WASHINGTON ? The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver?s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

?This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,? says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. ?If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don?t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn?t the IRS calling.? Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim?s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it?s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver?s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here?s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue ? if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don?t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you?ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you?ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their ?FTC Complaint Assistant? at FTC.gov.  Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.

More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.

I got a call from an Andrew Paul, claiming that he needed the name of my attorney to handle an IRS Tax Dispute.  The number he used was 415-251-6327.  He gave me a case number and asked me to call the case office - Michael Carter (at the same number).  Guy had a heavy South Indian accent.  I am checking with IRS now, but was relieved to see the other posts referring to what seems to be the same scam. Thanks to everyone who posted.

My caller phone # was 415-662-8387 to contact Micheal Carter, which i did. An Indian voice girl named Jenny, answered my call and after I asked what they called me for, she asked me to listen and not interrupt her as she read out a long statement, about me not claiming ALL income on my tax returns. I would be arrested  tomorrow, and face all the examples stated above.
I asked her a question about what his was all about and what was this in regards to. She passed me onto another Indian voiced male who also threatened me and when I said I would be consulting a tax lawyer, he said i would be arrested tomorrow, and do not expect to gain bail. i will await tomorrow.

I got the call Wednesday and returned the call to day they said I would be arrested tomorrow.  I called the IRS advocacy line and he kind of laughed said it was a scam.  I called the number back to and said I just got off the phone from my agent and he said that they actually owed me 6000 and I wanted to see if they could take the 4984 out of the 6000 and send me the difference.  They got mad and said I would be arrested tomorrow.  I did not call on the same number and did not identify myself so I don't think they will send me the difference.

I was very worried when they called when I protested they told me to not speak until they were done.  I called the BBB also both IRS and BBB said it was a scam.

I received a call today from (415) 662-8528. It was an Indian guy with a strong accent. After I gave him a piece of my mind, he told me to call Michael Carter with a reference number. I called because I wanted to know what the heck is going on. I know it was a bunch of bs, but wanted to get more information to report them. I called and a girl with a accent asked me for my lawyers number. Oh, wow! They are crazy! I just hung up on them . What frustrates me is that they think people are that naive to give in to their scam. I need to know how they got my number. T=I can't believe they have the nerve to call and lie on the IRS.

These people called me last week.  Said same thing.  Michael Carter, investigated by the IRS, going to jail in 2 days if I don't settle the fine...Here is where they get really STUPID.  They tell me my local sheriff of the county I live in is going to arrest me...they aren't smart enough to realize that county jurisdiction and federal jurisdiction are apples and oranges.   Then they tell me I am being investigated...say nothing about my spouse, who is the first name listed on all my returns.  Guess we can file them under crooks are stupid, but not withing reporting them to the AG in my state and by recommendation of the AG, filing a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission.  And, you can only go to jail for tax EVASION, not owing money....they can seize your property but not send you to jail.  Found this out from my attorney.

The same people called me yesterday with this same script on I owed over $4,000. It scared the hell out of me to the point I thought I would have a heart attack I was shacking so badly. I've never been in trouble in my life & my husband of over 30years & I have always filed jointly I do not even work, I take care of his medical problems, a home health care provider for him. I feel so stupid now & in hindsight I should have asked better questions but I froze up like a child & I should have know better, but all I could think about was what is my poor husband going to do if they come and arrest me.

I also got calls from this number, so I returned it yesterday to see what was going on. The same person with an accent informed me that "I" owed $4,698. in taxes not paid over the last 10 years. I informed him that I do NOT work, I take care of my disabled husband & that we always file a joint return & that we live off from his SSD check. I kept asking him are you sure it's ME, I've never been in any trouble in my life & I'm in my 60's, he said yes! He also said that they would be coming today to arrest me & placing a lien on our property. I feel so stupid now to have gotten so upset, but the guy said listen hang-up & calm down & than call me back & I'll see what I can do to forestall this, so I did & went directly to the bathroom & thru-up! I was shaking so bad I thought I'd would have a heart attack. All I could think about is my poor husband & what would happen to him if they took me off to jail? when I called back he said that either I pay the money or there was nothing he could do to help me, I told him I didn't have that kind of money but could they take payments & he NO, I can not help you & hung up!

I got a call today from female with accent stating a warrant for my arrest will be prepared for tax fraud and sheriff is coming to arrest me tomorrow. I need to get an attorney as I will be going to court. She read an affidavit stating all my properties, cars previous refunds will Be confiscated. I was being charged for tax fraud, because of an incorrect tax calculation based on income. I said I only have one tax dispute with IRS for $1350 and they have my paperwork. I asked if she wanted me to fax it to her and she hung up. This call terrified me and scared my as the USA is a police state where people get locked up for everything. It seems to be an effective way to steal people's identity and get money from them and convince them to leave usa for a less stressful life elsewhere. It's such a shame constantly living in fear of IRS, police, courts, banks, bill collectors, and other countries now know that and prey on innocent people. God help us.

Received call from this number from man who identified himself as Robert Smith. Said I made errors on the last four years of my tax returns and thus  owed $19,000. If I did not come up with 4,800 and some change, the sheriff would arrest me by noon the next day. I withdrew all my money from my bank account, all I could get from my credit card and arranged to have my brother wire me money since this jerk said I would go to
jail for 6 months if I did not pay up. IRS is shut down so could not verify veracity. I was already on an installment agreement with the IRS and my student tuition tax deduction was in limbo so I found it outrageous but credible since with the IRS the right hand often does not know what the left is doing. Man had an Indian accent an was quite nasty. Also talked to a woman when I called back who made the same threats telling me there was a warrant out for my arrest.
The phone is coming up as a landline in CA so don't know why they can't nail them.  They also told me to go to a CVS or 711 to wire me the money, and call them when I got there so they could walk me through the process of wiring them the "IRS voucher". Will try to call the police in CA but not sure whom to call. Luckily, I checked the net before wiring the money or asking for some of the money from my dying relative to keep me out of alleged jail. They need to be stopped. I was a nervous wreck and could not sleep in my own home for fear of arrest and my life being destroyed.
