Funny how there are so many fake IRS agents making threatening calls to the US from magicJacks overseas.
See my other post on 800notes about this topic:

I got a call from this guy yesterday stating that I was deficient on my taxes. Very heavy accent. This is definitely a scam.
| Chandler, AZ 2014-02-26 00:44:32 Unknown |
I got same message from Daniel Martin.
Very strong accent.
He said I owned money but I'm house wife, no job and my husband paid tax.
It's scam.

I also got 2 calls so far today in 1 hr. You can hardly understand the guy, very thick accent. I tried calling back and they hang up on me. Now I know it is a scam after reading all the comments.

Sorry, that number that was the Robotic accent voice was 415 251-5496, not the one I added there!
| Wise consumer 2014-02-24 18:05:52 Unknown |
Almost sounded Robotic, the accent was so heavy and the speech so practiced. Threatening that the police will be here shortly. I have no back taxes, in fact had just spoken with the IRS a couple of months ago and we are all good! I hung up on him. He called back and left a more threatening VM.

My husband received the call this weekend. I called them back today. He has a very heavy accent. He was threatening me saying in 30 seconds this call will automatically register for a warrant. If the payment is not paid in full they will pursue the legal actions. I asked him again where his calling from, he hanged up on me. I tried calling him back a couple times. He keeps hanging up on me. I reported to the IRS.

I received two messages from a computerized voice claiming that there is a discrepancy with my taxes and that I needed to call now under penalty of legal action. Obviously a scam I haven't done my taxes this year. 415-251-5496

I just received this same phone call a few hours ago. Its Saturday, Feb. 22. I tried calling back only to get a full voice box. Sounded sketchy - how many David Johnson's do I know who speak like a beat up asian boxer? I could barely understand the message. This scam just hit Arizona.

This man called and left 2 messages and proceeded to call 3 additional times. I knew it was a scam but he ended the call with anti American comments and also very dirty sexual comments. Calling the Police dept listed on Monday in Ca.

I got a call from a John Anderson, yes very heavy Asian accent. Could only make out it was from the IRS. I was able to get the call back number from my voicemail caller id. He claims they reviewed my taxes for the past 5 yrs and that I owe back taxes. I told him why didn't he send me a letter he said he did and that I would be getting documentation in 30 minutes then hung up. I tried to call back but it went to a voicemail box that said the mailbox was full.

Received a call from this bozo today here in Central, Ca claiming that he was from the IRS and not to disregard my call or I will face legal action and that this is time sensitive. He claims they have found a deficiency in not filing taxes....that's interesting.. all my years have been filed. I have since found out that this is a scam and talked to the sheriff dept and to an attorney and that this is not the IRS
I understand this is happening all over the country and they are asking for you to pay money through your debit card, visa card or wire money....
I have placed the recording on facebook for all to hear since the hard to understand guy left a voice mail message the first time before calling again this afternoon.

WASHINGTON ? The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.
Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver?s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.
?This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country. We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves. Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,? says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. ?If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don?t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn?t the IRS calling.? Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim?s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it?s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver?s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here?s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue ? if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don?t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you?ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you?ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their ?FTC Complaint Assistant? at FTC.gov. Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information. This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.
More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.
