THIS IS AN EXTORTION SCAM. There is no such thing as "American Law Department." Scammers pretend to be law enforcement (police, sheriff, Feds, AG's Office, fake cop agencies with made-up names) and may be using bought/hacked/phished loan application data to extort money or personal info for fictitious crimes.

I received a call at my place of emplyoment (attorney's office) today.  I informed them that I knew it was a scam and I had already reported the name of their fake company to the FBI and FTC.  He immediately hung up.  I recommend that anyone who receives a call from this number subsequently calls the FBI and fills out a complaint on the FTC's website.

I received the same call telling me there is a lawsuit against me and had the last 4 of SS#.  This guy said his name was Steve and Adam and he is Indian.  i called him on his scam and told him I could hear other people in the background using the same read crap he used on me.  I told him I would report him to the authorities and he said there isn't anything they can do to him.  I asked him numerous times to stop harrassing me on my job and my personal cell.  He said now he will continue to harrass me because nothing can be done.  i tried calling him back on the number he left and it went straight to voicemail.

I keep getting calls, the same as above from a fake payday loan.  They make threats against me.  I think something needs to be done to put a stop to these foreign people (which they are either from India, Pakistan, etc) from making such calls.  Tell them to get a real job and quit harassing innocent people.  I am a senior citizen and am outraged that they can get away with such.  Some innocents get sucked into this and end up paying money they do not have.  I had such a friend, another elderly woman, who was taken advantage of.  Quit harrassing the innocent!!!  They did not give name of company just Steve from an attorneys office.

Have gotten numerous calls from these people.  Guys accent is so thick its recognizable each and every time he calls, and yet, his name is always different.  This weeks name is Theo Clark.  I believe another post had it as Steve Clark.  Number goes right to voice mail during off hours, so it's a direct line.

Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans

Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010  FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691

The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.

According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.

The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim?s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims? relatives, friends, and employers.

Some fraudsters have instructed victims to fax a statement agreeing to pay a certain amount, on a specific date, via a pre-paid Visa card. The statement further declares the victim will never dispute the debt.

If you receive these calls, do not follow the caller?s instructions. Rather, you should:

?Notify your banking institutions.
?Contact the three major credit bureaus and request an alert be put on your file.
?Contact your local law enforcement agencies if you feel you are in immediate danger.
?File a complaint at www.IC3.gov.
Tips to avoid becoming a victim of this scam:

?Never give your Social Security number?or personal information of any kind?over the telephone or online unless you initiate the contact.
?Be suspicious of any e-mail with urgent requests for personal financial information. The e-mail may include upsetting or exciting but false statements to get you to react immediately.
?Avoid filling out forms in e-mail messages that request personal information.
?Ensure that your browser is up-to-date and security patches have been applied.
?Check your bank, credit, and debit card statements regularly to make sure that there are no unauthorized transactions. If anything looks suspicious, contact your bank and all card issuers.
?When you contact companies, use numbers provided on the back of cards or statements

I too just rec'd a very unwelcomed vm at my work (govt agency) I might add.  who indicated that I was under some federal investigation regarding my misspronounced name and my Social Security #.  He had an eastern accent (Indian I believe) and name was Don (Don) Smith.  Yeah right.  Call immediately and good luck to me, my credit and my name.  My employer is the DOE and after I told the HR Company Rep they are going to call the # and tell them to cease and desist immediately.

I received a call from this number from a man named Steve at first who said he was a paralegal and that I have a lawsuit pending against my social security number for a payday loan. He then transferred me to an Aaron Estrada who then said he was an attorney with American Law Department, he was very rude and very threatening, claiming that if I did not pay the money back I would go to jail. When I asked for proof of the debt he said that it was a paperless loan so there is no documentation. I told him to "F" off and hung up.
