Today this person called my wife and told her the same story as I am reading in this page pertaining to an accident. When my wife refused to give any information, he began to insult her with vulgar language leaving my wife very upset.  I would like to know if there can be a way to trace from this telephone number were this person lives to inform the authorities.

Please READ LOCAL SCAM: So everyone is aware that lives in Kissimmee FL, thar has been scam calls from 407-579-6010 claiming your family member had an accident with said persons mother or friend and they are holding your family member hostage an they want 2000 dollars or so. They might ask you to pawn items or send them money a different way. It is a SCAM. They called my family at around 10 am claiming they had my dad hostage cause he got into a accident with the scammers mother, and they wanted 2500 dollars. They asked for a inventory of things in the house worth money. Mostly electronics and cars. They said that the callers brother has my dad tied up in the 3rd story building and hes mad as hell an wants to hurt my dad for revenge unless we give them money.

They will use a program called voice over or so the cops told me thats makes it seem like they can call from a specific number, in my case they used my dads number to make it seem like my dad called us but when you pick up nothing happens. They will have almost NO information at all on you or the supposed kidnapped person. They will try to FISH information out of YOU by casual conversation and then turn that information against you. They didnt even say it was my dad that was hostage they said the last person that left my house. They didnt even say what kind of car he was driving they made it seem like they knew but with out saying details about the car that it was so they fished out of my brother that it was a red convertible, they didnt even say it themselves till my brother mentioned it.

They take advantage of your panic and get information out of you, you HAVE to stay calm and try to contact your loved one to make sure they are safe. Again ITS A SCAM, they are EXTORTIONIST. Call the police right away while trying to keep them on the line. If your know your loved one is fine just call the police, do not give them any personal information.

One hell of a way to start my day.

Just got a call from this idiot.  He told me that my husband's relative was in a horrible accident.  When I pressed him for the name of the relative, he wouldn't tell me.  Finally, he said that he had my husband and if I didn't wire $2,000 immediately, he would kill him.  Funny ... my husband was sitting right next to me at the time!  These people are twisted and are preying on good-hearted folks.  Please let your family and friends know that it's a scam!  There's five minutes of my life I can't get back.

They are targeting not only Latinos but anyone who may have filled out an online application for a payday loan.

This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you may have filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.

ABC News released an investigative report on this scam in June. The FTC has indicted one of its ringleaders for criminal fraud:

Idiots called my brother claiming that I ran over a person this past weekend. Told my brother to hand over $2000 to avoid a possible lawsuit. Pretty sure they are targeting latinos. Filthy b@stards.

A person who spoke Spanish called me and asked if I understood Spanish.  When I said that I did not speak Spanish, he put his "cousin" on the phone who spoke broken English.  The purported cousin went on to ask if I had a brother or father.  I replied that I had a brother.  He then stated that my brother was in a car accident with his friend or cousin and that my brother refused to pay for the property damage.  He stated that he was holding my brother hostage in a room in his apartment.  If I did not agree to wire $600, then the person on the phone said that his friend or cousin was going to "put a bullet in his head."  I played along and said that we should meet so I could give him the money in person.  He was adament that I must send the money by wire transfer.

I'm most worried about the elderly who I suspect that these people are defrauding.

Person called to tell me that there's been an accident and the victims gave him my number. I asked him to ask the victim for his name, he said the victims can't talk. They wrote my number down. I then told him to ask the victim to write down his name. He said the victims are in critical condition, they're bleeding and they are at his house. I told him "who in case of emergency would call their family member first instead of calling 911"
