They are trying to collect on a sears debt for 225.00 back from 1997. really now.  Really!  I paid my lawyer for a retainer order to refer all the calls to their office. I owed $150 they called for $450 in interest and fees. I called discover paid 85 on the two year CC debt, and blocked two more numbers. They just keep changing it and calling from 6am to 11pm.

There tricky devils.
Wish I owned a debt collection company.

Yup, they called 9 (nine) times last October (2012). As of the end of October 2013, they had called this house 22 times. Quite an escalation.

Are they getting desperate, or do they program their robo caller randomly? Who knows?

Yes,  a new past-time, shall be Portfoolio trivia. How many times did the bottom-feeding pond scum make your phone ring this month? Is that more or fewer than the number of pest calls they made this month last year? Sigh.

Prank Call
Today's call from Portfoolio is the #420th since their lawyer, Pearson, declared in writing that they had "decided to cease collection efforts"  -- that was three years ago -- on this totally unverified debt.   Interestingly enough, it is call #16 so far in October from these vermin. Last October, they  called only 9 times in the whole month. We have another week to go in this current month of October. Hoooeee! Maybe they can triple last October's "collection efforts"  -- the ones these bottom-feeding idiots "decided to cease" three years ago....

Ignore them. Do not pick up, do not answer, do not speak, give NO information.

If you are totally bored, with time on your hands, put "Resolution Trust debt buying" into your search engine and read a wikipedia article about how the US. government actually created this perfectly legal extortion scamming industry.

You can look up the laws for fair debt collection, and also for fair credit statute of limitations at http://www.fair-debt-collection.com/sol-by-state.html  That has a link you can click to get an attorney to represent you (your daughter) where you can sue them and have them pay you up to $1,000 for their shoddy business practices. No, I am not a sales rep, but yes, I have sued Portfolio Recovery before and won against them. They are no longer allowed to call me about a debt they say I accrued over 20 years ago. I think that card should be old enough to vote by now and they can probably squeeze their money out of the plastic.

Best of luck! If nothing else, report them to your own State Attorney General's office. Many states have laws governing the type of behavior these people display, especially with harassing a minor's cell phone. Wouldn't you like to turn the tables on these people and make them pay?

I am constantly getting these idiotic debt collectors calling for someone else.  They have to be calling anyone with live telephone service.  I got seven of these calls before eleven a.m..  I have reported this number to the FTC along with fifteen other collectors using hundreds of different spoofed numbers on the Caller ID.  It is past time a law with teeth was implemented that stopped these harassing calls.  It is beyond the point of ridiculous.  Ever wonder if Congressmen get these calls?  No way, guaranteed "no call" numbers.  When the next Congressional election comes along, write in Debt Collectors as your vote.

I got a new cell phone number about a year ago and have these folks calling, and calling and calling. They don't leave msgs and I never answer.

HOWEVER, I do a lot of business online selling stuff, so I get a TON of spammers. Whenever I get those Nigerian (or whereever) spammers wanting my bank account info, I always urge them to call me ASAP so I can give them all my personal info.

Guess what phone number I give them?
:)

Just call me for more info 410-575-1863.

this number called my husbands parents.....trying to find out information about how to reach him.  His mother refused to give them any information and the person got snotty with her and she informed them to NEVER call her number again.  He has not lived with his parents for over 12 years.  So anything that they may be trying to collect on is WAY past the limitation. Putting your number on the "do not call list" has done nothing.  I still get calls from telemarketers and political and survey calls.  If I do not recognize the number or if it is unknown...I refuse to answer the phone.  What companies are doing now in the identification portion of the caller ID they are putting the phone number run all together, so if you have your phone set to refuse numbers that do not have a name it will still come thru.

You can always report them to the State Attorney General in Virginia. They have an online complaint form you can fill out.

http://www.ag.virginia.gov/Consumer%20Protection/Where_to_File.html

Stick to the facts - how many times have they called? Did you tell them to stop calling, if so on what date(s)? Did you send them a registered letter telling them to stop? Make it easy for the AG to come down on them like a ton of bricks.

You can also complain to the Federal Trade Commission:

That's probably the best solution -- don't bother to answer.

I think there is some confusion about what these PRA vermin do...they are not collectors of any debt you owe them, in the sense that they are not collecting on behalf of a legitimate creditor. What Portfoolio does is to buy up blocks of already written-off debt. None of the so-called "debt" they want you to send them money for is, or can be, verified. Most of it is very much beyond the statute of limitations.

In fact, their lawyer Pearson, when he was forced to respond to my letter asking for verification, not only wrote that the "debt" cannot be verified, but he admitted they bought the thing in 2001, and never even tried to go after the person named in the print-out until eight years later, in 2009. Since the so-called debt was incurred in 1997, and was already four years old when they "bought" it, and then they waited eight years !!! before starting the harassment aimed at "collecting" it, obviously they are not dealing with a debt that is within the statute of limitations.

Another difference between a legitimate debt collector and bottom feeders like Portfoolio is that you may have owed, say $1000 on a credit card, but they will claim the "debt" you owe them is $3000. A legitimate collection agency, say for a hospital, will try to collect the amount that was actually due on the bill.

So, people get confused and can be bullied into believing there is some moral issue involved in "making good" on your debts, when you are being hounded by Portfoolio and similar zombie-collectors. You owe them nothing, except what they can scare you into giving them. They bought a line in a print-out, that's their problem, not yours. Maybe a new day would dawn in the world when slime like Portfoolio are replaced by businesses that actually add value in goods or services to the economy. This is an extortion scam, though a legal one.
