I got the call also researched it at work and they actually are part of a scam that has infiltrated some sort of payday advance company.  Which I took one out for Xmas.  You need to contact the credit bureau and have them put the free identity theft on your account,  it's good for a year as well as call all of your credit card companies and your bank and get it all changed.  The FBI is also urging that you file a complaint with them as well as your local police department.  Hope this helps, good luck!

same as above - threatening, wishing me "luck".  I told the last caller like this that I had filed an FTC report and knew they were bogus.  Still threatened and of course nothing happened.  The last calls were from a different number.

I called the police dept, and soc.security (couldn't do much unfortunately) Told me to call the Federal Trade Commission and report it to ID theft dept. 877-438-4338. Also put fraud alert on SS # with credit reporting agencies. They had ALL of my info, SS#, bank routing # and last 4 of account there, work place. FTC wants to know about it. Seemed very interested to know about it and said they are checking it out, call with any other info known.

I have gotten sim ilar calls. These are indeed a scam. Beware of calls from a Williams Law Frim (Nick Stphans, Ron Adams or PrinceWilliam) that number was 646-274-1143. Another is "officer john matthews" from708-401-0535. These people may be part of the same group or different groups. The are all middle eastern iwth americanized names and they are very threatening. If you ever applied for a loan online they either stole or bought your infromation, thats how they know so much about you. They cannot arrest you, but they will htreaten to call you work and references if you do not pay. This is scare tactic, they are hoping you will pay and avoid this happening.  They may even make these calls (they did to me)  Yes it is emabarrasing, but I kenw and hade proof that there never was any such loan, alhtoiugh I had taken them out in the past, they have all been paid off.  I have been dealinbg with htese calls for 2 months.  It is always the same story, you owe a loan, but they are vague about the time and company, telling you they dont have that infromation or that they representmany comnpanies so they can't tell you exactly which one. I finaaly got the name pay day usa form "officer jon\hn"  but when I called payday usa I found out they only matched lenders and borrowewrs, they do not lend money.  Some loan companies have begun posting wanings to consumers also.  Report them to the FBI, your local police or sheriff, Homeland Security and your state attorney general.  Keeps posting the number on site like this and whocallsme.com, scamwarners.com, and fraud watch websites.  Theyt chanmge names and numbers alot, so keeps checking for new manes and numbers.  Good Luck!

Consumer Alert: Attorney General warns Kansans of debt collection scam

January 29, 2010 -- Attorney General Steve Six is cautioning Kansas consumers about telephone calls from apparent fake debt collectors who are impersonating law enforcement officers in an effort to extort money from consumers.   Consumers are warned to not submit payments to these fraudulent debt collectors.

When calling, the scammers most often state they are attempting to collect a debt related to an internet payday loan obtained by the consumer, but which the consumer never repaid.  Consumers state they have never obtained such a loan or paid off the loan years ago.  The scam artists have most recently identified themselves as ACS, National Affidavit Processing Department and United Financial Crime Division, but may use additional phony names.  It appears the phone numbers used by the scammers are ?spoofed? numbers, so that the number appearing on a consumer?s caller ID is not the actual number of where the call originated. It appears the calls in question may be originating from outside the United States.

When questioned, the individual calling refuses to disclose the full name or address of the collection agency they claim to represent.  These scammers have been able to provide consumers with identifying information, such as the consumer?s social security number, home address, e-mail address, names of family members and the consumer?s computer IP address.  Since the callers are able to provide valid personal information, consumers may become confused and believe they are being contacted in regard to a legitimate debt.

If the initial debt collection scam is unsuccessful, consumers have been re-contacted months later with the scammers posing as law enforcement officers or officers of the court.  Typically, the consumer is threatened with arrest for fraud or some other fictitious crime unless the consumer agrees to immediately wire money via Western Union.  The fictitious officers strive to frighten and confuse consumers into compliance by using legal sounding terms such as ?We?re filing an affidavit against you? or by stating a lawsuit has been or is in the process of being filed against the consumer.

A hallmark of each scam has been calling consumers repeatedly at their place of employment.  This scam hit home when an employee of the Kansas Attorney General?s Office was repeatedly called both on her cell phone and at work.  Despite the employee?s repeated verbal disputes, the caller refused to provide any identifying information to allow her to send a written dispute. The scammer also continued to call her numerous times a day regarding a payday loan she denied obtaining. Two months later, she was again contacted by telephone by an individual identifying himself as an ?officer?.

?I denied owing the debt and refused to pay without being provided validation of the debt. I was then told, ?If that?s the case, I will have local law enforcement come to your place of business and drag you out kicking and screaming?,? stated the employee.

?It is important for consumers to know their rights under the law,? Attorney General Six said. ?If a consumer is receiving calls from a debt collection company and believe it is a scam, I encourage them to contact our office immediately.?

Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), collectors are required to send consumers a written notice within five days of the initial contact.  The notification should contain  information such as the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor to whom the debt is owed and a statement informing the consumer they have thirty days to contact the debtor in writing to dispute the debt or request validation of the debt. In addition, legitimate debt collectors are prohibited by the FDCPA from making false or misleading representations, such as the consumer has committed a crime, implying nonpayment will result in the consumer?s arrest, or using the threat of violence.

More information is available on the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act at http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre27.pdf.

I too recieved the same phone call and threats, I was told that I had 16 counts of "fraud against me", I too got scared and inturn called the police department to file a formal complaint and to see what I should do for I knew that if there was any cases against me they would run my name in a national database and see if my name popped up anywhere and of course it didn't but at first I was unsure wondering if someone else had stolen my information etc( since the man on the phone also had ALL of my personal information) and did take out these pay day loans in my name and maybe there was some kind of charges against me, it was very convencing with the info, that he had on me. But the police officer did run my name and I was fine, but now I am having to change my bank accounts etc. I am also going to be contacting the Social Security office on Monday (for this just happened to me this weekend) and will be letting them know that someone has my social security number.... Just incase. I really hope that these people get caught, if this happens to you try to get anything in writting emails anything the police cant do any type of investigating unless they have some kind of proof. If you paid these people take that to the police they can then start an investigation.  If they used your SS# and there is anything on your credit report that shouldn't be, they can start an investigation with that, bank statements where they took money, give this stuff to the police make a complaint and lets get these a***oles! I too am a single mom and who goes around stealing from single parents who work their a***s off to put food on the table? I am sorry for whomever was not able to figure out that this was a scam and for those of you who did figure it out, start warning people and all of us lets work together to put an end to this. Good luck to all and God Bless.

Debt Collector
I recieved a call from someone named "Mark Wilson" from the number 424-294-5962. He left a message saying that either myself or my attorney should contact him immediately. He said that this matter was very time sensitive and he needed to hear from myself or my attorney and if he didn't then all he could do was wish me good luck as this situation unfolds on me. I called the number back and asked for "Mark Wilson" and was told he was busy. The man I spoke with never gave me his name. He only said he was callinf from the Federal Legislation of the Department of Justice. He had all of my information. My SS#, my phone#, my address, where I worked, even my mothers name. He said that I was being criminally charged for a payday loan debt that I had defaulted on with a company called Instacash. He said I owed $715.32. When I told him I didn't have that kind of money he said I should have my attorney contact them because I was going to be sued. I told him that I can represent myself if need be. He then aked if I had a law degree and I said no, but I don't need one in a civil case. He then proceeded to tell me I was going to be arrested. I began to cry as I did not and could not go to jail as I am a single parent and just started a new job which he threatened to have someone come to if I didn't comply. He got me completely distressed. So he asked me to hold on. He came back and said the restitution department agreed that if I pay $150 within the hour and agree to the rest at $150 each pay date they would put the case on hold. Well out of desperation because he was very convincing I agreed. He said I had 1 hour to go the bank and have a letter of authorization written exactly the way he said along with my debit card number and a copy of my drivers liscense. Well I did it because he serioulsy scared me. He told me to make the letter to the Attention of a man named Rox Murphy. After I faxed the authorization This "Rox Murphy" called me from the number 714-006-6000. I tried calling that number back and got a recording saying that was not a working number. Then I recieved a call from someone named "Mark Sanders" of Sanders Legal Group at the number 877-302-2505. He said he was calling to verify the payment and to let me know I would see Sanders Legal Group as the people the debit was made by. Well the next day I called "Rox Murphy" back and asked if he could please give me the address of the DOJ he said he was with and he said he did not have to give me that information. I also asked if I could get something in writing verifying this debt, and he said I would get something when it was paid in full. I then began to validity of the debt and the company and he got really upset saying that I insulted him by asking so many questions and not believing him. I told him that if I do owe the debt then I will be happy to pay, but I just would like some verification for my own records and for a sense of security. After he got really upset he hung up on me because I did'nt believe him. I wish I would have been more cautious from the beginning, but it wasn't until I got online and started researching that I realized it was a scam. There were so many people who got this call and the conversation was word for word. The only differences were names and business or collection agencies. I have closed my account, but I still don't feel safe as they have all of my personal information. I didn't have to give them any of it. I have the messages on my phone and also the letter they had me write and fax. I'm at a loss as to what else I can do.
