Yesterday I got a call from this number by "John" who said he was Microsoft support. He said he called me because my computer was throwing off error messages. He wanted me to get on my computer so he could show me how it was infected.

Yeah, thanks for dumping an entire May 2006 essay straight from a promo site for a "debt fixer" with no attribution. Meantime, the person I'd replied to clearly said the collector "had the wrong number". If it's truly a dead end for a collector, a cease-comm letter is a perfectly safe and appropriate response.

If the calls *had* been reaching the correct alleged debtor, I too would not recommend the full cease-comm. But don't try to snow us with a non-strategy of resignation. This fearmongering author claims the only other option is to "tough out the collection process" and "talk to them ... until you work out a deal", as if every debt is valid and every collector is honest.

As I had already summarized before your "CTRL-V" advice, the FDCPA provides that we can raise a dispute which forces an agency to clam up until it validates, which could take anywhere from a few weeks to forever. The law also enables the alleged debtor to limit or ban all phone contact. Last year I succussfully took a typical Buffalo Bully to court for, among many other issues, ignoring my written orders regarding how to contact me.

Since 555 is the exchange, it is obviously a spoofed number, 555 is never assigned to a real number, however it is used on TV and movies to keep from inadvertently using a live number in a movie or TV show.  I tried to block it and my call block list would not even accept it because the 555 was invalid.  These are fraudsters if they are using spoof number tactics to disguise who they really are.

Just got a call from this number. The caller ID said DirAssist OK. When I answered an auto=robot asked for me and mispronounced my name, then a woman asked for me and I asked who she was....she hung up. I redailed the call from the caller ID. Again got another woman who mis pronounce my name, She told me she was collecting for Household Bank.
I explained that I hadn't had an account with household since 1999. She told me that this was from 2003. I told her that was still beyond the statute of limitations and also that I was on social security.
I was told that the AZ statute was beyond the 9 years and that SS was garnishable. She offered to settle for $1,400,  I hung up on her this time.

Definitely an Okalhoma City number - caller was real aggressive and evasive - making sure there was no reference to what it was about.  This call came across as a "scam" for collections on an extremely old debt.  These types of companies "buy" old lists for little to nothing and to try to collect on them. Most debt this old is written off after 5-7 years and is no longer even considered on credit reports after 7 years. Do not reply or answer!  They are as slimy as they sound.

The actual federal law reads that a skiptracing debt collector must "identify himself" and also name his employer on request. It says nothing of trying to first authenticate the call recipient.

Yes, the rep could not safely discuss the account until the alleged debtor was known to be speaking, but Kathleen should not have been denied learning the business name.

Learn how to exercise your FDCPA rights as an alleged debtor at FTC-dot-gov.

Got a voicemail from some dude, said it was really important and that he was from the office of the RS or VS, something like that:  I called the number back, and got Sprint's 411 service.  Called Sprint to let them know someone is using their 411 directory service to scam people of personal information.  They submitted it to their fraud department.  Good luck to the poor sod who will eventually get caught up.

No one should have a 555 number.  If you dial a 555 number with any area code, you get information.  In movies or TV shows, if they show a phone number, it's always a 555 number, so no one gets crank calls.  Somehow they've gotten the number to show up when they call.  It could be the IRS - laws don't apply to them.  They once called me and the number showed up as Sprint Customer Service.
