Registered to Quest and is landline.  When you call, there is a recording says that no incoming calls can be received on this number (common with some companies - but company is named in caller ID)

Now that you can transport your phone number from town to town within the area code, this person (people? Apparently travels from town to town.

As in a fake call room where they pretend to be a tax-deductible charity - often for Law Officers with a fake organization name.  In such callrooms, very often a motel room is rented and disposable cell phones are used - but this is an individual land line.  One person, one call.  Yes, a scam (defraud) call, but he obviously uses a purchased call list - people who have been known as or presumed to be "an easy touch" for scam artists.

I have voice mail and received "missed calls" (ie, no message left) at 3:28, 4:26, 4:28, 4:34 pm.  This tells me that he/she was working a small packet of cards (or could be a small "packet" on computer to this particular phone.  Person calling may or may not be the same.  This would be the reason for no messages as different persons may call from time to time and if messages were left, you would not match or recognize the voice.

Wonder if when the landline is transported to a cell phone company, if it continues to be displayed as a landline number.  Lots of questions.

Only Quest can stop such a bundle of these 555 often-transported numbers.  And probably only the state attorney general's consumer protection agency can investigate, file a court order for Quest to turn over the person or "company" who is listed as the person who first opened the phone account - and what other accounts that same ID set up.   When a phone line is set up, usually a Social Security number is required (plus name) to investigate to see if you have left unpaid phone bills around the country.

And a name and SS# should be enough you would think - but when I applied for a new phone when I changed states, my credit showed as bad based on a totally different name, but same SS#.  That is a MAJOR flaw in credit reporting companies.   Companies who do business of extending credit like this should demand a name and last known address, plus age and other prior addresses if possible.  As much ID as possible that the credit companies keep as a matter of course.

It is wonderful to have the internet where I can enter a phone number and discover immediately if it is a suspected or known trouble source.  Even a collection agency or bail bondsman or parole officer will leave a message of sorts and a return phone number.

Keep smart, people - and learn the signs of a scam and hang up the second it doesn't pass the smell test.   I just say, look, I've worked a call room (for what WAS a legitimate organization, but by the brother of a biggie with them who worked a holiday food basket)  - most all the money turned this once poor brother a broke loser with a mismatched color crash-repaired vehicle into, in little more than a year to driving a luxury car and wore custom made shirts and suits, and imported shoes.

And the actual callers?  ZERO salary, all "independent contractors" so no taxes or social security stuff involved --- and only paid a small commission on the amount of money they managed to weasel out of the mark.  Barely enough a successful one in cigarette, beer and maybe a bit of dope money - unless they had to pay rent, too.

The only food in the baskets (used grocery store produce boxes) are DONATED foods like turkeys, cranberry sauce, other canned produce, maybe potatoes.   No point in wasting the money on the few "poor familes" - so only as many "baskets" as there are turkeys.   And who gets these boxes?  Probably the list is kept secret.

So even if you KNOW the organization to be a real place, always ask for them to send you the request in WRITING and avoid like the plague anyone who wants to pick up your donation at your home or place of business.
