WASHINGTON ? The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver?s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

?This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,? says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. ?If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don?t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn?t the IRS calling.? Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim?s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it?s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver?s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here?s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue ? if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don?t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you?ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you?ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their ?FTC Complaint Assistant? at FTC.gov.  Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.

More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.

I have been getting calls from the same guy for over 2 weeks.  I even called the IRS to verify if there was in deed a problem.  They told me that my income tax was fine.  They took a report over the phone and I had to fill out forms online.  YOU ALL NEED TO REPORT THIS!!!  It's the only way to stop these scammers!!!!

Caller said his name was John Davis from tax litigation department and with the IRS and had a very bad Indian accent stating that there was a default on my income tax.  This is a scam as the IRS only sends out letters.

Received this same call.  Indian male with a heavy accent told me to call back and speak to an Alec Jones and gave me a reference number.  I knew this didn't seem right but they keep calling.  I called back the number and spoke to an Indian woman with a thick heavy accent.  She told me that they notified me by certified mail numerous times and that I was going to be arrested for tax fraud.  I am an intelligent person and tried to squeeze info out of her.  She read off an alleged affidavit which didn't specify anything.  I asked her to provide me with other info on me to see if she had the right person.  She gave me my name and full mailing address but nothing else.  She told me the errors were for 4 consecutive years and said that I didn't report my income correctly.  I told her it was impossible and that I file jointly with my wife.  I asked her why aren't you going after my wife as well and she said the problem is only with my taxes.  This confirmed that this is a scam.  If I am filing a joint return and there were issues, both my wife and I would be accountable I something wasn't reported or falsely reported.  I told the woman that this is impossible and that is not how the IRS operates.  She then said they will mail everything to me and hung up the phone.  Whatever you do, do not give out your social security number to these people when they call.

24 February 2014

I had a similar experience. My call was from 415-251-3769. A woman with a semi-French accent
claimed to be with the IRS litigation department and left threats and a reference number. Their voice mail (Indian guy) was full. Eric, an American, asked for the reference number and disappeared.

IRS said to call the Treasury Dept.'s IRS hotline. Not much help.

10 minutes ago from a Steve Butler from IRS. Claiming an irregularity from my income tax return. Asked for my tax attorney's name and phone number. I told him IRS do not call, IRS only send notification letter and I will wait till I get notified. He finally hung up. Called from 415-251-4974, heavy Indian accent.

I believe the guy named Ben Williams was asking for details saying he is from IRS. When I said IRS never calls over the phone, he threatened that I will know on Monday when the Sheriff comes to my door. Seems like a scam during the tax season by creating fear and forcing folks to give up the information.

The vast majority of the "IRS scam" numbers are Magic Jack numbers.  This one is no different.  The *real* Internal Revenue Service does NOT use Magic Jack numbers.

A caller from this number left a message on my machine today claiming to be with the IRS and that there was a deficiency in my income tax. He had a very strong Indian accent and he gave me a reference number to use when I call back. 2 months ago a similar call came in which I picked up. The caller also claimed to be with some federal money investigation office and that they would arrest me because of some tax problems unless I would settle the problem with him over the phone. When I told him that I did nothing wrong and that I don't mind going to court, he got pissed off and was very threatening. Don't give your information to anyone.
