Never pay a caller any money unless they MAIL you proof that (a) the debt is your husbands and (b) they are legally able to collect said debt in your state. If they refuse to mail proof of debt, then you can tell them that per the FDCPA, they are owed NOTHING.

I received a call from these people for a debt from 2007 that I never knew about until recently (from portfolio recovery) for $117 . (404) 719-4368. Atlanta area code. It was a debt for my husband and I told the woman I would need to talk to him about it and she asked for his number so she could talk to him. I told her no. Then she asked where he was working. I told her that he wasn't, so then she asked me where I was working. I told her I wasn't working. Then she says well what income do you have? I told her that was none of her business. Then she asks me if we could pay a one time payment of $87.00. Jeez!

It is not legal for them to be calling you at work. But they will stop at nothing. There are statutes of limitations on certain types of debt. Check those out you can go online I believe it is the Fair Credit reporting aCT. .... there ARE CERTAIN PLACES THEY CANNOT CALL YOU AND WORK IS ONE.
They also have been known to call friends and relatives which is also not legal.

Another scam from Portfolio Recovery Associates, even if I had debts - which I do not - why are they calling on a Sunday one call at 9:35am and another at 5:23pm.
Get a caller id block app and a Google voice # so you can have peace and quiet from these scammers.

I'm now up to 20 different Portfolio Recovery numbers that have called since my daughter racked up a whopping $500 on a Wal-Mart card that she never paid. Yes, that makes it her fault, but you gotta love their persistence!

M 2013-07-07 00:29:30 Debt Collector
Portfolio Recovery - they've been calling using different numbers. I don't have any debt and this is a new number for me so I don't even know if it's actually for me since I never, ever answer if I don't recognize a number.
This company is total scum. They purchase 20 year old credit card debt for pennies and try to harass people into paying up. DO NOT talk to them or for Pete's sake don't enter into any kind of agreement with them. If you want to settle a debt go back to the original debtor. If you agree to pay Protfolio it re-validates the debt since you now have a contract with them - and they will screw you with penalties and interest on a debt you don't legally owe anymore or may have paid off years ago. They LIE. I handle wage garnishments at work so know how these places operate. As an attorney once advised me "tell them to go pound sand".

Have not heard from these pathetic bottom-feeding pond scum for more than a week! And now, here they come, UNKNOWN in the caller ID, after the Attorney general's office told them to identify themselves when they call! MY, my, my...surely Portfoolio would not ignore such good legal advice? This was call # 359 since their lawyer Pearson wrote to me that they had "decided to cease collection efforts" on some unverified debt for a credit card from a bank that does not exist. Extortion scam, people, do not engage these vermin, ignore, do not pick up.

Well... they wanted to come take the motorcycles we purchased 10 years ago at our Beaverton address and will be here tomorrow. Fine with me since we never bought motorcycles and do not live in Beaverton. They rattled off some address and all I said was :the loan is the same address it was taken out in" so I feel for the home owner when they show up for motorcycles they most likely never purchased either

I have been receiving calls from this number as well. I was recently sued by a law firm in New York who claimed they were representing Citibank but I have every reason to believe this law firm bought a written-off debt because IRS policy forbids anyone from collecting debts that are written off because a "bad debt expense" can be deducted from income tax. I would love love to know the name of the law office you dealt with, it may be the same one I dealt with. Someone once told me that FTC stands for Federal Trade Commission AND F#$% The Consumer/citizen. I believe they are right.

They are not only using this number and the other numbers listed, but also they are also calling using State Names on Caller ID with no area code just a 3x4 digit number so you can't trace the number.
the call looks like this: KENTUCKY 333-6666
Patrick Mac 2013-07-05 15:28:07 Unknown
Refused to agree not to call back when told that the person didn't live here. She said "I don't have a list. We just talked to him last week at this number." Total lie. She was a rude jerk.

Sarah 2012-09-06 18:26:34 Unknown
CALL THE FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION AT 1-202-326-2222 OR ON THE WEB GO TO www.ftc.gov THEN THEY WILL STOP. BE SURE TO HAVE THE TEL # THEY CALLED YOU FROM AND THE NAME OF THE PERSON THAT CALLED YOU, DOCUMENT EVERY WORD THEY SAID TO YOU. THE FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION DOES NOT TOLERATE THIS ABUSE, EVEN IF YOU OWE PORTFOLIO MONEY.

Portfolio Recovery keeps calling my Mother on a weekly basis. They claim that she owes over $1000 through a power company that she NEVER received service from. They said they knew her social security number and rattled off some numbers which weren't even close to being correct. She informed them of this and didn't disclose any of her personal information to them but did hang up after telling them not to call back. They used the number 412-282-1421.
