Debt Collector
Got a call from this number from a "Jeffrey Young."  The person was obviously of Indian descent, and left a vague message about needing to speak with my attorney within 24 hours or else something bad would happen.  i got a similar call yesterday from someone who claimed he was with the Cozen & O'Conner firm.  Fortunately, I know that law firm and told him he was full of it.

I just got a call just now. Claiming the same thing and saying I would be sorry if I ignored the call.  I got a call from a Illinois number stating the same thing and the person from that message sounded the same. Isnt there anything that can be done to stop the harrassing and threatening phone calls?

had a voice mail from this number saying the same things as stated above. called back and the guy spoke broken English and said that he would explain the reason i needed to obtain a lawyer but i had to listen without interrupting...so i listened and it sounded like legal crap but then i asked what company i owed money to he said well you should know that already, who do you owe money to? i told him i don't own anyone any money and he could send me paperwork showing me that i did and then we could talk,  he went on to say that i did and that if i didn't get a lawyer that i would be arrested. kept asking do you want to be arrested, ok well we will send the police. i called back and they told me to not call again...this is completely a scam. i think its funny though, most scammers try to be nice to get your info, not these guys! Point being- don't apply for a payday loan if you are low on money and certainly don't give any personal info over the phone!!

keep calling for my husband and then tell me when they are questioned that we need a lawyer.  Threatening with arrest at his job never received money from them and they wanted money up front. we never received any money because they wanted money up front to prove we could pay the loan back.  Felt hinky from the start don't appreciate being called and threatened.

I took a minute this morning and contacted the law office of Cozen and O'Conner.  They are aware that a scam outfit is smearing their name in attempt to scam people out of money.  The real law office of Cozen and O'Conner doesn't deal with debt collection.  The receptionist answering the telephone was very professional and apologized.  She even explained this scam was in the news in Atlanta.  Please do not let these people from this outfit scare you into giving them money.  And by all means do not associate the Good Name of a reputable law firm like Cozen and O'Conner with these scumbags.

This number called me tonight claiming there was a lawsuit out against me.  They claimed that they would have Non Bailable Warrent issued against me.  This is over some payday loan that I supposedly refuse to pay from 2006.  Total Scam, but this still gets under my skin.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

This number called me as well telling me I owed money, which I do not. Said they could not tell me specifics on who I owed to but that if I would take a settlement and pay them now they would not press charges. If I refused the settlement then police and attorneys would show up at my house within 30 mins to arrest me. It has been 30 mins and I am not in jail. lol
