They've called me twice on a Sunday but no one says anything- not even a recording so annoying.

they called a couple of times. I am behind on WAMU payments and they call every day from different numbers. Even when I send them money they call wanting more. I sent $100, they called and said minimum payment is $114, and don't I have $14 more. Uh, no. that's why I only sent in $100.

This is a WAMU number. I receive as many as 8 calls a day. I have had some financial hardships over the last year. These card services companies use these "gustapo tactics" to force payment out of you. You send them "x" amount of dollars for payment, but in response you might hear "this does not satisfy the obligation". WANNA BET! By law, if all you can send is $10 they must accept it. If they reject it, a good lawyer or a consumer law official can void the debt on the grounds of "refusal of payment". My advice is if you don't recognize the number and there is no caller ID do not answer it. These companies cannot come after you for not paying in full the obligation. Who do they think they are the IRS! The worst they can do is bruise your credit. Don't let them bully you. If you get hassled contact a Consumer Law Representative or your state's Attorney Generals Office.

Received a call today from WAMU and they left a message to call them at 866-397-4904 or go to the web at www.MAUMcanhelp.com.

wa mu calls my home number, then my cell. they never leave a message. sometimes it is the 1-866 number, or the 1-800 number. they call every 2 hours 7 days a week. okay, so I'm behind or late with my payment. I feel bad about that. Me and 1000's of other people right now.

Following up
I went on WAMU's Web site and requested they stop calling my cell phone. Within 12 hours, I had the following response:
Thank you for your recent e-mail regarding your account.
You requested that we no longer contact you by telephone regarding your account's status. Per your request, we have placed your account on by-mail-only status. Please allow up to five days for your information to be removed from our calling lists. This means that we will not contact you by telephone concerning your account's status, but we may continue to call with promotional offers. If this was not your intention and you would like to remove this status from your account, please send us correspondence with your request via e-mail or to the correspondence address listed on your monthly billing statement....
Frankly, I'm impressed. Really, most things aren't that easy!

Called my cell phone four times today (Mothers Day!) and no one was on the other end when I answered. I expect this is an autodialer that dials multiple numbers, then drops the rest when one is answered. That's why you get a busy signal if you try to call it back.
By the way, regarding the laws governing debt collectors, I found this to be helpful in understanding how collectors get away with their sometimes-shady antics.

Nice to know that they are special and don't have to follow the rules especially when they have been given all of the information up front and were told to stop calling......plus they record the call and don't say that they are - they claim it is in your credit agreement - unethical!

Confirmed that it is indeed Washington Mutual collections

I believe this is WAMU's collection agency trying to find info out on someone. Why don't they have to follow the collection agency rules like everyone else by stating clearly who they are on the Caller ID system? What happened to following the US laws on collecting?
