| TP 2012-03-16 18:58:40 Prank Call |
Just got a call from this #. Dead air until, after a few seconds, recorded voice came on saying "goodbye". After a little digging found the name GT Group. Some further digging led me to a Bell website. www.gt.ca
I do not know why they are calling and I am also wondering if Bell even knows that these people are doing this? I am summing this up to prank calls.

I just got my first call from this number, but I'm sure it won't be the last, thank goodness I can block these annoying numbers on my phone, I don't know what the capacity is in my phone for blocking numbers, but if I start getting these on a regular basis, this one will be added. I didn't answer the call, and they didn't leave a message, so I have to assume it's a telemarketer. My "blocked number" directory in my phone is larger than my "personal contacts" listing. Pathetic, what we have to do for some peace and quiet.

When fines like this are imposed on organizations which so blatantly violate people's privacy, at least half of the money should be distributed to the victims of the organization's greed (which is what corporate profit is all about) the same way money is distributed to victims who are party to a class action law suit.

Bell Canada was fined C$1,300,000 by CRTC for violating Do Not Call List rules by way of what Bell Canada called "outside call centres".
Is GT Group Telecom one of those companies Bell Canada calls an "outside call centre" ?
| Dadtown Reles 2011-06-06 20:49:01 Unknown |
Just got a call from this number... I said 'Hello' a couple times, then there was a click and a robotic "Good-bye". Probably checking that my phone number is valid.

Read the information I posted at this site. The first of my postings here regarding GT Group Telecom provides some information which may be useful for you to provide to police.

Some call centres, although they can remove a phone number from a calling list immediately, intentionally use the time limit (the call centre has a certain amount of time within which to remove a phone number) to repeatedly call a person who requests his name be removed until the time limit expires and there are even some call centres who use the DNC List as part of their calling list (because the information is confirmed & they know any legislation which does exist in Canada is rarely enforced& the penalties are pocket change compared to the profits to be made by intentionally flouting the legislation intended to protect people from unwanted tlelmarketing calls.
Here are some suggestions for legislation to protect people from deceptive or unwanted marketing practices :
1) every outgoing call by any organization or business shall be accompanied by phone information (caller's name, not Unknown Name; and the real outgoing area code & phone number. Directly after providing the real name of the organization making the call & the name of the organization on behalf of whom the call is being made ("Hello, this is Robert from GT Group Telecom, Inc. calling on behalf of Bell Canada, Inc....", for example), the calling organization shall provide the area code & phone number for a real working phone number which is toll free for any call placed from where the recipient resides & which will be staffed with sufficient people to answer the call within 3 minutes, so that people targeted by the calling organization can call to have their name removed from the call list & added to the Do Not Call List if desired, at no charge to the caller making the request.
2) Each violation of any part of Rule # 1 shall result in a cash fine to be paid to the CRTC, with multiple violations to result in ever increasing penalties.
3) details of every call centre or telemarketing call (whatever you want to call these companies) shall be recorded (number called, date & time call initiated & ended, who terminated the call - company or prospect, result of call (appointment, sale, no response, request for number to be removed from list, etc.).
4) records of all calls to be made available to CRTC any time CRTC requests it.
5) Each attempted call to a phone number on the Do Not Call List shall result in a mandatory cash fine of a certain value. Each subsequent attempted call to the same number shall result in another cash fine, each subsequent fine to be greater in value than the prior one.
6) Multiple Do Not Call violations shall result in ever escalating fines as the total number of violations increase.
7) Each attempted call made by an organization (including business) shall be taxed at the following rates : 1 cent for the first call to a specific phone number, 2 cents for the next call to the same number, 3 cents for the next call, 4 cents for the next call, 5 cents for the next call, 7 cents for the next, 10 cents for the next, 15 cents for the next, and 5 cents more for each subsequent call, regardless of whether the outgoing call connects to the number or whether someone answers the phone.
8) All aforementioned fines shall be paid immediately by way of at the source direct billing to the offending organization via the organization's income tax bills.
Phone service customers are directly billed for bill payment late charges and working people have government deductions automatically taken from their pay before they even receive the money they work for, so why not apply the same principles to giant corporations?
The law of diminishing returns will quickly end repeated unwanted calls - if you were interested, you'd answer the call.
