Debt Collector
Just called and asked for someone that I have never heard of. I hung up and called them back. The guy that answered was very rude. When I asked what the name of his firm was he said he was not a firm he was Trans World Systems (?). When I asked what business they engaged in he said they "make phone calls". I hung up - what a douche.

I do not answer calls from numbers I don't recognize. If they really want us, they can leave a message on our voice mail. No message? I block the caller permanently. Doing that right now.

Most likely a debt collector.  When they call back again demand who they are, their company, a physical street address and a valid phone number.  If they refuse, tell them they are in violation of Federal law (Fair Debt Collection Practices Act) and as a debt collector they are required to provide that information even if they have not yet verified that they have the correct person.  The only other piece of information they can legally state before they know that they have the correct person is that this call is in reference to a debt.  Every time they call keep demanding the above information and tell them you will answer no questions until that information is provided as required by law.  If they start making threats, tell them they are again violating the law and hang up.  Do not give them any information until they comply with your request to identify who they are and verify the accuracy of the information before proceeding.

Just got a call. They wanted me to verify my address but when I wouldn't and questioned who they were they said they would only tell me if I verified my address for security reasons. Well, that's an oxymoron! They are calling me, wanting information from me, but wont tell me who they are? Makes no sense.

To K.A. Tenah:  So glad that you didn't fall for the scam.  A lot of people do not realize what scam vultures debt collection agencies routinely do to target innocent people.  Same old con:  Debt collection agency threatening that "your account is going into collection...blah...blah...blah..." These people call or write and insist that you owe a bogus debt.

FYI:  For all readers who may see this:  Anytime you receive a letter throught the mail from a debt collection agency demanding payment, always check first to confirm whether this is actually your debt.  Once you determine that you don't owe the debt, make a copy of the letter from the debt collection demanding payment to attach to a "Mail Fraud" Complaint and file your Complaint with the USPS.  Mail fraud is very serious business plus it's under Federal jurisdiction.

Immediately mail a copy of the credit card company's letter sent to y ou demanding payment and attach a copy of your Mail Fraud Complaint letter that you filed with the USPS.    You won't ever hear from that debt collection agency again.

URL for the USPS Office of the Inspector General where you can file a mail fraud complaint: http://www.uspsoig.gov/contact.htm.

If you receive a phone call demanding payment from a scam debt collection agency, do not argue with them.  Take control of the situation immediately by asking the person to identify themselves by name. Ask them to spell their name to make sure that you have their name correctly listed (also a strategy to intimidate caller).  Demand that the caller tell you their exact job title.  Then ask for the mailing address---no P.O. Boxes---of the company  as well what the state in which their company was incorporated.  The caller will likely hang up on you before you ask more than two questions because they will realize that you're not stupid and you're on to their con.

However, if the caller gives you the above information, inform them that you will be immediately contacting the Attorney General in the state where they are located as well as the state that the company was incorporated to file a Complaint.

You probabably will never hear from this scam company again.

Please help protect innocent consumers by spreading awareness about this way too common debt collection agency scams.

Good luck!

Debt Collector
Had a call from 407-641-0708 persistently demanding that I provide him with a payment by credit card or EFT for a bill I owe Home Team Pest Defence. I insisted that I do not owe that company and the guy at this number wanted me to get my check information to prove to him that I do not owe the company in question. I got angry with him at some point and hanged up the phone on him.

I called HomeTeam Pest Defence and they verified that I do not owe them and seriously suspect that this is a scam because they have not turned my account to anybody for collection especially since I do not owe them.
