I got an email this morning from our SIP provider about this because that is a number into our asterisk PBX.    Turns out someone manage to guess the password to an old SIP account we had setup for testing a year ago and never deleted.  The IP of the SIP user was 217.199.185.49.  For now the account has been turned off and all the SIP passwords changed.  

Judging by the call logs, mostly the scam seemed to target Hawaii and New Mexico.  In just 3 hours, over 3100 calls from 2100 people, with over 500 calls lasting > 60 seconds and 60 calls over 3 minutes.  2 people figured out it was a scam and left their phone on all night, in what I guess was an attempt to charge minutes to the scammer, not realizing they were costing me money.  Oh well.

!!ALERT! 2nd Notification. HONOLULU CITY AND COUNTY EMPLOYEES FCU has suspended your account pending verifications. Contact us now at 14154499447.

Which is funny, since (a) no account there (b) I don't live in the state anymore and (c) 415 is not a Hawaii area code and not a single Hawaii bank or credit union has any branches/headquarters NOT in Hawaii.

WOW!!!  I just got that same text to my cell phone about 15 minutes ago also. Pretty scary what people try to do these days.
