
Called my cell, no message, so googled the number and here we are. What goes around, comes around, for them, too.
Nicole 2010-06-26 00:43:21 Unknown
Hm. Very Interesting. The only reason I tried looking up the phone number is I just got a new phone and don't have many numbers programmed into it so I thought it may be someone I missed.
Mine was a missed call from 5:36 today, no voicemail, 403 area code.

The telephone number 403-584-9898 is now sending out the fake "telus dollars" scam. They ask you to press one and then you are in for more harassment and scamming by way of the telephone. I wish the bloody phone companies in Canada would be more proactive in blocking these numbers. They know about it, but they refuse to do a bloody thing to stop it.

what a bunch of jerks.
got the call just now from the 403 number, too.
googled it while I was waiting after pressing 1; my thoughts were perhaps I could be some super-sleuth and take down some evil scheme by not falling for their bait...
one day, my friends. one day.

Got the call. Hung up. Googled the message and following is the report. One difference... our calls came from a 403 area code.
"Telus is warning customers of a new scam in which the crooks call Telus phones claiming to be from the company and claiming to offer thousands of dollars in valuable, exciting travel bucks.
Telus spokesman Shawn Hall says the company has received a number of calls over the last 24 hours about the alleged reward from the phone company.
Apparently the phone rings from a 905 number and a recorded message says ?Hello because you?re a valued Telus customer you are going to receive 3000 travel dollars, to accept this press 1.?
Pressing 1 leads to a conversation with an individual that attempts to milk personal information out of the caller in exchange for the travel dollars. Telus says that this isn?t a new scam but that it is the first time that this particular bit of thievery is taking hold in Alberta and British Columbia. The 905 number originates in Ontario.
The scammers are apparently using an auto-dialler to make the calls."

Rec.d a call from this number, I missed the call, went to voicemail, but no message.
Some Guy 2010-06-25 21:14:58 Unknown
I have received this message 2 times in 3 weeks. My girlfriend received it once. I'm getting sick of this crap. I get at least one scam call a month. Why are the police doing nothing about this? These people need to be arrested. It wont matter if you are unlisted or not as believe they use an automatic dialer and go through every number.

@Calgary
Telus doesn't need to give out your cell phone number. It's real easy for a scammer to find out who a certain block of numbers originally belonged to, and just call them one by one.
skc 2010-06-25 20:19:54 Unknown
Missed the call (luckily), but I'm not a Telus customer either. Thanks to all who posted.
