Received two calls 3/24/2014 at 9:04 a.m. and again at 10:19 a.m.  I was away so they left a detailed message which sounded like a Filipino male.  He did not enunciate clearly on my answering machine, but I did catch that it was dealing with income taxes for my son who no longer lives in our home.  We have been warned at work about these type scams so did not return their calls.  Caller ID said it was "Novato CA".

Got a call today saying I owed 6320.00 for not filing my taxes correctly and that they were investigating my taxes for 5 years. They didn't even have my correct address. They said that when they come to arrest me that they would have all paperwork with them. If I did not pay them I would be arrested and put in jail for 5 years for fraud. It was 415-251-6162. I think his name was Ben but I couldn't understand the last name. He also had a heavy Indian accent. When I did a reverse phone lookup it said it came from San Francisco, CA but originated somewhere overseas.

I also recieved a call from the same number, same story about tax dues asking for immediate payment. I am an Indian and can read into the ascent (Unfortunately these look like a bunch of Indian guys) and took me some time to conclude that this was fraud. Thaks for all the inputs you all had on this site since that helped me confirm and I have reported the issue to IRS as well. I will post this on social media as well and would request you all to spread the work to save innocent people from the trap.

I received a call from this number, but it disconnected before I could answer it.  I called back and got someone who mumbled his ID number then stated he was from the IRS and asked for my son.  When I informed him that my son had not been at my number for over 7 years, he hung up.  I called my son and gave him as much information as I had.  My son called and they told him he had to send in over $3100 in 24 hours or the sheriff would come to his home and arrest him.  He investigated and found out that it was a scam.  Then, I received a call from the same people the following day.  This time, they left a voice message.  The voice sounded mechanical and was very hard to understand.  Then I received another call the day after this.  I was not home and they left the same message as the day before.  These people are persistent and they don't talk to each other, else they would not have called me 3 times.

WASHINGTON ? The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver?s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

?This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,? says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. ?If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don?t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn?t the IRS calling.? Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim?s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it?s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver?s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here?s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue ? if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don?t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you?ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you?ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their ?FTC Complaint Assistant? at FTC.gov.  Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.

More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.

We got the same 'IRS will arrest you' phone call several times from either the female or the male with strong Indian or southern Asian accent. The stupid couple even left voice message and talked to me on phone when I left my recording on. Have reported it to IRS and turn the recording to the police department, hopefully it will help getting these sick losers arrested.

I recived a call yesterday from this mumber from a man with such a heavy middle eastern accent I could not understand him. He said he was with the IRS and he needed my Attorneys information. When I asked him what this was about he stated that I had an open investigation for tax fraud against me and he needed to put an attorneys name on file as I was in danger of being arrensted. He asked if I wanted the case number, I told him that he needed to call me back as I was on the freeway driving in the middle of no where and could not take down the information. He said he would cll me back, which he didnt. I was obvioulsy concerned so I called that number back this morning. I spoke with a female with the same accent but easier to understand. She asked for my contact info which I gave her (Do not do this) she said that I had a open investigation under my wifes name about tax fraud and I owed $6000 as I had not paid the proper amount of taxes. When asked what exactly this was about she proceeded to tell me that she would read the charges and sked me not to interupt her as she read this. She went on to tell me that a sherrif would be at my house on monday to arrest my wife and she needed a lawyer contact phone number, she also stated that she would loose her pass port and drivers license for 10 years, all assets would be confiscated payroll checks would be garnished, and she would be on some sort of federal government black list. I kept asking her what tis was about I asked for a supervisor, she mentioned aslo that they made 2 attempts to send infor via registered mail well of course that did not happen either. I was very angry as you can imagine that I could not get information or even a tax year this case was suppose to be about. I asked again for explination and she simply stated (she was Frustrated) your will just have to see on Monday and hung up on me. When I tried to call back, as my blood pressure was beyond elivated, I convienently could not get through. It was like my number had been blocked, eith a busy signal or one ring than a beep and a dail tone was all I got as I made several attempts. As you can imagine I was freaked out and spent over 4 hours trying to get to the bottom of this. Of course it takes and act of god to speak with someone from the IRS and to date still have not made contact. I did however get the proper protocol the Government uses to get in touch with people who have issues. They will obviously send it registered mail, if that fails they will send info via an IRS agent or a Secret Service agent to deiliver the paper work. They do not (again do not) contact you via the telephone or email. Do not respond to email from the IRS, do not even open it. Please be aware, as I have spent hours researching today this is a attempt at fraud, there are thousands of complaints registered about this phone number and many other numbers as well. Aslo the IRS will never ask you for your SS number, or other contact information as they already have it, or will mail you one of thier famous forms requesting any information they may need....it will all be done by mail.  Please Be aware, be careful and do not give personal information including SS numbers, Cell numbers, address or anything else claiming to be an IRS agent on the phone saking for this information.
