The number is from Elmwood Jail in Milpitas, CA. Some inmates were probably trying to call collect and got your number instead. Same thing happened to me just a while ago so I did some research. Unless you know someone in jail don't accept the charge. It's outrageous and a rip-off these collect calls.

The recording on my answering machine was repeating saying to say hello to accept charges, press one to decline phone call, press 4 for rates and press 9 to report as a harrassing phone call.  I just recieved an email a few weeks ago from a friend about 408 numbers making scam phone calls.

Debt Collector
I have been getting calls from this number for the last 2 weeks.  Some have come at 1AM.  They have all been a prerecorded message in Spanish.  It is coming from the Elmwood Correctional facility in Milpitas.  It is handled by "Correctional Billing Services".  If you wish to have you number removed from this, call Correctional Billing Services at 800 844-6591 and have your number removed from their system.

Yes. This is from Elmwood Jail. The jail phones ONLY ACCEPTS CALLS FROM LAND LINE PHONES (HOME PHONES). NOT CELL PHONES. THE JAIL CAN TRACE AND OR MONITOR CALLS FROM HOME/LAND LINE PHONES. NOT CELL PHONES. When the automated attendant says" say hello" It's voice automated. Sometimes it will have a delay when you respond via your voice. If you don't know someone that locked up at Elmwood and if you accept the charges some inmates will try and communicate via like a three way. I'VE DONE THIS BEFORE FOR MY NEPHEW WHO WAS AT ELMWOOD here's an example:

Say your boyfriend is locked up at Elmwood. But YOU only have a cell phone ONLY. No home phone. I am your friend and I have a home phone. So the way to go around this is...

So you boyfriend will call me on my home phone (for you) and I then will accept the collect call and we talk and say hello. While he's on the line I will then call you via 3-way on your cell phone. Once I got you on the line I will then click back over and ALL 3 OF US ARE ON THE LINE. So now I will just put my phone down (not hanging-up, like I has to go to the bathroom or something, excusing my self) and now both you and your boyfriend can now talk to one another. Then when there finished talking, they both will just hang-up. When I come back to check and no one is talking. Then I will hang-up as well.

BY DOING THIS, YOU ARE STILL RESPONSIBLE FOR THAT COLLECT CALL AND CHARGES. SO BY DOING THIS, IT BETTER BE A DAM GOOD FRIEND OR RELATIVE THAT YOU KNOW AND 100% POSITIVE THAT THEY WILL PAY YOU BACK FOR THE CHARGES MADE TO YOUR HOME PHONE.

HOPE THIS WAS NOT TO CONFUSING!  =)

Someone keeps calling with same messages as Cristina - 5 Oct 2007.
They need to stop.  I'll be damned if it's a scam from a jail.

Well just to verify i have verizon, and to an earlier post, -the woman who recieved ten calls to her job, cell, and home phone, how could anyone get all three numbers to reach you at unless they know you personally. Especiallly if your number is on the do not disturb list. If the innate calls your cell phone you have to set up a pre paid account, as i did. And to make things clear, the prompt says- say hello after pressing zero. One to decline charges, and so on and so fourth. I know this to not be a scam, but why am i trying to convince you all, lol. Im giving my girl support while in jail, but i guess i was just trying to be helpful.

It actually is a person, but its from the santa clara dept. Of corrections. You actually have to push zero, then say hello. I know this because my girl calls me from that place. Its all legit, just a friend or loved one trying to get a hold of you.

Today I was barraged by this scam. Between Noon and 5pm, this number called my work number, my cellular number and my home number TEN times, EACH. Grrrrrr I pay for the minutes for both my work and cellular telephone numbers. Both my home and cellular telephone numbers are on the Do Not Call list. This is most definitely a scammer who's abusing AT&T's billing system. They've found a way to extort money from people through AT&T, and they're working it.

I know no one at Elmwood, by the way. And *if* someone actually *wanted* to reach me, they would say their name when prompted. It's a scam, plain, pure and simple. Just hang up, again and again if necessary. AND report it to AT&T.

I checked the number and that is correct -- it is from Elmwood .. I was billed $8 for a supposed accepted call.  I had the same experience - someone at my house accepted the call to see who it was and when no one was there answering, they hung up.  But I was still charged $8. I called the number on my bill fror the billing service and was told I could block all calls.  But they will not discharge me from the $8.  I am not sure who to dispute this with.  Why should anyone have to pay for this when they don't even know anyone incarcerated.

Same Thing, except I let it go to voice mail and it leaves a message.  It says it is from the Santa Clara Count Office of Corrections.  I don't buy it.

I answered once but didn't say anything, and it started the message and said "say hello" to accept the charges and then gave the other options.

This is no doubt some sort of scam, possibly being relayed via the Caribbean or somewhere similar.  I just reported to SBC and AT&T as fraud.
