This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.

I got the same thing. The stupid piece of crap foreigner on the phone said very inappropriate things to me when I told him to quit calling my number after the 50th call in one day. I hung up on him. He called right back and was swearing at me and telling me I was a w***e. I hung up on him and he called right back and my husband got on the phone and threatened him and he just kept going on and on. Wouldn't shut up. Someone needs to teach this guy a lesson. If he would have been a door to door salesman he wouldn't have left my place alive.

Received a voicemail from an India man claiming to be from the IRS, I could not even understand who the call was being direct to but I know it was not my name.  I have heard about several of these calls going around, so I checked the number out and found what I thought...it is a scam.  DO NOT GIVE THESE PEOPLE any information.

I first received a phone call from 202-506-9216 - a man with a thick mideast accent saying he was from the IRS.  When I hung up on him, he called again--very angry that I had hung up.  He then proceeded to tell me there was a problem with my "previous year" taxes and I needed to act immediately to prevent problems.  I responded that I didn't believe the IRS would be calling on a SATURDAY for immediate action without having first sent a letter and hung up again.  Five minutes later I received a call from 415-251-5897, which I did not answer.  From reading the previous comments, this number also claims to be from the IRS.  I don't know if the two numbers are connected, but it seems to be too much of a coincidence!

I also got many calls from the phone # 415-251-5897. I also gave them a piece of my mind and was not very polite. When I told them over and over not to call my number again and they still called back I finally told them I was contacting my lawyer and local TV station and low and behold have not received another call since.

Just got called by 415-251-5897. He claimed to be "James Anderson" from the IRS and they were going to seize my credit cards and bank accounts because I lied on my tax returns. The message they left on the machine was very low quality and difficult to understand. I called him and he read me some claim about back taxes. Don't fall for this scam!! Tell them to send you a letter.

I researched this number before calling them back. I was ready for their threats. When they told me I owed the IRS and if I didn't pay they would send someone out to arrest me. I told them to go ahead and send someone. I would call 800-829-1040 and confirm it and would also be reporting this call. Then he started offering me men. I told him I was reporting this call to our local authorities as well as the IRS and that the call was being recorded. He hung up on me. Lol.

Yes - these crooks are from India and it looks like they are operating from somewhere near or in Mumbai. I could figure out since I was able to manage them to speak the same local language  and accent. I got initial call from 415-251-5897 who wanted me to call his crook boss - 415-251-5897 Familiar crap to hoodwink people and threaten to part with money to save from IRS and police. Please DO NOT FALL FOR THESE CROOKS. It looks like they use Internet telephony and use public records to call people and harass them. Is there any way to track these calls to get to the physical location of call originators to put an end? In any case, I gave a mouthful to these mentally sick retards. Everyone should do the same so at least that will be a verbal punishment to these crooks.

Got a man with an Indian accent telling me he was from IRS on answering machine.  Most of the message could not be understood due to his heavy accent.  At the end of the message he appeared to be talking another language.  I tried calling back just to see who answered and the line was busy.  I figured the REAL IRS would have an automatic answering system.  That is when I found this site and it all made sense.

Debt Collector
Today I received a call from a man identifying himself from  the IRS Investigation Department, He told me that I was delinquent in  my Taxes and that I or my attorney should call him back, This was an issue that I should not ignore. I call back to the phone left  in his message (415-251-5897) the person who answer the phone connected with a lady called Michelle Brown.  She told me that I owed back taxes in the amount of $6,998.35 and that an arrest warrant have been filed with the court and local authorities for my immediate arrest and that all my licenses and passport  have been suspended. I  never received a notification - she said it was mailed to my previous address.  What year?, I asked, 2009,10,11 & 12 she answered.

I told her that this was the first  time that I heard about my debt with the IRS and that I wanted to pay it. She told me she was going to try to stop the court order and she put me on hold, we were disconnected. Called her again.  She was checking if I had previous arrests.. After about 5 minutes she came back on the phone and told me that I have 45 minutes to pay the debt and have the arrest warrant suspended. I said that I could pay  either by e-check or by Debit card. She told me that they do not accept checks, credit or debit cards because of the arrest warrant.   However, she mentioned to me that there were several places near my home, including Home Depot where I could buy a bill payment card. Her instructions were to buy ( in cash) from Home Depot a bill of payment card and I should bring about $7,000.00cash, (I would be charged like $75 expenses) In addition she told me to call her when I arrived at Home  Depot  parking place for further instructions. I told her it sounds like a scam. She said to call her when I got to the parking and hang up.l
We had called the lawyer, but they were not working being Good Friday.   I called my accountant and after hearing the story he told me this is a scam also my family had the same impression. I search the phone number in Google and found this web site. The first article, posted by  Maria, was almost a carbon copy of my situation. However, I never went to Home Depot. Please, be alert. I understand that the IRS does not operate in this fashion. Apparently this is the season for scams utilizing the IRS name.
What an experience!!!

Father gets a call from a FAKE IRS NUMBER of 415-251-5897 telling him that he has an outstanding balance of $5,489.49 over the course of a 5 year investigation on my father. I took the phone and began to attempt to diffuse the situation as the man stated that my father's bank accounts would freeze, license and passport would be seized and an arrest warrant would be filed to the local courts and have to serve one year in prison. Frantic and emotional I begged to resolve the issue and I was transferred to Officer Michelle Brown who told me we needed to pay half within the hour or the case would be delivered to the authorities. My father and I went as putting cash into the accounts and were ready to give her the necessary account information until I googled the number and called the IRS themselves (which happen to be closed of course) and noticed that this was a sick scam of innocent people's money and time. Officer Brown began to call us every minute leaving voicemails and then 911 started calling saying that have begun to issue the arrest warrant against my father. We went directly to the local police station and they called the number (knowing it was a scam) and harassed Officer Brown and she hung up knowing she had been caught. PLEASE do not fall for this crude and indecent trap of scammers taking citizens hard-earned money. Take action, report it to your local police department and stay safe.

Call from 415-251-5897 Male ask me if my name was....I answered yes.  He said he was from IRS and he was calling to arrest me for owing back taxes.  He then ask me hang up and call the number showing in my caller id.  I called the number Michelle Brown said she was a IRS detective and she had orders to come and arrest me and siege my property unless I pay $2,000 within two hrs. then she changed the amount to $1,000.  I question her asking how she got my information?  She indicated that I live in Hawthorne, Calif., (she mention a pox in which I did have a PO box in Hawthorne, Calif.) true but I live in Louisiana for the last 5 years.  Prior to me question her I made a mistake by giving my address in Louisiana.  She said she would transferred my call to her accountant and once the money was paid she would stop the arrest.  Next, I ask her, "to send me that information," she then hung up.

WASHINGTON ? The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver?s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

?This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,? says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. ?If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don?t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn?t the IRS calling.? Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim?s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it?s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver?s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here?s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue ? if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don?t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you?ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you?ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their ?FTC Complaint Assistant? at FTC.gov.  Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail tophishing@irs.gov.

More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.

They called claiming to be from the IRS and said that we would be arrested if we didn't pay 20% of owed back taxes and had an hour to do so. In a panic we tried to follow their requests, but thank God for the Walmart employee who refused to sell us what they asked for. They kept calling and calling. We then began getting phone calls from "911" claiming that they were going to begin arrest procedings and asking for our location. Scared out of our minds, we called the police, actual 911, and any IRS number we could find. Be careful, everyone.
