Called twice, once from this number and once from another 438 number. Both times hung up, no message. I too don't answer unless I know the number, especially with an unknown area code. I don't totally agree with my own advice, but at this point it feels like the only thing to do is look, don't answer, don't sweat it. The scammers are everywhere, and this includes the phone companies. It's a drag, but to get angry only makes it worse for our own emotional life.

Prank Call
I got a 2 calls from this person. After the minute he called, he called again, I didn't answer the 2 calls. He didn't leave a message. Probably a prank call or scammers or spam. I just hate these type of people. Whoever (438)-800-0463 is he is probably trying to scam me.

There were some telemarketing caller centers funded in Montreal since a couple years ago. They all followed the same pattern by renting some space of a floor in a business building without any sign ouside - some are not even listed on the name catagory board at the building entrance; however most of them are using the (1-8XX) business phone numbers, not the local number to make calls, unlike this one more openly now. The Quebec government approved their licences to expect increasing local employment rate and to solve the worsened economical problem; but I don't think the government awares about the serious abusive calling from these centers. You can file an impeachment report with all the fact to the local commerce affair department and cc to the law enforcement authorities each time upon seeing a case happening, so the government can have a stand ground for further investigation. Once the case is proven, the police will be able to follow up to take all the other numbers of their possession into coustedy.

My proven way to stop these calls......

Answer, speak immediately so the computer will transfer to a live person. Then have fun with it, tell them you are so interested, but keep saying you are doing things, like answering doorbell, getting pen and paper, getting credit card.

The more you can waste that live person's time (and wages) will get you off call lists faster than any "do not call" list. I do this, and they never call again, and I have rarely been getting new calls.

Hit them where it hurts, the wallet.

If a nice percentage of people did this, all telemarketing would probably stop...

And please feel free to pass all of this along whenever you post comments on other numbers...

They call with an automated msg saying that by awnsering short survey will gain me free tickets to a cruise. I played along and gave them touch tone responses to only 3 questions. Depending on your awnsers there seems to be a follow up question, where you are then asked if you want info on loan consolidation, or trip planning or immigration application. Then you say no and then the call abruptly ends, by saying thank you a booking agen will contact you with 24-48hrs to book the trip.

I doubt its legit and there is no private info requested, but im sure someone on the other end thinks im a big fish they can real in when they contact me again.

They said free tickets for a survey and im gonna hold em to it!

Didn't recognize the number so didn't answer; got part of a message about the usual fake 'short survey'.  All these calls are computer generate and run through a VoIP line; these aren't 'real' surveys - these are crooks, organized crime out to find 'live numbers' and then trying different types of calls to try to scam your personal data from you (name, confirm address, phone, credit card, fake tech support trying to access your computer, fake timeshare, fake 'win a prize', fake 'win a vacation/cruise', newest - pretending to be a Telco and asking you to confirm your account number (utility bills are used to 'prove' identity).  The crooks sell/share/rent lists, or have computers dial number after number usually from an off-shore call centre.  They use the data to create Fake IDs and commit more fraud in your name (including fake passports).  See the RCMP Top Scams website, and warn your elderlies that these are crooks and they should not answer or call back and its not rude to just hang up on them.  They don't know you; they aren't real companies; you are just a 'mark' to them.  Once they have a 'live' number you get more calls - just hang up (it confuses the machines).  Do NOT press buttons for an agent, or to be 'removed', or bother to call back - this just confirms your number is real.  Being rude to a live agent means you'll get more calls - just hang up.

Report any details to your local anti-fraud unit - in Canada you can email to info@antifraudcentre.com.  To do more, write your elected officials and get them to support the anti-fraud work and leverage our trade agreements with other countries where the crooks operate to help shut them down.

Telemarketer
Scam Alert. One of the "You have won a free...." calls that has automated responses so they can have a travel "consultant" call you back to fish for your info. Can be amusing to give the name and phone number of your ex, old boss etc. to these people, but otherwise ignore or block if you can. Most newer cell phones have options to block calls from the number without having to go through your local service provider.

Cheers,
Bon

Telemarketer
I got a call on my cell this morning and never answered. But for everyone who is getting these calls on their cell phones you can block them directly on your phone. If you have an iPhone go to the number in your call history and hit the info icon on the right hand side and then after the info and options window opens scroll down to the bottom and hit "block this caller". This isn't the first telemarketer I have block on my iPhone and sadly probably not the last...

After writing to them, here's the Email i received:

Dear Mr./Ms. Bill,

Kindly be informed that we have received your e-mail below and we are sorry that you are experiencing such an unpleasant situation.

Please confirm if the number (My Number) is the number you are receiving the harassing calls on, or the harassing number, as it does not pertain to Iristel inventory. We assure you that the number will not be used for any other purpose than solving this complaint.

Please be so kind and provide us with the number that is harassing you so that we can verify if the number indeed belongs to Iristel, as Iristel does not promote its own services via telemarketing.

Should the number belong to us we will investigate the situation and if possible block the calls to your number. Also, should you have any examples of when these calls occurred it would also be of aid in the investigation of the situation.

However, kindly be aware that we are limited in taking enforcement measures without an official complaint placed with the Law Enforcement Authorities. Thus we would strongly recommend that you place a formal complaint with your local Police Department or to the CRTC.

Also please be aware that it may also be a case of Caller ID spoofing, which means that someone might be using that specific number to hide their own identity, making both you and the owner of the reported number victims.

Kindly note that it would also be helpful if you list your number with the National Do Not Call List, in case you have not done so already.

Meanwhile, as a temporary solution, you can contact your service provider and ask him to activate a feature that will block all incoming calls from the number that is harassing you.

Thank you for your understanding and we hope the information provided above will be of help in your pursuit of this matter.

Should you require any further details, please do not hesitate to contact our Customer Service Team by e-mail at customercare@iristel.ca or by calling 1-866-779-IRIS (4747), one of our agents will gladly assist you further with your request.

Best Regards,
