Just got a call from a gal with a real heavy accent claiming they were working under "Government of Canada" and could lower my credit card interest rate.  She claimed to have all my personal information in front of her but couldn't give me my mailing address.  Then she asked for the expiry date of my Visa - when I told her I didn't have a Visa she said "oh..I mean MasterCard"...I told her if she had all my information she would have that, I wasn't giving it to her and was reporting her to MasterCard and hung up.  When I called MasterCard they said it was a pshishing scam that is quite common during the holiday season.

She was pretty quick to give me all her information - her phone number, company Credit Card Consumer Advocacy and her name, Maria.

We just got the call also at 10:00 am.  If this is a scam, man are they informed...  We have a Canadian Tire Mastercard and he gave me the first 8 digits...but then I asked him who the card belonged to, he gave me the name of the person who had my phone number before me for which I often get calls for the same name so that's why I hung up...  ooooff! He told me that he already had all our information in his computer, well I showed him...lol.  I hate giving out information on the phone but I did it once and it was true I got a lower interest rate on a new card from a different company.  Now that I think of it I could of been scammed back then.... ah well!  This time I must admit it didn't smell too good.

They have called here 4 times since Boxing Day. Twice the accent was so thick I couldn't understand what the call was about. Turned out they are scammers looking for personal data (credit card numbers, etc)claiming they can lower my interest rate. Doubt that as I rarely use the cards and always pay them off in full within a month if I do...but no matter, they can still help me save money if only I will give them my card number.  When I asked them to stop calling the fellow (who wouldn't id himself) got very hostile and yelled that I had called him!!! These are offensive scammers looking to pick your pockets.  Hang up on them, don't worry about hurting their feeling, and report them if they continue to call. Nothing good will come from talking to these thieves.

J'ai reçu un appel de ce numéro il y a quelques minutes. Personne n'a répondu quand j'ai décroché, mais il y avait du bruit ambiant comme dans les appels de télémarketing.

I don't believe the nerve of this guy! They seem to work on a Sunday, I just got a call from Paul Smith, at 6472881289 (the other no. they also use) who asked me if I had deposited the $100 yet! They obviously don't read this site.

RE: TELECON FROM MASTERCARD (22 Dec 2009)

1st call 12:54 PM   from:    call display #14036489228

2nd call 1:20   PM  from:    call display #16472881289

This is the information he gave me: His name, Paul Smith, his employee # 403  Ext 231. Numbers he gave me to contact him (403) 648-9228  or 1-888-562-4273

Customer program he represented : CCCA Program (concerning a substantial decrease in the interest rate, from the current 19% to anywhere from 1.5 to 6.5%, depending on how I qualified ) This was a reward for being such a good client that always paid on time.

I spent over 25 minutes on the phone during which I unwittingly gave far too much information on both my Mastercards, MBNA and Sears.

Despite the fact that I was up to date on my cards, he instructed me to pay $100 towards my Sears Mastercard “as soon as possible”, in order to “activate” the interest rate decrease on both cards”.

I later had second thoughts and called the above 1-888 number, and got a message “you cannot access this no. from your calling area”.

At this point, as I had given out so much information to this so called “representative”, I phoned both MBNA and Sears, reported the calls, at which point I was advised that the call was NOT from them, and that ONLY they have the authority to modify interest rates. Both cards were immediately rendered inoperable and new ones are to be issued in the next 10 working days.

Should your security people require any further information on this, please feel free to get back to me.

Call with a thick foreign accent.  I asked who was calling and they changed the subject. I persisted and she told me Credit Card Consumer Advocates 403-648-9228 or toll-free 1-888-216-5028.  They asked for the expiry date to my Mastercard and told me I can get a low rate on my credit cards.  No way were they gonna get the expiry date of my credit card, assuming I have any credit card that is.

I answered because I was expecting a call from a service technician. Caller had a thick Indian accent and asked for us by last name.  Our last name is often mispronounced, but this was so butchered I honestly didn't think he was asking for us.  Then he spelled the last name, and it sounded like ours, but either misspelled or he gave another common last name, and I figured anyone credible actually looking for us would at least be able to read off the spelling of our name correctly.

When I said they must have the wrong number, he proceeded to double check the phone number (which was right, but we've only had this number for 2 months and it's just a security land line so no one really has this number) but when he said, "Is this your postal code?" and read off a postal code from another province (compared to the phone number's area code) that actually sounded like my very first postal code from my first apartment (2 provinces and 12 years ago) I figured this call was either definitely not for us, or someone going off of a mix of cobbled together information from our credit history.  In either case, no one I needed to speak to.

When I said no that's not our postal code in a confused (not angry tone), he blurted out, "I'm sorry!" as in (Geez, don't yell at me!)  That made me think that he got a lot of negative responses from people he called, so I was more inclined to think he was a telemarketer or scammer than a legit business call.

He never did say where he was calling from (which I didn't think was weird, since he claimed to be calling for someone that wasn't us, so really he has no business saying where he's calling from to the wrong person as far as I'm concerned).

THEY CALLED AND SAID THAT IT WAS CRITICAL THAT I RETURN THE CALL(recording). I blocked the # called it back. It rang 8-9 times. He refused, refused and refused to tell me what CCA was short for and accused me of playing a cloak and dagger game. I hung up when he suggested I google the short form and found it to be a collection agency. I called the guy back without blocking the#. It was the same guy. He was looking for 'Fatima.' This was a month ago. The phone just showed the same a**holes after I told him to remove me from the list(all) lists. Phishing scam?

I got a call around 10am. I didn't even get the phone up to my ear to say hello and I was told to press 9 to speak with someone regarding my account. When someone finally answered I asked what bank/credit card company this is for they told me Visa/MasterCard. I then told them no one in my family has a credit card and would like for them to never call back, the man who took my call said something in a different language then hung up.

Ok, so I get a call from these jokers and heres how I deal with these low lifes. I cut them off from their sales pitch and inform them the phone call is beening recorded, I repeat the number they are calling from and get them to confirm. I then inform them that this was there first warning, should they call back 2 more times I will pass the info on to my lawyer and charge them with harassment. I get them to confirm that they understand me and then tell to never call back. I save a copy of the recording under the phone number on my hard drive in case I need to forward to my lawyer. This seems to stop most of them except for the really stupid ones.

1-403-648-9228 called me. They are a mastercard scam wanting to lower your interest rate. I clued in before giving any harmful information, and hung up on the guy. He also had a HEAVY accent - could barely understand him. After I hung up he called me back 2 times ---must be desperate to get my credit card information.

Hi, this is an obvious Nigerian Scam. They are renowned for fraud and scamming with fake certified checks, cerdit cards and even they can hack into bank accounts and transfer to overseas accounts. Ive been had once, and they tried manhy times after...If this number shows up on your telephone, answer it and notify them then you have softward to retrace calls to a fized adress, that should at least scare them off to anyther potential victim

1-403-648-9228 called (Arlene) to say that I had won a 14-day vacation for four.  She was hard to understand and was probably calling from a call centre as there were many phones ringing in the background.  She said something about Visa/Mastercard but I couldn't quite understand.  She invited me to call her back - said she was calling from Escape Travel.  Think I'll pass.

Got a call, not blocked, very heavy accent saying _ wow-  I won a trip for four..  all in ... because I was such a good visa customer, then went fishing for Visa #, and other information....and passport # ...  yikes , I hope nobody responds .....  that I could sell the package for about $10,000 cash !!!  Too good to be true ?  He said his name was Johnson, clearly working in a call center.  Said he had no supervisor which is likely the only true part.. in fact said he was the boss.
Gave him a few graphic suggestions and hung up. I called back and they identified themselves as " Escape travel ".  Followed up with Visa who had no interest in following up ,  but were very appreciative of the call.

I wonder where they escaped from ..?

Caller nearly impossible to understand, because of very heavy accent, trying to sell me on lower Visa card interest rates. He wouldn't tell me who gave him my personal information and claimed he was associated with all the major banks.  I told him I wasn't interested, that I don't have Visa cards, to which he started to ramble off personal information that only a bank would know.  When I told him I was not interested and wanted my number removed from his call list he started to argue with me.  Only when I asked to speak to him boss did he lighten up.  I was close to hanging up but decided to give him an ear full first. I called back and found out it is a company called CCA - a company who will offer you a Visa card at a lower rate that what you're paying.  They claim to not be associated with the banks but work for Visa and Mastercard, selling better cards at better rates.  I resent having my personal information being passed on by Visa and will complain to them.  I suggest that everyone who gets calls like these do the same.
